To say please don't go to your second home

With talk of London going into lockdown tomorrow can I remind second home owners that Cornwall has one hospital. Devon has four hospitals. Where I live in Devon there is no food in any of the supermarkets. Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx.

I really hope they listen to sense.

ineedsun · 19/03/2020 07:05

Bumping because you're spot on

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/03/2020 07:06

YANBU

thebogrollqueen · 19/03/2020 07:07

As a Norfolk reisdent can I also say the same of here too? Please 2nd homers think about it, we don`t have the NHS infrastructure to cope with us now, plus you may inadvertantly bring the virus with you. The fleeing to 2nd homes is exactly how the virus spread in Italy......and look at it now! The coast is like a ghost town, nothings open anyway and all the supermarkets are empty.

Bluewavescrashing · 19/03/2020 07:08

Hear hear. I have hospital doctors in my family.

Teddypops · 19/03/2020 07:08

Agreed, I am in Cornwall and this scares me.

I can sympathise though but yes our hospital won't cope as it is.

AdriannaP · 19/03/2020 07:10

Can I add that some tiny villages and valleys in Italy have hundreds of cases (including nearly all GPs) as this happened? People from Milan moved/fled to their holiday homes when only that area was a red zone. Lots of elderly people in those villages have now died. Now all if Italy in lockdown.

IndecentFeminist · 19/03/2020 07:11

And the Isle of Wight...we have limited access to facilities and a massive elderly population.

brittanyfairies · 19/03/2020 07:12

I live in Brittany and the animosity that has been directed to the Parisiens who shot down here as soon as Macron announced the shut down is incredible. Stay home please.

Bumfuzzled · 19/03/2020 07:15

Yes yes yes! I’m in Cornwall and I can’t believe how many people are still turning up on holiday. Our one hospital can’t cope at the best of times, it goes into emergency measures every flu season! It’s really frightening and disheartening that people aren’t being sensible by staying put.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2020 07:16

Another Cornwall-dweller here adding my agreement. We don't have the infrastructure or access to health care in the best of circumstances. We have empty supermarkets, our GP surgeries are closed except for telephone appointments and we have a much higher percentage of older people living here. Please consider the big picture and stay away.

gower4 · 19/03/2020 07:20

Completely agree

Stuckforthefourthtime · 19/03/2020 07:20

Agree! In Norway the government had to ask people to return home from summer cabins for similar reasons, but the govt here has been notably quiet. With all the (possibly mad) gossip about a London crackdown coming there'll be tons of people hitting the road if they don't announce something soon.

Distantview · 19/03/2020 07:22

Here's a plea from an MP and doctor in North Wales:

Clymene · 19/03/2020 07:24

All seaside areas are the same: we typically are characterised by poor hospital facilities and high numbers of elderly residents.

Stay in London please.

PlugholePencil · 19/03/2020 07:26

Just this minute saw a Facebook post from someone who rents a property in the witterings advertising its availability with sentences encouraging people to get out of London before lockdown.
People dispersing to their second home locations the minute schools closed was one of the reasons Spain got hit so badly.
I would like to think lessons have been learnt, but given some of the things I’ve read on here about people taking toddlers swimming etc I’m doubtful.

Balkinfly · 19/03/2020 07:26

I agree but a lot of people are incredibly selfish and will convince themselves that it is ok.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 19/03/2020 07:27

YANBU. My mum is in Southern Spain and city dwellers have brought the virus from Madrid. She needs treatment for cancer.

stouffer · 19/03/2020 07:28

Don’t come to Cumbria here because the health system here is totally inadequate in normal times. Plus, it has an ageing population so when this really lands it will be swamped faster than most places.

IkeaSlave · 19/03/2020 07:29

If the government want it stopped they have plenty of options. Such as not telling people their plans in advance and asking people not to go. That's before we move to the 'telling people' stage.

istheresomethingwrongwithme · 19/03/2020 07:29

Also Cornwall - please stay away, the ONE hospital we have can't cope anyway.

theghostwriter · 19/03/2020 07:33

Been thinking this for a while. Judging by the behaviour of the panic buyers, appealing to people's better nature isn't going to help much! Expecting them in Norfolk any time now. A real double whammy for an area where local people can't afford homes and houses stand empty much of the year.

Piglet208 · 19/03/2020 07:34

Boris needs to make a statement about this today. He needs to categorically insist that people do not go to second homes or go on their UK holidays (with Easter approaching this is essential). The Internet is full of speculation about a full martial lockdown in London and there will be chaos in rural communities if people go to them.

LolaSmiles · 19/03/2020 07:36

Bumping for you because I totally agree.

Live in a city, just follow guidance there. Don't spread the risk to communities that already have fewer services due to lower all year residents, party due to the number of second homes and holiday let's.

MrsMozartMkII · 19/03/2020 07:36

My elderly step-Mum is in Cornwall. I know the hospital (and yes, there is ONE) and general infrastructure well. It really won't cope with an influx, it barely copes with normal day-to-day requirements.
