Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

Some of my local bakeries are offering deliveries through Deliveroo and Uber Eats now. I got bread and pastries this morning that way. Obviously a lot more expensive but it was such a nice treat in the middle of all this.

Why are so many people worried about food waste? I’ve bought lots of fresh fruit. And vegetables. Guess what happens if it starts to turn?

Chop the fruit, stew it, freeze it in icecube portions. Defrost. Adds fruit to breakfast/ nat yogurt/ eaten alone just to get fruit into you.
Freeze berries for smoothies. Stick bananas in the freezer. Can be used in smoothies or Banana bread.

Vegetables can be used to make a stir fry/ vegetable dishes.

Milk can be made into yogurt and other milk dishes, extending the life there also. Soured milk and yogurt can actually make a few dishes.

The assumption that people have bought food and don’t know how to use it and it will go to waste is a little rude, no?

sassbott · 19/03/2020 18:13

And veggies don’t need bulking out per se.
A lot of indian dishes are vegetable based. It’s about cooking the vegetables in a tasty enough base that makes them filling and wholesome on their own.

nogoodusernames · 19/03/2020 18:14

I went into Lidl fifteen minutes before closing last night- completely quiet and tons of loo roll and long life milk. I’m guessing they had a delivery later on and put out the stock ready for the morning?

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 19/03/2020 18:17

Lentils, dried beans

None of these in the shops ive been to, im lazy so use tins but they didnt have any (except borlotti for some reason, tonnes of that) so I thought id look for dry...none of that either

H1978 · 19/03/2020 18:26

I don’t see the point of supermarkets limiting not 3 items on an online shop when they are not imposing the same in the shops because it gets picked from the store so anyone with a later slot will not get what they want because it’s already been bought by the people who have gone instore thus depriving those like us who are self isolating and can’t get to the shops Sad

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 19/03/2020 18:40

My dad went to our local iceland and they had a one item per person thing and he said they were taking things back out of the customers baskets

I would not like to do that job

Alsohuman · 19/03/2020 18:43

The assumption that people have bought food and don’t know how to use it and it will go to waste is a little rude, no?

Realistic though. Look at how many on MN bin food as soon as it reaches its bb date. Why buy stuff you can’t eat before it “turns” when it means other people have to go without? A little antisocial, no?

sassbott · 19/03/2020 22:10

No. If people are being told to self isolate for 14 days. And normally I would stock up with fresh fruit / veg / milk probably 4 times in that period. How is buying enough to stretch as much through that anti-social? It’s a balance.

At no point when I have done my fruit/ veg/ milk purchase have any fresh items been out of stock.
The things out of stock in my supermarkets are toilet roll/ hand stuff/ soap/ paracetamol.

So how is my buying fresh things anti-social? I don’t understand people on these threads. They are positive seething when people are asking questions about self isolating (I.e it means complete) so how is getting the best healthy foods in that enable a family to self isolate and respect the guidelines anti-social?

I know what to do if less food gets eaten yes. The problem is none of us know who will get ill (most people report a complete loss of appetite). That means less food will be eaten. And I have a plan for the food that can spoil. If we don’t get I’ll and we are only doing ‘essential trips’ then again surely havin as much in as possible to avoid non essential outings is better is it not?

BooseysMom · 20/03/2020 21:42

@sassbott.. totally agree

Frangipanini · 21/03/2020 22:05

I can see why people are buying lots. Where I live I know lots of people, including myself, who have zero support network and don't have anyone they can call on if they self isolate. I mentioned this to my DH today and he said that we would jut have to go down the shop even if we had CV. This is not an option as far as I am concerned. I was feeling guilty at being prepared but now I am not because the truth is, if I don't have 14 days worth of food in the house and need to isolate, I don't have anyone to help me out.

Waitingforadulthood · 21/03/2020 22:40

I stocked up. I'm not at all ashamed. I did not buy more than we need and I will not waste a thing. I bought extra knowing that with the dc off and me off work we will eat more, and instead of shopping every few days, I have to last two to three weeks (maybe more at which point we'll be eating the 2012 Bbe spam and that black rice I bought once on a whim)

Do I count as one of the guilty? I hope not. I can't say that if I could have afforded more I wouldn't have bought it. It's scary, and if I'm still isolating after the three weeks, what do I do? I stocked up last Friday expecting schools to close. Dd had symptoms last Tuesday which puts me in quarantine for two weeks. But the ds started coughing Thursday- I delay another two weeks. What the f happens if (when) I start coughing this week?!! Because I'll be both Ill and unable to feed us all. I now have a week or so worth of food left

Frangipanini · 22/03/2020 13:51

Plus, there are no supermarket delivery slots so if you are isolating for 14 days you are screwed unless you like Dominos pizzas.

HeresMe · 22/03/2020 14:31

Just been herons and B and M to pick a few things up, loads of stuff on shelfs and hardly any one in, I think a lot of people are just going to the supermarkets instead of trying discount stores.

HeresMe · 22/03/2020 14:31

Tinned tomatos pilled high.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/03/2020 14:50

Our Sainsburys had pretty much everything back this afternoon. Although of course no pasta, loo rolls, tinned tomatoes!

Frangipanini · 22/03/2020 16:31

Just went to our local Tesco. Friday and Sat it was chaos. Sunday, the shelves are full and not many people around at all. Clearly they are all down the beach or having parties or, they have reached peak fridge/ freezer capacity.

I can see loads of people scratching their heads saying WTF am I supposed to do with these tinned tomatoes.

Gronky · 22/03/2020 16:34

A friend in Birmingham just told me that, other than toilet roll and pasta, things were pretty much back to normal at Morrison's (things have been normal near me since around Wednesday).

I wonder why London had it so bad compared to the rest of the country?

mindproject · 22/03/2020 16:37

I went to Tesco to have a quick look and get a couple of bits. There was hardly anyone in there, no queue at all. There was plenty of bread and milk. There was nobody restocking any of the empty shelves (mainly tinned food, rice and loo roll), which was weird.

fussychica · 22/03/2020 16:48

DS and his nurse partner went to the early bird opening for NHS staff this morning, they couldn't even get in the car park!

DMJ6789 · 22/03/2020 16:50

Tesco was fine earlier. Very quiet and mostly stocked bar the usual Toilet Roll.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 24/03/2020 00:01

My small local co op had toilet roll today. Limited to one pack per customer. As was the baby formula and (sold out) hand wash. I suspect they must have had some stock earlier in the day if the sign was up.
I was out getting milk, bread, potatoes and tinned chicken soup for my parents in law. We are buying and dropping off what they need now as they are both over 70 with health issues. They are pretty well stocked but do need top ups of the essentials.

MadisonAvenue · 24/03/2020 00:16

I’ve had to visit three supermarkets today for bread, meat, milk and shampoo. As of yet I haven’t seen any difference in availability, the shelves are still bare.

BerthaBear · 24/03/2020 00:17

Sainsburys and Tesco here seem to be getting back to normal, except loo roll which is not always available.

Shops are much quieter than last week, thank goodness.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 05:47

Our Waitrose had fresh vegetables, fruit and milk yesterday so I was able to get a weeks worth in my lunch hour. it was very quiet in there.
