So that's effectively everyone who works in a pub, club, theatre or restaurant out of work for at least 12 weeks?

Is it? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Most of those won't be paid if they don't work and there won't be any customers.

Unless I missed it there was nothing said about them or what support there will be for them

Lots of jobs in deliveries will be going.

WTFdidwedo · 16/03/2020 18:19

I work for a large restaurant chain and we haven't been instructed yet. We've had one of our busiest weekends of the year as well so clearly noone cares still.

CappyCapCap · 16/03/2020 18:19

It's really shocking. The government will not take responsibility for making the decision themseleves.

They will put off and put off making this decision. Placing all the blame of lay offs etc on business owners, instead.

Wtf people were complaining he wasn’t doing enough like the other countries. Now he’s doing what a lot of other countries are doing, he’s still wrong? Really???

In other countries as far as I'm aware the closures were government enforced. This hasn't been advised, this is basically leaving it up to the general public to decide to not meet socially in these types of places. There's a difference.

WTFdidwedo · 16/03/2020 18:22

But he's not doing what other countries are doing. He's not closing places, he's suggesting people avoid them so restaurants will stay open but lose massive sales.

sixeightfour · 16/03/2020 18:22

I'm a cleaner. I work for an agency who find me customers.

They don't care, as they've asked me if I'm going to my client tomorrow. I need the money as I'm self employed. If my client has it or I have it then we are just spreading it.

DoubleAction · 16/03/2020 18:23

I'm not complaining about the advice Alwaysready just disappointed that there was no acknowledgement of the implications or plan to support people

morningcuppatea · 16/03/2020 18:23

It feels like they don't want to tell us to close as then they would have to compensate us somehow.

We're in limbo, a small village pub, we possibly can weather this but we have 2 staff members who rely on their wages. Looking at take away options but it's scary!

willowpatterns · 16/03/2020 18:25

Yes, My dd is currently on shift at the moment, I don't yet know what's going to happen to her job. Presumably they will let her know asap so she might know by the time she gets home later.

I work in an essential supply chain industry and can't work from home, so I will talk to them tomorrow to find out whether they still want me to go in. DH will have to stop working (he has a face-to-face job) as he has a underlying health condition.

Summercat · 16/03/2020 18:26

YEP, I feel very sorry for people working in the gig economy, who will struggle to make £50 to £100 a month over the next few months. Sad

This is all REEEEEAAALLY bad. Sad

Alialialiali · 16/03/2020 18:29

People are losing jobs. I know a few did today

hatgirl · 16/03/2020 18:39

There's going to be lots of hands on deck needed in the care industry over the next few months. New care workers will be needed to replace the ones off sick. The more care workers available the fewer vulnerable people per care worker there is reducing the risk from one contagious care worker to fewer people.

Similarly delivery drivers of all kinds.

The jobs will be there for people who want them.

Perhaps it's time for a new 'national service' where those who want to work but can't due to the lockdowns can be temporarily employed by the government for the public good.

Ellie56 · 16/03/2020 18:42

Well our local is obviously not planning on closing any time soon...
Just received an email -

We'd like to take this opportunity to reassure you, our loyal guests, of the steps we're taking in relation to any further spread of the COVID-19 virus, and how this may affect you when visiting us^

We have been following the expert advice laid out by the government and Public Health England on how businesses should prepare, react and operate in relation to any further spread of the virus. This advice includes continuing to promote excellent cleaning and hygiene practices across all aspects of our business. We have always had robust cleaning measures in place and we will be continuing to follow these meticulous procedures to ensure our high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained.

We are frequently reminding our team members of the expert advice and information provided by the NHS and Public Health England on the COVID–19 virus. This includes continuing to promote good hygiene across all aspects of daily working practices and for them to be aware of what steps they should take if they believe they're experiencing any symptoms. Out of respect for our teams and fellow guests, we ask everyone to follow the same advice.

It goes without saying we're taking this extremely seriously and that yours' and our teams' safety is our highest priority and we are doing everything we can to ensure you can confidently visit us.

We want to thank you all for your continued support and assure you we remain open for business as usual and that we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Hmm
MauriceandAlec · 16/03/2020 18:46

The jobs will be there for people who want them.

And who have the skills that suit them, of course.

midwestspring · 16/03/2020 18:50

They tried to soft close bars and restaurants in my part of the USA, it didn't work, so they have been told to move to takeaways from today.
These businesses need to shut one way or another.
But there should be consideration given for supporting people.

hatgirl · 16/03/2020 18:56

MauriceandAlec I think at this point it won't matter what people's skills are.

If you can drive a car you can make deliveries.

If you can reheat a microwave meal and help someone get dressed you can do basic care visits leaving the people who are skilled carers free to do the hoisting/skilled care.

Younger people who have had it mildly and recovered will become particularly valuable.

Canitreallybehappening20 · 16/03/2020 18:59

"Younger people who have had it mildly and recovered will become particularly valuable."

But they won't know because they won't be tested for it. Ho hum.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2020 19:01

If the government says they were to close, most would be able to claim on their insurance. As it's just a directive, it's effectively putting them all out of business.

dementedpixie · 16/03/2020 19:01

The WHO says everyone with symptoms should be tested. If they did that and it was negative would that not negate the need for 14 days exclusion?

idontlike789 · 16/03/2020 19:04

This weekend is Mother's Day so usually restaurants fully booked . I wonder how many will cancel ?

BeetrootRocks · 16/03/2020 19:05

Yeah it's Bollocks

riotlady · 16/03/2020 19:05

My partner works on a chain restaurant and head office have told them to close early tonight if they’re not making money. Partner says they’ve been quiet all day and will probably close early tonight- I see them closing up fully within about a week tbh.

IcedPurple · 16/03/2020 19:06

Many restaurants - even those which seem to do well - are only just getting by to begin with. This will be the last straw for them. Many businesses will not survive.

BeetrootRocks · 16/03/2020 19:06

Weak, either shut things or don't. Oh it's up to you??? Wtf.

Agree it's about big business as usual

Awful
