With talk of London going into lockdown tomorrow can I remind second home owners that Cornwall has one hospital. Devon has four hospitals. Where I live in Devon there is no food in any of the supermarkets. Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx.

In a less populated area there is far less chance of me passing on the virus if I have it without knowing. Natural social distancing.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:10

Yes. But I go into much bigger shops at home with far far more people.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:11

It doesn’t matter if you go to an area with zero cases you could be the one that brings it to the area.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:11

Is everyone on this thread cancelling their holidays I wonder? Are you all accepting the loss of a lot of money rather than go , even if it is to a less populated area?

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:12

Marsha are you cancelling your holiday?

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:12

Hell yes. Cancelling. Ds meant to go to Lakes at Easter with friends and we cancelled. Because there’s meant to be no non essential travel.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:13

He was a bit upset but perked up when friends said they’d redo after it’s all over.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:14

Would it work on reverse? All those in rural areas must not go to cities or towns in case they carry infection?

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:14

Did you lose all the money?

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:15

Yep. No non essential travel. We need to stop carrying it around infecting new areas.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:16

I don’t know yet mother is finding out. I don’t really care I just said keep it and see if you can postpone it. It wasn’t loads as just Ds.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:16

I wonder if holiday companies are seeing the cancellation of all their bookings in the Uk. I think not.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:17

Well it is loads for us. We also stand to lost thousands on a holiday abroad.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:17

I’d hope so. But people are selfish sadly. Still if urge people to do it. It will result in higher death rate in three to four weeks.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:18

I’d urge

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:18

Abroad?

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:20

Do you have two booked? Here and abroad

Enough4me · 21/03/2020 19:21

It's so selfish, all the "I want to walk around somewhere nice" crap. This is not extra holiday time and yes people will lose holidays and money...and lives!!

As someone SI I am not even going to my front door, but talking out of a window if anyone knocks. I wish all of the general public would wake up.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:21

Later in the year. It looks unlikely we can go and I doubt we’ll be able to claim in travel insurance.
I would be interested to know if generally most people on this thread are cancelling all their holidays without being able to recoup the cost.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:22

Yes I do but haven’t had a holiday in a long time.

Gwynfluff · 21/03/2020 19:22

Toomuchtrouble4me

We have been asked not to undertake non essential travel and we know the Italian situation was worsened by people leaving cities and going to coastal areas. Why do you think you’re actions are somehow separate to this?

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:23

I don’t think you’ll be able to go with flights off and FCO ruling. Borders closed. Depends where and when though.

GinnyStrupac · 21/03/2020 19:26

If second home owners and holidaymakers think that the advice against all non essential travel doesn't apply to them, how about:

  1. Are you taking all your own food and other supplies to last you for the duration, or are you shopping locally? If you are shopping locally then you are increasing the risk to yourselves of contracting this viral pneumonia from locals and you are increasing the risk to locals of you spreading it to them. If you are shopping locally you are also depleting stocks for local people, in areas where there is already limited supply, especially at this time of year. Everything is closing or has closed, including pubs and restaurants attached to hotels, so what are you eating and drinking?
  2. If you do get ill, you are taking yourself to areas where an ambulance will take longer to reach you and then longer to get you to hospital. When you get there you will find very limited NHS services available, including ICU beds and ventilators. All this poses an increased risk to you, puts additional strain on these limited, smaller NHS services, posing a risk to local people who have no choice in the matter because they actually live or work there.
  3. If you do get ill, you, and your DCs will be miles away from your support networks of family, friends and neighbours.

We have had the chance to go away in the UK, immediately as schools have closed and then exactly as we normally would over the coming months. I fully understand all the temptations to do so, (including having a vulnerable family member or not wanting to lose money), but have decided for the reasons given above to stay at home.

It seems selfish and foolish not to stay at home.

RosesandIris · 21/03/2020 19:27

Right okay so the government are actually saying NO ONE should go on holiday all this year. Anywhere. In that case they should ask all holiday companies to refund customers immediately. They should ban all companies advertising holidays and close all hotels.
They haven’t done this. I am puzzled as to why not.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 19:27

Besides the instruction is no non essential travel here and abroad. Wish they’d get firm with sanctions fines etc to stop people thinking they are somehow exempt.
