With talk of London going into lockdown tomorrow can I remind second home owners that Cornwall has one hospital. Devon has four hospitals. Where I live in Devon there is no food in any of the supermarkets. Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx.

I have no idea if you are covered with insurance, I’d say give them a call.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:33

No I’m not. No insurance will cover anyone not to travel at all in the current situation. Of course they won’t. Unless it is to Italy or Spain.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:33

Or the US or Canada

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:33

You still shouldn’t go.

Enough4me · 21/03/2020 19:36

All the Immuno-compromised and elderly that will die through selfish holiday makers, all the NHS staff with heads in their hands...what does it take to get through?

GinnyStrupac · 21/03/2020 19:38

Would it work on reverse

Absolutely. I don't know anyone in our rural location who is now travelling into towns or cities except without choice for work or hospital.

This is not our location, but similar sort of rural area - read up on Eyam during the plague.

GinnyStrupac · 21/03/2020 19:53

Can I also direct second home/holiday home/annexe owners to the Open Homes scheme on Airbnb if you are wanting to be community-spirited.

For info.

'People travel, deal with it'. Christ, what an odious human being you are @Toomuchtrouble4me. People like you are why we hate 2nd home owners. We are a community. Your concern for this community is zero because you don't consider yourself part of it. We're just window dressing.

Do you know why we don't want you here (well we don't want you at the best of times but right now, this is the pressing issue) - this is the current infection rate in London.

Unless you stay in 'Sea View' and don't leave it the whole time, please keep your infection in Kensington. We don't have the capacity to look after you.

To say please don't go to your second home
Sooverthemill · 21/03/2020 21:12

I feel for people who may lose money on holiday bookings but this an exceptional circumstance where we have to follow guidance even if we lose money eg close businesses because of the social distancing. Many people will lose money. Children will miss school. Couples can't get married. People won't be able to go to funerals or hold the hand of their mum as they die. Missing a holiday pales by comparison

UYScuti · 21/03/2020 21:12

City dwellers with bolt holes in the country appear to have been a significant vector in this pandemic

MMN123 · 21/03/2020 21:16

@ UYScuti
Really? Is there data on that?

I would have thought all the country folk coming to London shopping and going to the theatre or sending their children to study here and having them pop home at the weekend might have had an impact. Or all the people who live and work in the country but come to London for work meetings and conferences. Maybe they all carried it to the country as much as the (far fewer) second homers. What do you think?

MMN123 · 21/03/2020 21:18

Or the country folk skiing in Italy?!!

TellerTuesday4EVA · 21/03/2020 21:19

YANBU it is absolutely disgusting the amount of people walking around my town today. Queues a mile long outside takeaways, pavements crowed so people walking on the road... people are treating it like a bank holiday.

We're in a seaside town in North Yorkshire that relies heavily on tourism but we're also an area with no confirmed cases that has been descended on en masse with people from all over the country. We don't even have a fully functioning hospital for locals if they become ill.

We actually own a holiday cottage here but I've cancelled and refunded all bookings until June and will continue to do until the restrictions are lifting because it's the right thing to do... I would happily have my town barricaded to outsiders from now until the time is safe!

Enough4me · 21/03/2020 21:21

16MMN123 seriously!?

The same thing has happened in France and Italy. People in the UK asking Londoners to not follow suit are trying to appeal to common sense. Stop travelling it will spread it!

savechanges35 · 21/03/2020 21:22

UYScuti - I posted this earlier

Just so you know the first cases of the virus were in York, Brighton & Hove, East Essex, Wirral & Surrey.

It then spread to Torbay, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Sussex (East & West) & 1 case in London.

With the density of London & people constantly travelling backwards & forwards, London is suffering as large cities do.

Perhaps the people in your communities also helped to spread it!

UYScuti · 21/03/2020 21:23

@MMN123
oh sorry, looks like I triggered you there, do you have a 2nd home in the sticks by any chance?

Travelling to 2nd homes is highly selfish.

savechanges35 · 21/03/2020 21:30

TellerTuesday4EVA

You do know the first confirmed cases were in York, don't you?

Don't worry we won't hold it against you.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 21/03/2020 21:35

@savechanges35 I did know that.... I don't see the relevance... I don't live in York 🤷🏻‍♀️

Enough4me · 21/03/2020 21:36

The highest number of cases are now in London.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 21/03/2020 21:47

If you are carrying on as normal and going to a market and sharing jokes with neighbours you are not social distancing or self isolating. You are all spreading the virus between you, so please don't blame other people from different areas.

You are socialising because you think the problem is London. You are just a few weeks behind, please stay in.

THIS IS SPOT ON

Enough4me · 21/03/2020 21:50

I'm staying in, I'm asking Londeners to stay in too.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 21/03/2020 22:01

get in a lift in a london hospital and you won't hear an english accent,
I unfortunately have been spending a lot of time in London hospitals recently. I can assure you there are English and London accents aplenty.

Well since I live and work there, I can assure you that there are not. So you don't live in London, but you come to use London facilities. And yet we Londoners are not welcome even when we drive, with no symptoms from A to B, to isolate because its not possible to do so in London due to DH being an essential worker - he has stayed, to help those affected, without prejudice, wherever they are from, Rural little England attitudes on here are a joke - WE know whats coming, so we've safely fled and isolated whilst you are all out parading around as though its a London problem.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 22:04

Still not one person saying they have cancelled their holidays and lost all the money within the UK.
