Just that really. I understand theirs a lot of suggesting going on but will they officially make people stay in or take responsibility?

DitheringDoris people who need to exercise for their mental health will be able to get their endorphins from that, I know that exercise outside is far better but this will not be forever. It’s short term, everybody will have to make sacrifices.

It's not just about exercise. It's about total social isolation. I need to go outside OR see a friend every day or life is unbearable. I fight MH problems daily. I'm willing to make the sacrifice to receive a lethal injection if you'd like? This is not a joke. I really can't go on if I have to be alone for more than the basic 7 day isolation period. Desperately hoping I can lockdown with a friend.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/03/2020 13:48

I've never bought illegal drugs, but that's what I imagine it feels like.

Lol. A friend lent me her car and I gave her some paracetamol and toilet roll. We both said that we felt like we were doing a drug deal, because we were talking so quietly, as I handed them over.

theDudesmummy · 17/03/2020 13:48

The Army head was asked whether troops on the streets would just increase the atmosphere of abnormality and he said something like it is going to be so abnormal anyway, there is no chance of any atmosphere of normality...

feelingverylazytoday · 17/03/2020 13:49

Nope, 10 weeks. That's when the real peak hits. That's their present prediction. Might change of course.

Justmuddlingalong · 17/03/2020 13:51

😄 I scuttled up the road with the sanitiser in my pocket, imagining I'd be mugged for it if it was spotted. Strange times.

ajandjjmum · 17/03/2020 13:52

I thought they said 10-12 weeks last week, with cases soaring 4 weeks either side of the peak.

But yesterday they said that we were accelerating faster than expected - so say 8 - 10 weeks, with London several weeks ahead. If they are going to start strict measures in London, I would think it would have to be within the next week or so.

Rosehip10 · 17/03/2020 13:55

The armed forces have been depleted in recent year. Just how many troops can BoJo put on the streets anyway?

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 14:00

They will call in reservists.

OldLace · 17/03/2020 14:00

Yes.

Yesterday's announcement was to soften us up.
The vagueness was to make it harder to follow consistently.

Then the Govt will do it as it is 'all our fault' for not following advice.
Stupid blame games, instead of giving clear, early instructions.

Havanananana · 17/03/2020 14:01

The Forces will be needed for a number of tasks:

  • Ensuring that supplies continue to get through to shops - as the virus spreads, it will also affect lorry drivers and warehouse workers;
  • Ensuring that these supplies are shared out - if necessary controlling queues at shops and petrol stations, or doing police work such as traffic control in order to release the police for this;
  • Flying in and distributing vital medicines and medical equipment if commercial flights from abroad cease;
  • Providing additional medical and fire-fighting support - required if regular emergency services folk fall ill or demand soars;
  • Providing additional support to the vulnerable - food deliveries etc.
  • Finally - enforcing quarantine orders or curfews
alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 14:01

And special constables.
And maybe even ask for volunteers amongst ex service personnel/police.

My daughter's dance school is staying open

I would hope people would support daughter's dance school., swim lessons, gymnastics club etc etc.

If they are forced to close, how will they pay the staff's wages??!

If it's just £30 a month or so, suck it up and just keep paying it even if you don't have lessons for a month or so, or else you won't have a dance school to go back to!

Seriously. Small businesses. People just don't get it do they.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 14:17

Weeks of marathons, concerts, bars, shops, school open, all functioning as normal. Now the media anticipating a full government uturn and full France style lock down. I think the UK government has communicated abominably with the public and I don’t believe they truly know themselves what they are trying to achieve. As far as I can see they are trying to juggle five balls and dropping every one.

A good point, but if people paying the £30 are also losing their jobs or facing reduced hours, the whole thing collapses.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the government where I live in Europe has already pledged several billions in aid for affected businesses (it would be the equivalent of £40bn in the UK based on population), most of it earmarked for small and one-person businesses rather than for 'big business.' It is about time that the UK government realised that the majority of private-sector employees in the UK work for the hundreds of thousands of SME businesses, all of whom are under imminent threat.

Has anything been put in place money wise if the country goes into lockdown and my DH for example can’t work? I am frontline nhs staff but only part time so DH makes a lot more money than I do and I can’t afford all our bills and rent myself. Secondly if the schools close before lockdown is announced how do I work? Valuable nhs staff member having to stay at home for an undetermined amount of time?

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/03/2020 14:39

I think the Downing st announcement today is dealing with finance, but could be wrong

OrangeSamphire · 17/03/2020 14:52

I’ve just been to our local grocery wholesaler to pick up fresh veg. It’s a mini warehouse / barn full of local produce. It’s spacious, there’s no need to be within a metre or two of other shoppers. And YET, there were over-70s reaching all over each other to get to things, barging past people and getting all up in each other’s faces. For no reason.

My son is extremely vulnerable health wise and severely disabled. I took a risk going alone to get supplies (we can’t get a home delivery slot) knowing I would be exposing myself to others, but taking precautions. Sanitised the trolley handle with medical wipes, tried to stay away from others, paid using Apple Pay etc.

And yet these selfish pricks just don’t care about others. Obviously.

I asked several times for others to move back / stay a metre away. I got some very unpleasant responses. So sad.

Luckily, the wholesaler has offered to deliver to our home from now on. Because they know we have a vulnerable household member and are trying to isolate. Some people are just wonderful, in amongst all the selfish, ignorant pigs.

leafygarden · 17/03/2020 14:59

@BiarritzCrackers no - not an independent

a local comprehensive - shut due to staff going into isolation

combatbarbie · 17/03/2020 15:50

I actually think a lock down won't work, we don't have respect for our government or police..... Most people can't afford the £1000 anticipated fine and our jails are full....

beebyjeeby · 17/03/2020 16:50

i'm starting to think the soft method of making everyone think they should isolate is much better than forcing it because we can't enforce.

BretonKitten · 17/03/2020 16:52

Yes, in a week, maybe two

Havanananana · 17/03/2020 16:52

What do you think will be needed before the population grasps the seriousness of the situation? Hundreds of deaths? Civil unrest? Looting?

As others have commented, things developed very quickly in the various European countries that have gone into voluntary or compulsory lock-down. Nobody has defied the measures - where I am, 95% of school pupils remained at home yesterday; there are special arrangements in place for the 5% that cannot stay at home, e.g. because their parent is a key worker. Passenger numbers on public transport are down by 80%. The streets are empty except for people out buying food and the shops are limiting the number of people entering at any time. The politicians are communicating regularly - and giving a clear and concise message. Volunteers are setting up services for the vulnerable in order to take the strain off the police and other services. I read and hear about similar initiatives from other countries.

Are these other countries more obedient than the British? Is there really less social cohesion in the UK? Are the loud and stupid being allowed to dominate the media, drowning out the sensible, pragmatic and more restrained people?

combatbarbie · 17/03/2020 16:57

Have you ever come across the guards/police in europe....they don't take any shit from anyone....thats why it's effective.

beebyjeeby · 17/03/2020 16:58

some Parisians were not taking it seriously yesterday

rabbitsnose · 17/03/2020 17:02

We'll have the army come in, with guns. I'm sure people will take notice if that.
