Think would be good to keep this thread going! Will link to the previous threads in a bit.

I've just read one of the other threads about people still going out. The sheer vitriol from some people is astounding, even towards folk who still have to go to work. It's one of the reasons that, regretfully, once this is all over I will be coming off MN for good. I'll stick with this thread because it's a godsend, but as for the rest.....

Orangeblossom78 · 19/03/2020 19:11

I know. I mean done sensibly, washing hands and staying apart from others, makes such a difference rather than the 'staying in' as such

Spudlet · 19/03/2020 19:17

There needs to be a balance. Obviously it goes without saying that we have to do what we can to deal with this virus, and especially to protect the vulnerable. But we also need to safeguard everyone’s physical and mental health. It is not sustainable for everyone to stay in the whole time, especially not for an extended period - people will break down!

IMO (and I am not an expert, but I think I am relatively sensible) it is ok for people to go out for exercise and fresh air so long as everyone observes good hygiene measures and stays away from each other. So no meeting up for a parkrun or with the ramblers, but a solo walk or run is ok. Touch as few things as you can and avoid touching your face, and wash your hands as soon as you get in.

If we’re going to be in this for the long haul we have to approach it like a marathon and not a sprint. We need to take care of our general health and well-being at the same time as trying to control this virus.

gingerbreadslice · 19/03/2020 19:19

Has anyone planned anything for when this is over? I feel a bit silly but I'd like to defo plan my wedding with my partner and maybe get my children christened as I would like that I'm not sure what else? Atm I've been busy decorating the house ive been meaning to do for the last five years Shock

Spudlet · 19/03/2020 19:26

I’ve entered a 10k in July! Perhaps somewhat optimistic of me, but hey, positive mental attitude and all that. I also have a half-marathon in October - feel slightly more confident about that one (well, it going ahead anyway, not running it).

We just remortgaged so we could build a porch - hoping that we won’t need to use that money to stay afloat 😬 If we don’t, we will get some home improvements done, I hope.

We also want to plant some hazel in the garden as we can harvest it for stakes and firewood.

Alsohuman · 19/03/2020 19:31

Now I have a whiskey in hand and a chicken in the oven

You’ve got a chicken? I couldn’t get one for love or money today. Deeply envious!

StCharlotte · 19/03/2020 19:32

I know this is meant to be a happy thread but a cat just ignored me in the street and I need to sulk about it....

Well you'd obviously done something to offend her.

@andratuttobene - I do know what you mean, although my reaction to the briefings is somewhat skewed by the fact that DH watches and then gives me edited highlights. I'm too good at reading the side headlines and catastrophising.

moita · 19/03/2020 19:49

@gingerbreadslice It's keeping me going: planning for the future. I definitely am going to change careers.

AutumnRose1 · 19/03/2020 20:03

moita do you mind if I ask what careers you’re thinking of?

I was dithering about learning piano before, I must do that because I need a really all engrossing hobby.

Callybrid · 19/03/2020 20:05

@moita sorry if you’ve mentioned it already - what’s your planned career change?

I was an accountant, but been (accidental) sahm for seven years now. I am still trying to work out what my next step is!

Callybrid · 19/03/2020 20:12

@gingerbreadslice wedding planning sounds great... what are you thinking about so far?

I find I start the day optimistic and plummet towards the end of the day at the moment. Especially tired today as well so feeling doubly
emotional. Trying to just stick to a one day at a time approach and just think about tomorrow.

My highlights today were seeing a butterfly in the garden and making some really good almond shortbread Smile

Millie2013 · 19/03/2020 20:33

There’s some proper bstshit on the other threads 😳

Highlights of today:
I had a giggle when I realise I’d stopped approx 2 cars’ distance from the car in front at traffic lights. I’m obviously taking this social distancing a bit far Grin

Sounds like my cousin has had CV. He isolated himself as he felt ill last week, had all the symptoms. GP (via telephone consultation) confirmed it probably was CV. Anyhow, the good news was that he’s on the mend and it was nowhere near as bad as he feared CV might be, which is why it didn’t really cross his mind
Thankfully he’d self isolated by default

HonestlyItsFine · 19/03/2020 20:43

I'm currently watching Mr. Bean on Netflix- just the kind of stupid mindless ting to watch to distract me! Felt a lot calmer today.

HonestlyItsFine · 19/03/2020 20:44

Millie2013 great news about your cousin! It's so good to hear about the "mild" cases.

DaffodilThatch · 19/03/2020 20:48

Had a bit of a wobble today, partly around food availability but also not knowing when I'll see my parents next (they're in Ireland). I'm very thankful for facetime!

Anyway, feeling a bit better this evening after we got a note through the door from a neighbour offering help to those self-isolating. Restored my faith in humanity (for this evening anyway!).

OP posts:
M0reGinPlease · 19/03/2020 20:50

I've deleted all my social media due to the sheer amount of bollocks being shared so I've had to go back to... Candy Crush

HonestlyItsFine · 19/03/2020 20:53

M0reGinPlease I'm on an embarrassingly high Candy Crush level (I'd have to check my phone to see exactly which level!) and find it really good for distraction.

StCharlotte · 19/03/2020 20:53

Just had to laugh at lovely MIL (88) who is obviously self-isolating but told her friend off for being scared Grin

M0reGinPlease · 19/03/2020 20:55

@HonestlyItsFine I also used to be 'high level' as it was my activity of choice when breastfeeding DD but I've gone back to the start 😂

@DaffodilThatch I'm also slightly worried about food, but feel that's a tangible thing that can be fixed and I'm hoping will all the changes and restrictions that have come in over the last few days we'll start seeing a bit more in the shops next week.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/03/2020 21:05

I am still relying on the fact that there is a limit to the amount of food and bogroll and such that most houses will hold, and the people stockpiling will eventually have stockpiled and have to stop for lack of space and money.

I have to eat until 1st June at the earliest, and while I could manage to (because I come of a family which always had a couple of months'worth of food in the house one way and another, not because I have made any special effort) it would be fairly dull food by the end of that time.

One good thing: I would definitely run out of chocolate, and probably lose weight. I have two 100g bars, and that's the lot. Now that I have thought of them, I am likely either to eat them by the end of tomorrow or keep them until I know I will be able to get some more!

DaffodilThatch · 19/03/2020 21:08

Thanks @M0reGinPlease I'm sure you're right. It's frustrating when one of the things my DD and I love to do together is bake. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get flour/ sugar if I use up what we have. DH accidentally bought granulated sugar the other week, not sure if we can bake with that?!

I used to have a candy crush addiction, years ago now. May I also recommend Threes which is also super addictive but I find much less irritating!

OP posts:
peachsquish · 19/03/2020 21:11

Can definitely bake with granulated sugar.

DaffodilThatch · 19/03/2020 21:11

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I'm genuinely terrified of running out of chocolate!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 19/03/2020 21:11

I've used granulated sugar in cakes before now and it was fine, might as well give it a go!
