London lockdown by Saturday?

adiposegirl2 · 18/03/2020 17:48

I live in a top 5 CV London borough. went to the supermarket today.

I was the twilight zone. My children and I was in full protective gear complete with anti bac wipes to wipe down my shopping. But no one else was. I saw 3 people with rubber gloves but that's it.

I was openly ridiculed, laughed at, treble and quadruple looks, recorded. Hello we are in the grip of a pandemic!! Now I can understand how Noah felt when he was building the ark: except we all know what's coming, heck it's already here.

Methinks the severity of the situation is not getting through to people.

Now the schools are to be officially closed from Friday, considering London is a CV hotspot, I'd wager a London lockdown by Sunday night.

What do you think the likelihood of that is?

To add, BJ said words to the effect of we should consider we are in war time.
I think a London lockdown might be facilitated by the army as we dont have enough police officers.

Yes lockdown by Sunday night until 5/6 months as a minimum. 100%.

Meruem · 18/03/2020 18:10

North London here. I just said to my DC that I reckon we will be on official lock down within a week. We’re complying with all the advice but many aren’t and BJ strongly pointed out that nothing is off the table re enforcing people staying in.

CourtneyB123 · 18/03/2020 18:12

Yeah there will be a lockdown, theres been a few talks about it apparently. Army was seen out in Clapham today so I would be ready for one by this weekend

bank100 · 18/03/2020 18:23

North london here. I actually hope they lock us down temporarily. As DH has to travel to work on a bus and the underground each day. He can't work from home everyday until there is lock down. All my efforts to distance / clean / be careful seem futile when he's potentially bringing germs back from busy transport and workplace.

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 18:32

I don’t think that starting rumours Is helpful at this time.

ThunderboltandLightning · 18/03/2020 18:33

Well, to be honest with you, wiping down shopping with antibacterial wipes is more than a little crazy. It will do nothing to kill off a virus, but if it helps you deal with it, crack on.

DH is working on the ventilator project. Half his sites are in London. He's not going to be locked down any time soon unless he gets it, in which case we all will. Yay, can't wait.

Lycidas · 18/03/2020 18:35

@ThunderboltandLightning

Why won't wiping down shopping kill viruses? If we know that it can last on surfaces for many hours, and if certain wipes, e.g Dettol, do kill off coronaviruses?

Meruem · 18/03/2020 18:36

We’re not starting rumours. We’re discussing a very real possibility.

hopeishere · 18/03/2020 18:42

What did your "full protective gear" consist of???

The whole country needs locking down, not just London. If it’s London alone, people will “ flee” and spread it like the did in Italy and Spain.

BadCatDirtyCat · 18/03/2020 19:01

@adiposegirl2 What exactly is "full protective gear"?

NanSlayer · 18/03/2020 19:05

First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win and people are interested.

Just ignore them but be careful because we are entering the denial fighty phase, get your goodies and stay safe relax and look after your immune system.

Musicforsmorks · 18/03/2020 19:05

I’m sure many are filling the car and heading to country as we speak.

EmpressoftheMundane · 18/03/2020 19:21

A five to six month kick down is impossible. The economy will crash completely. People would stop worrying about the virus and worry about the fact that they are homeless and hungry. It would be post apocalyptic.

Growingboys · 18/03/2020 19:24

So bored of superiror idiots saying anti-bac wipes don't kill viruses @ThunderboltandLightning

Dettol anti-bac wipes (which are clearly marked as such) kill coronavirus. Fact.

I really hope London doesn't go into full lockdown. It's bloody hard enough getting what item we need now and we can go to the shops dread to think what it would be like if we was on a lockdown. deliveries are missing vital items that are needed unless that sort that it would be impossible to be on lockdown for us.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 19:30

anti-bac wipes kill bacteria not viruses. If you want to kill a virus you need to use soap and water

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 18/03/2020 19:42

Yes, taking it to unaffected areas with smaller, less well equipped hospitals.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 18/03/2020 19:55

There is an army battalion building in Clapham and they were getting on a train!

ThunderboltandLightning · 18/03/2020 19:55

Nowhere does the OP say she was using Dettol.
Even Dettol's website only says they would expect them to work against it, but it hasn't been tested. Even if she was, I stand by it being ridiculous to be wiping down shopping in the supermarket, that way madness lies.

I get that people are scared, I am not exactly filled with joy about the high probability of my husband bringing it home from work with him, but am trying to keep it in perspective. But you know what, big picture, he is doing something important to save other people's lives.

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 20:02

Army was seen out in Clapham today so I would be ready for one by this weekend

What were they doing and why does it mean we will lockdown soon?

Seriously?
