Just that really. I understand theirs a lot of suggesting going on but will they officially make people stay in or take responsibility?

*I saw my mother three days ago. If either of us has the virus, the other almost certainly already does.

It's too late.

This will pass. There is actually little we can do about it. That's hard for modern people to accept. Might also explain some of the generational divide* 🧐

The point is to slow it down, not try in vain to stop it completely. There's a difference.

TwelveIslands · 17/03/2020 12:05

I live on a bus route. Every bus that goes past has a dozen or more older people on it.

rabbitsnose · 17/03/2020 12:06

Bing sounds like the type of person that will ensure we all go into lockdown.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 12:06

@kopbop
Thats true. So go out for short period only. Avoid touching your face - surprisingly not that hard to do I find when you set your mind to it (possibly wear gloves). Wash your hands the moment you come back home or take disninfectant wipes with you.

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 12:08

I imagine myself as the Terminator and keep my arms right down straight by my sides for the duration of a shop.

blackswan88 · 17/03/2020 12:09

It will need to. Just saw someone posting their toddler group is still on tomorrow! I get the schools are still on, albeit half empty, but it's hardly necessary social interaction a big group of parents and kids. I though everyone would listen now but it appears not.

cologne4711 · 17/03/2020 12:10

The people who are moaning that their mental health will suffer if they don’t have their daily bloody run

It's also about physical health. If all we do is sit at home, watching boxsets and eating chocolate we won't get COVID 19 but we'll all be 3 stone heavier by the end of this and have other problems instead. There has to be some sort of balance but I suspect we will have a France-style lock down by Easter, if not before.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 12:11

@rabbitsnose

You looking forward to it?

Seriously, the name calling and sheer ignorance is incredible.

The scaremongering with hundreds of thousands of deaths is stupid too.

We probably won't go into lock down because we can't afford it.

cologne4711 · 17/03/2020 12:15

The people locally who have taken their kids out of school are taking them to parks, to soft play, the cinema

Can't see what the problem with the park is.

Soft play is a germ pit at the best of times, and I wouldn't go to the cinema at the moment. I was meant to be going to a concert tonight and it has been cancelled very reluctantly by the act (who aren't British, so it's not another example of "it won't get us in the UK").

rabbitsnose · 17/03/2020 12:16

Who's name-calling? I haven't?

I see you've called me ignorant though Wink

thelittlefox · 17/03/2020 12:16

We should have been in lockdown weeks ago. The longer we leave it and "normal life" goes on, more people are infected and more people die.

I'm more than willing to do several months effective house arrest if it means my vulnerable relatives have a better chance of making it. We all need to make sacrifices.

rabbitsnose · 17/03/2020 12:18

I never thought for a second that I would miss soft play, but here I am!

Parks are fine I think, cinema is a no-no and soft play should be avoided. It's not hard for people to understand is it? Apparently so though

FizzyLimes · 17/03/2020 12:20

In France. Yes the UK will be going into lockdown.
This time 5 days ago, we were chatting in the mum’s FB group about potentially closing the schools.
By 8pm on that night ( Thursday) it was announced.
Saturday, I was thinking about running some errands; thought, oh that will wait till Monday. Saturday night, all shops closure announced.
Yesterday (Monday) at 8pm, they announced curfew which started at noon today. You need a self certified paper to travel.

kopbop · 17/03/2020 12:25

I've just walked down my local high street and all the cafes/pubs etc are open, seems like a perfectly normal day down there.

blackswan88 · 17/03/2020 12:25

@FizzyLimes how do people get supplies with the shops closed?

PhoneTwattery · 17/03/2020 12:26

@cologne4711

The people who are moaning that their mental health will suffer if they don’t have their daily bloody run

Incredibly valid for people who make a real effort to fight MH issues or are alcoholics in recovery.

jasjas1973 · 17/03/2020 12:27

The UK won't.
Business/economy is being prioritised and to be honest, its too late, the disease is probably endemic in the community, not that we'll ever know because no one is being tested.

We can't even run a fuckin mobile phone network in crisis, let alone organise a lockdown.

FizzyLimes · 17/03/2020 12:27

@blackswan88
Supermarkets, pharmacies, tabac and petrol stations open. But you need a self certificate

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 17/03/2020 12:28

I live in the centre of a small town. It’s normally quite a quiet place. Today it’s packed with shoppers, at a guess I’d say 70% are elderly. The pubs are still busy going off the noise at closing time.
Me and my youngest DD are self isolating because my eldest DD is immuno compromised, her and her boyfriend are really scared, she’s been hospitalised with infections twice this winter already. I’m terrified for her.

BlindAssassin1 · 17/03/2020 12:30

Parks are fine I think,

Don't think so. CV lives on surfaces for hours if not a day or more depending on the material. Metal and plastic have been tested. It can stay in the air as well, hence the thing about staying a good meter plus away from others.

Angryrant55 · 17/03/2020 12:30

Yes but by then 10k will probally either be dead or unsavable.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 12:30

Exactly @jasjas

Nothing to do now but grin and bear it.

We're literally in the hands of the Gods

Havanananana · 17/03/2020 12:30

our local supermarket in Italy has erected screens between checkout staff and customers

I am also in a European country and in voluntary lock-down at the moment. That means only going out for essential things like food and medicine. People can only walk alone or with one other person, who may only be someone they live with.

Only shops, banks and chemists are open, with screens as described, or with a step-up/step-back procedure (you put the goods and money (or preferably card) on the counter and step back, the assistant steps forward and scans and takes payment and steps back, you step up and take goods and the change). Buses are running to a reduced timetable and people are asked to only make essential journeys. There is no interaction with the driver - the first two rows are cordoned off and you enter and leave through the middle door of the bus. There are no busses in service that only have a front door. Tickets must be bought online or at ticket machines.

For people who cannot get out there is a volunteer service that is being co-ordinated by the local council. Many young people have signed up as volunteers. People are able to order food and medicine and have them delivered by the volunteers without there being any physical interaction. The community response here (and in another European country where I have relatives) has been amazing. There has been little panic-buying, people are behaving as requested without the need for compulsory orders. Schools have organised remote teaching (skype, emails etc) and laptops have been found for families that didn't have them. The government has already announced €billions in support of all businesses (it would equate to £40bn of aid in the UK - hello Boris and Sunak!)

NanSlayer · 17/03/2020 12:32

Yes, because idiots do idiot things because they're idiots.

Butterymuffin · 17/03/2020 12:40

I saw my mother three days ago. If either of us has the virus, the other almost certainly already does. It's too late.

That's your lookout, but it's not just about you. By limiting going out you and she could stop other people catching it, but you clearly don't give a shit about others.
