The tories have eroded public services and promoted self reliance heavily and this has made society into one where people look after themselves and it's every person out for themselves.

We are seeing the impact of this first hand more now as we all think more about me first and sod the rest

And where is your evidence that other parties would do differently?

Every party would be scrabbling and under criticism.

We are ALL going to be affected. Some it will hit harder than others sadly. Me included. And I don’t believe it would have mattered who was in nr 10.

And where is your evidence that other parties would do differently?

The Tories do not prioritise the NHS or education unless it costs them votes.

That’s been clearly evident ever since 2010. What more evidence do I need.

The Tories are the party of "there is no such thing as society" (Thatcher) it is basically their raison d'etre!

The80sweregreat · 19/03/2020 13:06

A lot of my dh's old friends were like this : splashing the cash and not giving a jot about anyone but themselves! They are probably the ones out buying nappies etc to sell on when their own kids are now about 30. Greedy and materialistic.
Nobodies perfect ( I'm not) but my own parents brought me up to care about people and show some empathy.
It's not hard, but some people lack it all.

Aren't the Tories the party of the Big Society too? 😂 Though admittedly that did basically mean "Help each other, as we're not helping anyone!"

SerendipityJane · 19/03/2020 13:13

The Tories are the party of "there is no such thing as society" (Thatcher) it is basically their raison d'etre!

Funnily enough, that oft-cited part of the full quote manages to reverse it's meaning. And I despise all Thatcher stood for.

It's a testament to the mind boggling self interests of the Tories - and media - that it never gets quoted in full, where it actually turns out ...

"They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours."

... it has a completely different complexion. I've highlighted the sensible bit, and left the bit the Tories lapped up in normal text ...

It's true that a lot of what Mrs Thatcher said is misquoted at times.
I lived through the Mrs Thatcher years and what her party did promote was greed and materialistic values and the money markets which were nothing but a house of cards.
I've never voted for them but a lot of people do ( including many of my own family and dh)
A lot of people became very rich off the back of these policies and selfishness and looking after number one was the way to go. As demonstrated in the last few days people can be uncaring and selfish. It's not news.
Nothing to do with this pandemic , but history will show the various Tory governments as mostly the same : maybe John major will be seen as a bit more a Tory with a small c but
mostly their model for power was Mrs T.
She has been misquoted in this 'society 'speech though!
