Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

OP posts:
CatBatCat · 17/03/2020 19:07

Nothing much in my local lidl or aldi. I had better luck in my local Asian and Polish markets. Plenty of tinned toms, chickpeas, pasta, rice, eggs, bread, meat and cheese.

chomalungma · 17/03/2020 19:07

I hope all those people buying up fresh produce such as vegetables use them before they go off.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/03/2020 19:07

You can’t call it what you like. You’ve just called preppers scum. Quite the opposite of what preppers are. They’re leaving food in the shops for everyone else when it’s needed.

Watermelontea · 17/03/2020 19:08

Must have missed the bit in the OP where you called people who prep, not panic, scum.
How are people who haven’t rushed the shelves in the past few weeks, therefore not helping to cause a shortage, scum?

Jolonglegs · 17/03/2020 19:09

I'm hoping that stocks will get back to normal soon as the shortages caused by over buying settle down. In the meantime, we can live without fresh friut and veg for a while can't we.

Frangipanini · 17/03/2020 19:10

Just to add. It's panic buyers like you that are causing the shortages. I just drove past my local Waitrose at 4.30pm and one massive lorry was pulling out and one was waiting to go in. They have a huge amount of food on them but unfortunately by the time the little old ladies get there tomorrow, it will have been picked clean by disorganised people who poured scorn on the rest of us when we predicted this 3 or 4 weeks ago.

IndecentFeminist · 17/03/2020 19:10

I'm buying some fresh, apples, yogurt etc that couldn't really be frozen. And ham I bought some of.

Apart from that I bought and froze meat over the last few months, have UHT for if the milk and milkman runs out, have extra butter and cheese at the very back of the fridge etc.

Our local Aldi is empty now apparently, Tesco online still showing stock if you can get a slot.

PhoneTwattery · 17/03/2020 19:10

FYI I consider all preppers scum!

REALLY showing your ignorance there. I’m fully stocked without having to panic buy a thing. Crack on.

cushioncovers · 17/03/2020 19:12

Get up early op and shop then.

It's not preppers that have emptied the shelves.

JellyfishandShells · 17/03/2020 19:12

Tesco SW London fully stocked with fruit/veg/fresh meat and fish. Just had a nice bit of salmon with some broccoli

IndecentFeminist · 17/03/2020 19:12

I reckon within a week the shops will have caught up, it is last night's announcement that has people freaked. When I last went in a supermarket at the weekend there were a few lower than normal shelves but pretty ok. However since yesterday it has gone bonkers.

Theworldisfullofgs · 17/03/2020 19:14

Tried to but bread flour the other day. I make our bread usually. None.

Then I heard of someone who bought it but didnt realise you needed yeast too Hmm

slashlover · 17/03/2020 19:14

FYI I consider all preppers scum!

In the last two weeks I have bought NO toilet roll, NO tins, NO packets (pasta/rice/etc), NO meat (vegetarian), NO cleaning products or toiletries.

I have bought bread, fruit and veg BUT not in insane amounts as I have some tinned and frozen already.

Explain how I am 'scum' for prepping.

Manchestermanchester · 17/03/2020 19:15

Go in the morning

CoraPirbright · 17/03/2020 19:15

titchy I was just coming on to say the same - a friend of mine visited their local Waitrose in central London yesterday lunchtime and said that the shelves were positively groaning. I guess it just depends on the time you visit.

What I don’t understand is why we have empty shelves here from panic buyers and yet on the continent where they have things much worse, they don't. What is it in our national psyche that has made us react that way? Is it an extreme version of “an Englishman’s home...” or some sort of collective memory of the deprivations of rationing? I am sure it would make for a fascinating psychological study. Perhaps some PhD student out there is making notes even now!

NotStayingIn · 17/03/2020 19:18

I wonder where you live. I can't stop travelling through London (because of my job) and have been in several London supermarkets over the last few days. Whilst I would agree with no toilet roll, paper towels, pasta I have not come across a single supermarket that doesn't have the items you say.

Marieo · 17/03/2020 19:19

There seems to be no chicken here, plenty of red meat, even some pasta, beans and toilet roll. The local boots even had handgel yesterday! Why chicken?

GreyGardens88 · 17/03/2020 19:20

I went to Tesco at half 8 this morning, there were 3 packs of toilet paper and 4 packs of spaghetti, I picked up 1 toilet paper and 2 spaghetti, by the time I had paid the shelves were empty again. You need to go early.

Gingermidget · 17/03/2020 19:20

Preppers are scum??? I haven’t been to a supermarket in nearly two weeks and that was only for a few bits. I already had most things and bought a little extra when Italy’s cases shot up. Preppers are not responsible for panic buying.

FrankieManca · 17/03/2020 19:20

Oh, Wow, ShiftyOwl I want a 'stunt pineapple' now!

OP...thanks to your post it could be be worse tomorrow because even people reading this who have just about enough will get worried and be queuing outside the shops.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/03/2020 19:21

I am buying fresh to use now so I don’t need to touch the cupboard stuff. I haven’t panic bought because I have been quietly stocking up for a long time.
I make soap as a hobby so haven’t bought any. We have some fruit and veg frozen from the garden last year and we will plant a bit extra.
How does that make me scum?

Bookoffacts · 17/03/2020 19:21

You need to arrive as they open in the morning. Look online to see opening times and queue at the door. Then go straight to aisle you need. Walk fast through shop. It sells out in 15 mins.

m00rfarm · 17/03/2020 19:21

We came back from Spain 5 days ago to find my beautifully prepped freezer and fridge full of rotting food as the electricity had cut out. So I have had to replace everything from scratch - expensive and dififcult right now.

MauriceandAlec · 17/03/2020 19:21

So to all preppers are you still shopping?

I'm a prepper, have been for some time, for no deal Brexit, everyone laughed at me and my own wife would raise her eyebrows and roll her eyes. It meant, like Potential, cutting back in personal areas to do so. So right back atcha with your scum comment Hmm.

I make our yoghurt, cream, butter, jam and bread. I dehydrate and preserve and grow some of our food in our garden. I even make our own ice cream, wine and beer (I'm on several home brewer and fermenter sites). All this is a hobby to me, a find it really fun but it's a sensible one, too.

Preppers are not panic buyers.

Maybe in the future you might try it.

speakout · 17/03/2020 19:21

I was in Tesco this morning- things seem to be getting back to normal.
Plenty of most things, toilet roll, even got hand sanitiser.
