I just dont get how anyone can be against vaccines after this ( unless you think it was created on purpose by the powers that be in order to make money or control humanity through fear.)

I guess 'antivaxxers' are a large heterogenous group with a variety of individual biases, beliefs and experiences, so it's hard to generalise.

I imagine there when a vaccine for this coronavirus becomes available large-scale in the general population there will be a mixture of both relief, and also understandable concern from some about using a relatively new vaccine without long-term data.

Immunisation is a the sole reason that most of us are here on the planet and I am very disturbed by the antivaxx movement. I'm pretty sure the issue won't be solved by anything other than seeking to understand why some people are moved to reject the scientific evidence, and engage in some compassionate communication...

Luckystar777 · 17/03/2020 15:25

@Henrysmycat yawn, the old foil hat line, heard it all before :)

Unless you see in the labs where they're made, how do you know exactly what's in them? How do you know if it's harmful or not? What's wrong with listening to the growing number of people on Twitter who say they/their families have been harmed by vaccines? Why hide from truth?

Have you ever seen a little child screaming its' head off when it gets jabbed? It looks very painful these days, they end up in tears. Health'care'. smh.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 15:34

I do not care what an anti vaccination person thinks about Covid. If they refuse a vaccine if/when it is developed, that is their choice to do.
Darwin’s survival of the fittest has become survival of the smartest in this day and age. I can live with people dying through their own stupid choices.

todayisnottuesday · 17/03/2020 15:42

@luckystar777

there are even nurses who refuse to give them

Where? If it is part of their job role, they do not get to decide whether to give them - they work on the current evidence, which overwhelmingly points towards widespread vaccination as the best policy to protect people against certain diseases.

Seriously? Yes, they sometimes cry for about 5 seconds then they're smiling and giggling again. Children are more than resilient enough to deal with a scratch to the arm or leg that is over in seconds.

Have you ever seen a child dying/ struggling to breathe due to an illness that could have been prevented?

Glowcat · 17/03/2020 15:47

Have you ever seen someone with Polio? No? Me neither.

Vaccines save lives.

AngelicInnocent · 17/03/2020 17:51

@PlanDeRaccordement whilst I don't disagree with the sentiment entirely, it's a bit harsh on those who can't vaccinate for genuine reasons.

todayisnottuesday · 17/03/2020 18:11

t's a bit harsh on those who can't vaccinate for genuine reasons

But they don't come under the 'anti vaxxer' label used in the title, so any comments are clearly not aimed at them.

Ihaveanokamountoftoiletpaper · 17/03/2020 20:56

My mum is an anti vaxxer. I had to get my titers checked as an adult and vaccinated. She believes vaccines cause illness and dementia, and it is all about government control. When she realised I was vaccinating my children she lectured me on the dangers and still continually sends me 'articles' on what it's doing to my children along with natural remedies.

She uses anecdotal evidence like 'we all had whooping cough as babies and are ok'. Well yes mum because you never got a chance to meet the babies that died did you?!

She is otherwise a lovely person, educated too with a degree. But the anti vaxxer stuff drives me fucking batshit. Social media and the internet is dangerous for people like her that are looking for information from quacks to confirm what they think they know.

Ihaveanokamountoftoiletpaper · 17/03/2020 21:02

And for people like luckystar too apparently. It is better to have a world where a small number have a bad effect from a vaccine but the majority are protected. Than a world where the majority are infected and die.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 21:06

Angelic, my sentIment was directed only at who I said, the anti vaccination people. People who cannot vaccinate for medical reasons are not anti vaccination people. The vast majority of people who cannot vaccinate are pro vaccination because their health depends on herd immunity created by everyone who can vaccinate getting their vaccines.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 21:08

Glowcat,
Absolutely right, vaccines save lives and they also improve quality if life because many illnesses cause lifelong healh conditions

You mentioned polio and that is a great example. My uncle had polio as a child and has always walked with a limp because of it. He also has heart failure now due to the long term effects of having had polio.

lamppostdog · 17/03/2020 21:11

My uncle died of polio in the pre vax days, my gran never got over it, he was 18 months old and suffered horribly. Anti vaxxers are dangerous f*ckwits

Ginfordinner · 17/03/2020 23:05

Have you ever seen someone with Polio? No? Me neither

I have. I am old enough to remember seeing children in leg irons as a result of contracting polio.

If vaccinating people was so dangerous, why is the entire medical profession pro vaccination? Have the anti vaxxers even read any peer reviewed scientific articles with statistics about vaccination?

There is no drug or vaccine that is completely side effect free, but the advantages of vaccinating the vast majority of people far outweigh the disadvantages. That is a fact, not hearsay.

Twasbambam · 17/03/2020 23:20

Have you ever seen a little child screaming its' head off when it gets jabbed? It looks very painful these days, they end up in tears.

My dd cried, was fine seconds later as soon as I pulled the bag of chocolates out.

My ds just looked at the nurse doing the jabs, stared at her silently. Freaked her right out 😁

Cattenberg · 18/03/2020 07:53

I’m still haunted by a video shown on Comic Relief several years ago, showing a Ugandan boy who was critically ill with tetanus. He hadn’t had the opportunity to be vaccinated. It’s a horrendous disease and it occurs all around the world, although it’s thankfully rare in the UK due to vaccination.

DIYBother · 18/03/2020 08:07

Have you ever seen photos of children with smallpox? www.google.co.uk/search?q=child+with+smallpox&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=inv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjM1OCcx6PoAhXRVsAKHbTlAcMQ_AUoAXoECA0QAQ&biw=414&bih=703&dpr=2#imgrc=kK0fifoo49WX2M

Smallpox was eradicated in 1980 because of vaccination efforts by the WHO.

30% of everyone who caught smallpox died. Those who survived were likely to be left scarred and blind.

As for deaths caused by the vaccine, the rate of death was 0.000198%. That’s 1-2 people out of every million (as opposed to 300,000 per million killed by smallpox).

That’s like having one bowl of 100 skittles in which 30 are poisoned, and one bowl of 100 skittles in which a tiny molecule of one skittle is poisoned. Which bowl are you going to let your kid grab a handful from?

Ginfordinner · 18/03/2020 08:43

Anti vaxxers don't understand statistics. They just sit there with their fingers in their ears singing la la la, and think that vaccination programmes are a conspiracy theory.

NemophilistRebel · 18/03/2020 08:45

Half of them beleive it’s made up to push a new vaccine and control agenda

The other half believe they are invincible to it because they have far better immunity out there than someone who has had vaccinations

These lot also believe that any one who does get it can fix themselves with super high doses of vitamin c every day and garlic and hot water

NemophilistRebel · 18/03/2020 08:47

I was in the presence of an anti vaxxer the other day and they actually said to me that they don’t know anyone who’s got this so they think the media is making it all up

As if you have to know someone suffering and in hospital for it to be real Hmm

Taddda · 18/03/2020 08:50

Slightly off the topic, but my 1 year old is due her MMR. My Gps now closed so how are they going to keep babies up with their imms? Are they going to roll out special 'baby clinics'??

NemophilistRebel · 18/03/2020 08:51

To the anti vaxxers who are saying wake up -

Well open your own eyes up. This is worldwide. You really think every medical professional is in on this?

You really think every government is in on this?
Happily spending billions of money keeping closed companies going and people employed when not working.

What a ducking joke and it’s insulting

NemophilistRebel · 18/03/2020 08:51

@Taddda I was wondering the same

Dc is due his next one.
I guess it can wait a little while?

Taddda · 18/03/2020 08:57

@NemophilistRebel I think it's okay to wait a little while also- Dd1 has had hers, I've pulled out of Nursery for now - but still I'd like to know what the plan is??

rosiehew · 23/03/2020 19:02

Hi there,

I myself don't yet have children but I do hope to one day and I'm not really informed enough to know what my position on vaccination would be.

I found this thread because I'm a freelance journalist working on an article for VICE online, about whether the coronavirus pandemic has changed people's attitudes towards vaccinations. Are there any parents out here that would be willing to chat to me about this?

It will be for a sensitive, balanced article examining the effects of the pandemic on various people's choices as parents. Please do get in touch if you'd like to chat as I'd love to hear a range of views!

Best wishes,

Rosie
