So now: no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread....

Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 17/03/2020 18:53

* Ummm, how does one prep months in advance for fresh fruit and veg confused*

You freeze them. People have been doing it in a big way locally with okra, greens. bananas, apples, and pears. Thank goodness berries aren’t in season otherwise they would have all gone

bellinisurge · 17/03/2020 18:54

I'm shopping as normal apart from doing my in laws with ours - they are over 70.
I bought bit by bit, often just an extra tin, over a year.
I'm confident the supermarkets will right themselves once people have calmed the fuck down,

RaininSummer · 17/03/2020 18:54

Preppers will only be buying fresh stuff really as they will have stocks if tins etc so they are not creating the problems.

lynsey91 · 17/03/2020 18:55

The only things I have bought in the last 3 weeks are fresh fruit and veg, a box of teabags (more worried about running out of those than loo roll!) a tub of Lurpack and a dozen eggs.

The eggs I got from one of the many locals who sell them and they had plenty.

I do not regard myself as a prepper. I have had a good stock of tinned foods, frozen foods and things like pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas etc for years. Probably over 20 years.

Me and my husband are sensible people who are always prepared for anything that could stop us getting to a shop such as snow or floods or, as now, shops not having lots of items

zen1 · 17/03/2020 18:55

I was a prepper (Brexit got me started). Never a panic buyer. I am only shopping now for fresh fruit/veg, bread and milk. My ‘prepping’ involved buying one or two extras for weeks and weeks, not 10 packs of something in one go.

bellinisurge · 17/03/2020 18:57

And I freeze, preserve by dehydration or canning, or buy tinned.
It's really boring and methodical to build up a reasonable stash but I did it. I bought a few tins instead of say, new mascara. Again. Slowly. As my budget allowed.
I'm not a panic buyer.

Crunchymum · 17/03/2020 18:57

Actually @OnlyFoolsnMothers you need to be very careful with your terminology. Peppers are the polar opposite of the people you are complaining about!!

Zacharyezrarawlings · 17/03/2020 18:57

"Maybe the government need to make it clear then- even on a lock down there is access to
Supermarkets"
Whereas what Boris has actually said is that if someone in your house has symptoms you all need self isolate for 14 days and that includes not going to the shops or out for essentials.
So you can see why people would want to have extra stuff in.

Potentialmadcatlady · 17/03/2020 18:57

So I am ‘scum’ because I have gone without treats for months so I could gather up some extras to get my family through brexit and now this situ as best I can? I am ‘scum’ because I have bought things on offer and kept the ‘1’ from the 2 for 1 for this?
I am ‘scum’ because I havnt had a dinner or night out in months because I was using every spare penny to make sure I had what I needed for my disabled child? I am ‘scum’ because I listened to the news and had the good sense to realise my family was going to be in trouble when the virus hit our shores?
I am ‘scum’ because I went and did a big shop last week before going into isolation to literally save my child life? I am ‘scum’ because I now don’t have to go panic buy?
Thanks for that OP, just what I needed to hear as I sit stuck in my home with a disabled child who has no chance of doing the exams he has worked hard for. As I sit here not knowing when I will see my elderly father again... thanks a bunch

mumme111 · 17/03/2020 18:57

Crunchymum · 17/03/2020 18:58
  • preppers
ShiftyOwl · 17/03/2020 18:59

My Tesco delivery today had no missing items or substitutes, a sample of my basket:
Mince
Chicken thighs
Salad stuff
Fruit
Stunt pineapple
Veg
Bread
Milk
Eggs

Admittedly I didn’t order loo roll or pasta but I was impressed!

AutumnCrow · 17/03/2020 18:59

'Scum'.

Charming.

Tana433 · 17/03/2020 18:59

@lynsey91. You are definitely a.prepper. Dont be ashamed of the title wear it with pride. It is people like us who will help the country keep running.

Mintjulia · 17/03/2020 18:59

Come out to Hampshire. Our butcher is fully stocked on meat, cheeses, tinned tomatoes, pasta. They don’t keep loo rolls though.

Watermelontea · 17/03/2020 18:59

We got a couple of extra bits each time we shopped last year, to prepare for the whole Brexit debacle, so have a fair amount of tinned and dried foods, and we will go through it when we all go into lockdown - let’s face it, it’s going to happen.
I didn’t panic buy at all, I can’t be doing with that, but I feel pretty prepared to weather a good 3-4 weeks of the peak without having to do much, if any shopping, albeit with relatively boring food.

We’re shopping as normal until that time comes, though that’s getting harder to do, we’re just having to adapt our meals, reduce the pasta/rice/bread/meat elements and make do with what’s out.
We do have a little bit of frozen meat, though that is left over from using it for other meals recently, not bought in advance.

Gronky · 17/03/2020 19:01

There's not currently any interruption to production, nor do any aspects of the disease increase the rate of consumption (of food) so it's not as if this will last terribly long. My experience (Midlands) was just that the choices are rather restricted, other than bread, which was down to a few rolls. Essentially, things took a hit over the weekend and that led to a second wave today but I wouldn't be surprised if it's almost back to normal by Friday.

Frangipanini · 17/03/2020 19:02

I've always had extra in and I am a preppier.

My shop now contains fresh meat, fresh veg, fresh fruit and eggs and possible 1 or 2 items to add to my stores. Today I bought some expensive laundry capsules and loads of wine as it was on offer.

If I wasn't massively over organised and a preppier I too would be adding to the chaos over the past 2 weeks. I'm not.

CeibaTree · 17/03/2020 19:02

We filled our freezer/cupboards weeks ago when the news of the new virus reached these shores. I haven't been to the shops for at least 2 weeks so how has my 'prepping' caused your supermarket's empty shelves may I ask?

TeaAndDarkToast · 17/03/2020 19:02

Yes. Today I finished buying for a couple in their late 80s who have underlying health conditions and are self isolating, also for the foodbank at the church, yesterday I also asked all the my older neighbours in my road if they needed any shopping or errands done.

I phone ahead and leave their shopping goods at their front door pathway. Then reimburse me by online banking. Those who cannot repay me buy putting it in an envelope and putting it through my door.

I am and have been organised. Name calling won't get you anywhere.

BMW6 · 17/03/2020 19:02

I;manother recommending you try local "corner" shops. The one a few mins walk from me had just about everything - including loo rolls and pasta.
Granted no joints or fresh meat, but beggars can't be choosers.

bellinisurge · 17/03/2020 19:02

I went to Tesco to buy a new kettle today - ours broke and my dh had drawn the line at getting a spare electric kettle a few months ago, although we have a whistling kettle for the hob.
Anyway, I was behind a bloke at the till who was getting two or three of everything. Or more . As he passed each set up to the till operator, I said to myself "bought that one by one a few months ago". And often added to the food bank box if that counts.
Which one of us is scum?

bellinisurge · 17/03/2020 19:04

Answer: neither of us. I just planned better.

Frangipanini · 17/03/2020 19:05

Also, I'm now in a position to help others because I am not part of the mania so if you don't mind please F'off with blaming people like me who have actually taken ourselves out of the equation. I've given 10 items of food to the food bank that they are short of. I took a box of them before someone took it all for themselves. How many things have you bought for the food bank?

titchy · 17/03/2020 19:06

My local Waitrose was fully stocked this lunchtime Blush Surrey/SW London borders.
