Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

I have not come across a single supermarket that doesn't have the items you say.

Bread and meat have started disappearing. And alcohol!

Sarah510 · 17/03/2020 19:22

well I just used the last of my pasta, have a little bit of rice left, some cous cous. have no meat, no veg, 3 kiwis and a few tins of tuna. haven't had loo paper for 3 days now. I'm really worried. Going to drive round all the local supermarkets again tonight. shelves are bare. am working full time so cant go during the day. maybe I should go first thing in the morn. has anyone tried that.

NanSlayer · 17/03/2020 19:23

@OnlyFoolsnMothers failure to prepare is preparing to fail.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/03/2020 19:23

Shortages of fresh foods seem a bit puzzling, unless it's down to lower numbers eating out/getting takeaways so eating in, and/or people who usually eat junk belatedly trying to eat healthily.

supadupapupascupa · 17/03/2020 19:24

Contact you smaller local businesses. Many around here are offering nine order and delivery. Bakery's, butcher, farms etc

Princessfaffalot · 17/03/2020 19:25

I’m in west London and can’t get any basics at all. I’ve been to Tesco, Morrison’s, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Lidl and didn’t get half of what we need. No loo roll, no cleaning products, no bread milk eggs butter flour pasta tinned goods. I’m getting pissed off with it now, people are so bloody selfish. I’m going to have to get up and go at first light.

Leflic · 17/03/2020 19:25

Chichester area....appalling. Everyone shops first thing, nothing left by mid morning.
That’s fresh and frozen meat, fruit and veg. gone. No preoacked sliced bread ( literally not even one loaf or roll) but there was fresh bread even at 4pm.

QueSera · 17/03/2020 19:25

Sounds like you should have done some preparation, this issue has been in the news for weeks/months.

Leflic · 17/03/2020 19:27

speakout where? Roughly,so we have context.

Alsohuman · 17/03/2020 19:28

Went to our local M&S foodhall this afternoon. Every shelf was full.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 17/03/2020 19:28

Stocks of certain items have been a bit thin on the ground round here (Glasgow). I generally run my food with having a good solid months worth of food items in the cupboard. I don’t let it fall below that level ever. I have been this way for as long as I can remember. Only once have I had to live off the stockpile and that was after joint redundancy (DH&I worked for same company). We were on jobseekers for a few weeks and then I got a new job but as it was freelance I didn’t get paid until three months after I started (just the way it works). We were down to the bare bones by the time I got my first pay and counting the pennies to buy things like milk and bread.

For the past 4/5 weeks I’ve been topping up my stockpile further to get it to a 6 week + level. Nothing drastic but maybe 2 tins of carrots, 2 tins of potatoes, I usually buy 1 tin of baked beans a week but have been buying 2. So no I’ve not been going crazy but I’ve been gradually adding to my already substantial stockpile. I’ve never cleared a shelf and I never buy any more than 2/3 of one item but I know there are currently issues arising with the food supply (on the France end of the tunnel) so things will start to run out completely soon.

If everyone had a stockpile already built up and been prepping in advance then we would be seeing the issues we are having now. It’s the people who only usually buy a week of food at a time and are now trying to get and extra 14 days worth of food in incase they are quarantined that are causing the problems. Not the preppers.

AnnaMagnani · 17/03/2020 19:28

Cambridgeshire - can get anything except loo roll, hand gel, pasta and rice. Depending when you go, the soap aisle may be empty too. I was due to stock up my chest freezer with meat anyway and had no problem getting my usual half a pig, half a lamb from the farm shop - not prepping, it's how I usually shop.

Nobody has cottoned on to social distancing or wearing masks or anything like that.

My DM is nearer London and was given a stash of paracetamol from under the counter today by staff who were challenging shoppers as to why they were buying it. She also loves veg so was delighted that there was only broccoli left.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 17/03/2020 19:28

What is a stunt pineapple?

SoupDragon · 17/03/2020 19:29

The Dicks are out in force on this thread 🙄

SudokuQueen · 17/03/2020 19:29

I'm actually beginning to hate the panic buyers.

Keep seeing stories about elderly people struggling with getting any food, any toiletries, or anything really. They will starve to death, they won't die from coronavirus. And it won't be reported.

Anyone still panic buying - you are a bunch of selfish pricks who deserve nothing in life.

AParallelUniverse · 17/03/2020 19:29

So to all preppers are you still shopping?

This week I have bought 4 pints of milk for my family of three and a block of cheese. That all right with you is it? Meets with your approval? As I'm sure you're planning to take more off the shelves than that. 🙄

BruceAndNosh · 17/03/2020 19:30

Since I got a new freezer before Christmas., I have been cooking meals for 4 when there are just 2 of us, and freezing the spare portions. Plus a couple of small batch cooking sessions in January. My freezer now has enough meals for over 2 weeks, which I am keeping in case we have to self isolate in the coming weeks
My "panic buying" today would have involved just buying the ingredient for dinner etc for the next three days, ie a usual shop.
Expect the shelves were bare...

Laiste · 17/03/2020 19:31

Sainsburys at 10 am had :
zero loo roll, tissues, kitchen towel, BREAD, pasta, bleach, calpol, wetwipes, frozen veg, fishfingers, pizza ect.

one or two on the shelf of : pasta sauce, tinned soup, tinned peas, bread rolls, bin bags (?), bacon, kids cough mixture, mince, flour, sugar, tinned soup.

Loads of fresh veg, roasting joints, fruit, cat/dog food, clothes washing, baby milk.

Tonight eldest DD tells me that 15 miles up the road (we're rural) she found pasta in the Tesco there. Said there was bread too. (wish she'd bloomin' said!!)

DH had to go to 3 garages before he could find any diesel for his work van. What's that about?

My friend went to go to Nationwide to make a payment on something and the queue was out the door of people taking out quantities of cash. Again, what am i missing here?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/03/2020 19:31

A stunt pineapple is a fresh pineapple that is bought to augment a fresh fruit basket/bowl that nobody will ever get around to eating but looks bloody impressive.

Leflic · 17/03/2020 19:32

I have no space to store things. My kitchen is galley sized I have a living/fining room as my other downstairs space. Under the stairs is my office. Tiny non waterproof garden shed with ..garden stuff in.
Added to which I don’t have a fiver a week to spend in emergency loo rolls soup cans and pasta which go out of date. Not excuses. Genuine reasons I can’t hoard food.
Very telling Waitrose was stripped bare before the others though.

stickerqueen · 17/03/2020 19:32

going early still don't guarantee you will be able to get what you need Hubby's been early every morning and still not able to get everything.
Today I went with him because I did not believe he couldn't get any size 6 nappies but it's true 6 shop no size 6.

Slurpy · 17/03/2020 19:33

Please get your terminology right. Preppers are prepared, I've had beans and rice under my bed since March, due to Brexit fears. If anything, preppers are reducing the strain on the supermarkets.

Noodlenosefraggle · 17/03/2020 19:35

I think people are panic buying things that the papers say people are panic buying, whether they are going to use it or not. I wonder if they will use the stuff before they head out to the shops again?

Snaptheirfingers · 17/03/2020 19:36

Maybe it's semantics but I think preppers like me have help those who couldn't or didn't think to stock up.
I've always been a bit of a prepper, I like a bargain so buy up special offers and my anxiety is abated with a full larder. What's really sent prepping in to over-drive has been Brexit. I didn't want shortages/raised prices of European/Mediterranean foods, so stocked up. Each time Brexit was put off or delayed I eased up and used, then each time a deadline came close I stocked up again. This has been going on for years now. I'm very organised I know what I've got, where, "use in date order" is the mantra in this house!
I don't know how long this crisis will continue but I have that "finished the Christmas food shop" feeling. The larders and freezers are stocked and I can leave the shops to others.
I'm going to use the time others are speeding careering around supermarkets to help my neighbours and the community who need support.

notangelinajolie · 17/03/2020 19:36

Where have you been this past week? We all knew it was coming, I haven't gone out and stockpiled but I did realise there would be a rush on the shops so I've made sure we have enough to keep us going for a good few days until the food panic settles down a bit. Have you got no food in at all?
Living in a major city, it would be a miracle not to catch this virus and planning ahead to ensure your kids are fed while you are all cooped up indoors in isolation does not make a person scum. It makes them sensible.
And no, I don't have a hoard of loo rolls.
