@CharlieTangoBanana 💐 for you.

This is a shitty time but it will pass. Stress probably isn't helping. Do you do craft, puzzles or read? Find a happy place doing things you enjoy xx

unchienandalusia · 18/03/2020 20:29

People party politicking over this make me sick. Give your whole body a wobble.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 20:31

@ofwarren you OK mate? You've been a bit quiet. Brew
I don't understand the UK schools thing. If children of key workers are still going, then teachers are still going...and who decides? And when Mr Potato said no, no plans for limiting movement because Britain is a country founded on freedom.
If it wasn't so serious it'd be like watching Mr Bean.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 20:31

Say what?

Defenbaker · 18/03/2020 20:39

I think the govt has handled this quite well, not perfectly, but overall they seem to have taken a balanced approach. I was pleased when they announced the school closures, because I had read threads on here about how desperate things were in some schools, due to staff shortages, lack of basic hygiene supplies and all the uncertainty which have affected the pupils and staff. It is good that schools will be kept open to look after children of key workers, and vulnerable children. Hopefully the schools will be able to cope with providing care and education to the reduced numbers.

I have been looking at the stats again today, and noticed that Germany seems to have a much lower death rate percentage than most other countries. Is this simply down to having a better equipped medical system and more ventilators, or are there other factors at play? Can our NHS learn valuable lessons from them (apart from the obvious - we need more ventilators and medics).

Just saw a news report about Iran. They seem to be in denial about the seriousness of the situation, and the science involved. One of their leaders made a statement along the lines of "Why are you listening to the west/false information? Why are you not listening to God?" He also said that he'd had the illness, but had bathed in holy water and was cured of it. One week later he died. Meanwhile, many Iranians are busy travelling around the country during a current national holiday. I'm so glad I don't live in Iran.

Speaking to my sil tonight we agreed that we don't think the government knows what they are doing and are making it up as they go.

Johnson said in the presser that on Monday all schools would be open. But it gave the impression it would be reviewed. My suspicion is one designated school in an area is likely once they've worked out wtf they are doing.

Sil doesn't know how it will work over Easter holidays. She and bil take time off for child care reasons. But if we go the way of Italy then it'd be cancelled.

That's where I think we'd get drafted in. If we can get across the country that is. And bil and sil may well have been exposed... So I don't know.

It would be helpful to know precisely so we could work it out now...

There are significant numbers of people who have died but whose death hasn’t been attributed to the coronavirus because they died at home or in a nursing home and so they weren’t swabbed,” said Giorgio Gori, mayor of the town of Bergamo.

I can believe this, sadly. I've spoken on other threads about my experience with what almost has to be COVID-19, but which probably won't be diagnosed despite what they're saying about ramping up the testing. Last weekend was really scary, as I felt like I was about to drown in my own mucus.

I came through it because I'm 50 not 70 or 80, and because my DH was with me. For an elderly person living alone it would be terrifying, and I wouldn't be at all confident it would be diagnosed as COVID-19, without a relative to press for that to happen. Not if an ambulance wasn't sent out, as was the case with me.

SistemaAddict · 18/03/2020 20:45

Our buses are going on a reduced timetable so no idea how students would get to a designated school unless it's their own.

Defenbaker · 18/03/2020 20:46

@CharlieTangoBanana That all sounds very upsetting, but please don't wish yourself in hospital, you'd probably be more at risk in there than in your own home right now. Your job at the moment is to keep yourself safe, so that your children and grandchildren don't lose you. It must be hard being in isolation, but you will get through it and once the warm spring sunshine arrives maybe it will be possible to see your family outside, while keeping a safe distance from them. Take care.

CharlieTangoBanana · 18/03/2020 20:54

Thank you all for the kind words, I'm usually so level headed and yes I definitely wouldn't want to be in hospital now but I think back to all the other chest infections and bouts of pneumonia I've weathered and moaned about being in hospital and feel so guilty.
Living with respiratory failure is never much fun but living is what I've tried so very hard to do since my diagnosis.
I need to start taking regular breaks from the stats and do some stuff to make me smile, it's so hard not having family around.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/03/2020 20:55

Germany's death rate might be lower partially because they record cause of death as the underlying health condition not corona? Or so I read?

Mittens030869 · 18/03/2020 21:00

@Defenbaker That's true, I was told that I would be better off at home, as I could easily catch something else at hospital. The only thing that would make it necessary was if I needed a ventilator. Actually, at the time when my DH was told this, he thought I was asleep whereas in actual fact I wasn't, I was unable to talk or move, because at that point I could barely breathe. Until I finally found the strength to cough and puke.

Then decongestants like otrivine and albas oil, and also Benylin Mucus Max. Eventually it cleared, but there was so much mucus! If I hadn't got it out, I wouldn't have made it.

It's a scary time, but I'm grateful now that I didn't go into hospital. We have 2 adopted DDs (10 and 7) with attachment issues and it would have been very frightening for them.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 21:01

That seems to be what the media outlets are saying about German stats yes
Same in Italy though, which is scary.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/03/2020 21:03

Glad you feel a bit better Mittens that must have been terrifying...

Mittens030869 · 18/03/2020 21:05

@CharlieTangoBanana I'm sorry you've been through all that, wishing you a full recovery. ThanksThanks

DivisionBelles · 18/03/2020 21:06

I'm actually getting quite scared now. It all seems to be ramping up quite suddenly. I'm glad both DC are home with us. DD lives in Birmingham, but has been home for a visit this week and decided she can wfh here. Work are sending her equipment to us. DS is at uni at the other side of the country, and now his uni has suspended all face to face teaching, he's getting the night train home tonight.

I'm worried about work, as the industry I'm in is likely to be hit hard by this and I may not have a job in a couple of months. I feel I just want to lockdown and wait for this all to be over.

Mittens030869 · 18/03/2020 21:08

@MurrayTheMonk Thank you. It was frightening, but what was worse was how frightened my DDs were. And they've also lost their birth mum (they're full birth siblings) and their respective foster carers.

CoteFolie · 18/03/2020 21:10

Lurker who panicked when I couldn't find the new thread. Thank you Thanks

Mrsappleby · 18/03/2020 21:11

I keep seeing lots of Facebook posts about lockdown being imminent.
Anyone else?

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 21:12

@Mittens030869 That sounds really horrible. I'm terrified right now. More so that my children will get it.

Helenj1977 · 18/03/2020 21:13

@Mrsappleby Yes. We heard that London is imminent. Dp has had emails this evening about remote working.

Mrsappleby · 18/03/2020 21:16

I don't know whether to be more scared or relieved.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 21:18

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but Lombardia is now saying it will test absolutely everyone. Apparently Rome is thinking of the same (am listening to our mayor who is explaining why that won't currently be possible here)
We have over 400 new cases in my region today and he says the storm will hit sometime next week. Sad

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 21:19

Sorry misheard, Veneto everyone to be tested, Emilia Romagna possibly.

SansaSnark · 18/03/2020 21:20

Just in case it is relevant to anyone, I've just had an email from my Head which suggests that school attendance for those it's still open to will essentially be opt in from Monday.

So if your child has an ECHP and you'd like them not to attend, then that's fine.
