Just that really. I understand theirs a lot of suggesting going on but will they officially make people stay in or take responsibility?

Yes, I think it will come to a point where we don't have a choice.

Current advice is far too unclear for it to be effective. The only way some people will pay attention is when they're given no choice. Sad, but we clearly can't be trusted to be sensible Hmm

BiarritzCrackers · 17/03/2020 11:04

I don't mean this to sound pissy, but I don't understand why the wheels will come off the UK economy more significantly than for every other country in Europe who are taking these measures? (with the exception of Sweden, apparently, who are being like us in this).

FoxBaseBeta · 17/03/2020 11:06

My local softplay have said they're staying open and I've just seen someone comment "yay, if the schools close I'll virtually be living there". ConfusedConfused

Nquartz · 17/03/2020 11:09

@BiarritzCrackers me neither! Maybe because one country (Germany I think) have pledged over €500 billion to support small businesses/free lancers etc during this time.

What is Boris giving us? 🖕🏼

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 17/03/2020 11:10

I think we will, and the announcement yesterday was just to mentally soften people up. Get us used to the idea that it's going to happen, and then pretty shortly after announce what the enforcement measures will be.

adaline · 17/03/2020 11:10

@BiarritzCrackers because the UK is special, dontcha know Wink

thebigthreefive · 17/03/2020 11:12

@smellycatwee people have already travelled from the SE to their holiday homes. I saw some second home owners making a joke of it in the local shop.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 11:12

I think there should be a lockdown, but everything the government has been saying the last few weeks suggests the opposite. It would signal a massive, massive U-turn.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 11:13

The problem is businesses cant close as their insurance doesnt cover corona. I think if/when the government helps they`ll be able to shut (and probably breathe a sigh of relief). Feel for the workers everywhere affected.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 11:15

thebig3five it`ll be riddled there then! there was another thread last night about 2nd homers from london wanting to flee to norfolk!

thanks peeps.....sharings not caring to us!

Poppydaisies · 17/03/2020 11:16

The people locally who have taken their kids out of school are taking them to parks, to soft play, the cinema.

No way Shock. What terrible and selfish behaviour. I do think the Government needs to enforce a lockdown in that case!!

I'm hoping that schools close very soon so that we can a. Isolate ourselves as much as possible!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/03/2020 11:16

Most of the people I know are isolating if they can.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 11:17

My concern with the UK strategy are twofold:

  1. Even if it succeeds the UK will likely be facing 100,000+ deaths
It isn’t “only” a serious threat to the, say, over 65s. Even just a 0.1 mortality rate from 55 million infections of those under 65 equates to 55,000 deaths. And how many of those over 65 will be unsuccessful in totally isolating for 4+months from the literal plague of virus outside their doors? Perhaps at least 10% will not succeed, which would equate to another 100,000 deaths.

  2. Very few outside the UK consider it a viable strategy
Great economic harm is a given. Deaths are inevitable, but others are looking to restrict to perhaps the low thousands, rather than take a gamble which could see them spiral into six figures.

I cannot but feel the UK’s strategy is far too big of a risk - it’s a gamble. The science isn’t there. The statistics re.infections and from testing aren’t there. The NHS capacity isn’t there to deal with hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations over a year period. You don’t gamble with this kind of thing. At a much later date perhaps we will have no choice but to succumb to a final destination of staggered infections and eventual herd immunity, but for now surely the key is test, test, test (not doing) and isolate (not doing).

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/03/2020 11:19

We need to, and I hope it happens today to be honest. I live in a small town and everyone seems to be carrying on as normal.

We need to shut down now before it's too late.

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/03/2020 11:20

We need to as well because at the moment I am STILL hearing people say all this is an overreaction so far and places shouldn't be closing, and that people are using it as an excuse to get out of work.

We need to government to take control and place a lockdown measure.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 11:21

@Cam77

100,000+ deaths?

Where do you get that from?

China, has only had 3.5 thousand and the spread is slowing there.

whatsthatnow74 · 17/03/2020 11:21

I just spoke to my mum who lives in a retirement complex. She said most of the over-70s who live there are going about their business as normal this morning, out and about. It's the height of ignorance and/or stupidity.

MorganKitten · 17/03/2020 11:21

The govt has advised to work from home and yet offices are still full - why?

Not everyone can work from home, I can’t so have to go in. If I didn’t I’d have 50 sets of parents complaining there’s no one to look after their children...

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 11:22

@covetingthepreciousthings

It is too late.

adaline · 17/03/2020 11:23

China, has only had 3.5 thousand and the spread is slowing there.

But China put extreme measures in place from the get-go. The UK has decided not to do that - schools and workplaces are still open, there's no real restriction on travel or anything.

We're not doing enough.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 11:23

@whatsthatnow74

My eighty year old mother is coming for tea tonight. Not going to bar the door

RhubarbTea · 17/03/2020 11:23

Yes.
I think they are deliberately making it a gradual process so it won't be a shock and lead to people kicking off, but they are making their way towards that eventuality in the least scary/disruptive way possible.

Like trying to catch a cat to put in the cat carrier when you need to take it to the vet. The British public is the cat.

Barracker · 17/03/2020 11:24

Yes.

Sooner rather than later.

Jaxhog · 17/03/2020 11:25

Yes, because some people seem unable to grasp the guidance and are doing everything in their power to try to justify them not following it. So because of these people, we will all be put in lockdown.

And because of these people, people like me may die. But, hey ho, as long as their social life isn't disturbed, that's ok.

MrsMGE · 17/03/2020 11:25

Yes, because some people are still too relaxed about the guidance and do not follow it.
