To think that the years of I'm alright jack are now coming home to roost

The tories have eroded public services and promoted self reliance heavily and this has made society into one where people look after themselves and it's every person out for themselves.

We are seeing the impact of this first hand more now as we all think more about me first and sod the rest

Put very simply, you're quite right.

SpaghettiSharon · 19/03/2020 06:51

Yep. Thatcher’s children are finally facing their reality of their “look after number one and fuck everyone else” society Sad.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 19/03/2020 06:53

Yes. It is a bit rich to expect everyone to pull together when for years greed and individualism has been rewarded.

Ponoka7 · 19/03/2020 06:53

When this virus started posters, very much took an 'I'm alright jack' stance. Then the country did with it's panic buying and stock pilling, so are any of us that different?

BillywilliamV · 19/03/2020 06:56

Do you lot REALLY have nothing else to do, or think about?

bananaskinsnomnom · 19/03/2020 06:56

I agree. I completely agree.

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2020 06:57

Yeah, you’re still not getting a labour government though.🤣

Scruffyoak · 19/03/2020 06:59

Yep and we will all feel it now.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/03/2020 06:59

Agreed. And I’m fascinated by the completely un-Tory policies this situation is forcing the Tory’s to implement. No small state here.

LakieLady · 19/03/2020 07:02

I rather hope that all this helps people to realise that there is such a thing as society and that it's all the better if we co-operate and look out for one another, rather than compete and trample over one another in the scramble to get to the top of the heap.

But I'm also under no illusions that a lot of people's only motivation is self-interest.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 19/03/2020 07:02

I don’t think selfishness and greed and profiteering is necessarily affiliated with a political party.

If people are going to be greedy and selfish then they will be.

StylishMummy · 19/03/2020 07:03

I'm seeing the opposite, WhatsApp and Facebook are full of offers of people to go and fetch us supplies, offering to support older people, childrens entertainment offering free skype toddler groups, teachers offering to help with home tutoring, people offering cakes to health care workers.
I actually think this is showing Britain will pull together in times of need, but you carry on blaming the tories Hmm

IndoorWeather · 19/03/2020 07:03

Yy, @BuffaloCauliflower.

Summerhillsquare · 19/03/2020 07:03

Abso-frigging-lutely.

SallyWD · 19/03/2020 07:14

Strongly agree OP

Me too. There’s always been a sense of community here though and it’s a very safe Tory seat.

Tinkerbell456 · 19/03/2020 07:17

I think we have become quite self absorbed and materialistic in Western nations. One good thing thing about this situation is that it may promote people being more community minded and well, kinder. It may well foster good relationships all over. I know I could improve my community mindedness and general thoughtfulness.

redcarbluecar · 19/03/2020 07:18

Yeah I agree. I think we will see the consequences of complacency in quite a few areas.

turdtimelucky · 19/03/2020 07:18

Brits appear to be particularly insular. A lot of other countries are more community minded. I guess certain parts on England are similar. London is definitely every man for himself. I was ridiculed and sneered at on another thread for saying that nobody gives a fuck about anyone and that people are deluded if they think they do. I was told I was sad and must have mental health problems. No - I've got two eyes and two ears and a brain. Just look at the shops stripped bare and you'll see for yourself. But no - it was a chance to tell me how sad and pathetic I am. Idiots.

Pixxie7 · 19/03/2020 07:18

As much as I dislike the tories, they can’t be blamed for everything even during the war you had this with the black market etc. Survival is a basic instinct what we are seeing is pure greed on some people’s part.

TeddyIsaHe · 19/03/2020 07:22

They have fucked the NHS, people are going to die that could have been saved because of this.

They should have done more, sooner. But they didn’t. Because they’re twats.

I’m in an amazing WhatsApp group with 150 people in my postcode, all offering help and support. I can still think the Tories have completely fucked this country though.

lmcneil003 · 19/03/2020 07:22

The blitz spirit was mostly bullsh1t anyhow.
Even during WWII it was the same. People look after themselves and their family primarily. It will be ever thus.

DdraigGoch · 19/03/2020 07:24

YABU. We had years of Labour telling people not to take responsibility for their own actions, the state will always bail them out etc. No surprise that people have no self control.

lmcneil003 · 19/03/2020 07:26

Initially yes, but wait 3 months. Also, I don't believe many would share their LAST pint of milk, loaf of bread, etc with a neighbour. Charity and community only goes so far.
Also, people are sticking to their own. My road has a whatsapp group, but will do nothing to help the homeless guy on the highstreet...

sportinguista · 19/03/2020 07:26

I'm seeing a lot of community groups in other areas but around here there is no 'community' and I think people would take quite a while to notice if we were in difficulty. I do keep an eye out for an elderly neighbour but her daughter is coming in regularly and she lives with a son who is still relatively young. Fights broke out at the local supermarket yesterday so I simply think that in some places there simply isn't that spirit any more.
