To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

I'm not going for the time being. Don't trust other people enough to clean up after themselves! Plus the machines are in fairly close vicinity at my gym so harder to avoid coughs and sneezes if people don't catch them in time. Will attempt to run and I have a kettlebell at home haha. I work with the elderly so am trying to follow the social distancing as much as I can.

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 07:30

@emilybrontescorsett - I didn't vote for the bastard government. More fool those that did. And a lot of people who voted for them are going to realise what a mistake it was.

MaggieAndHopey · 17/03/2020 07:32

Up until last night I was thinking the same thing - I'm in Scotland, semi-rural area, my gym is small, very clean and externally ventilated and have been proactive with extra hygiene measures too. But even though it appears to be staying open for now, I can't in all conscience keep going.

I'm a powerlifter so it's not straightforward for me to exercise at home, though I will be able to retain some strength with bodyweight and kettlebell exercises. However there are more important things to consider at the moment and I would feel awful if I made anyone ill by continuing to ignore official advice.

allaboardthesinkingship · 17/03/2020 07:33

My husbands freaking out and won't be going and advising me not to go. We've cancelled our membership from next month as well

Amanduh · 17/03/2020 07:35

Yabu. You have been asked to stop all non essential social contact and attedance of public places. The ‘oh but the schools are open’ argument is pointless, it is because we want to LIMIT the spread gradually.
People don’t listen, and this how it spreads and kills. It won’t work because people are so selfish and don’t do as they are asked.
Absolutely pig ignorant.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:35

Yep but I have zero sympathy.
I have been told I have to go to work, I’m not well at the moment, not covid 19 but something else.
Yet if I stay off work my colleagues will suffer and so will the public.
I’m just sick of all the selfish people surprised that there are other selfish people.
They are behaving the way you did.
Disclaimer; not everyone did. Not those who voted for this bloody government gave no right to complain when they cannot are a doctor or there is nobody to card for their sick relatives.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/03/2020 07:48

The selfishness of a sizeable minority and the whataboutery excuses they make
are why other European governments have ordered gyms, pools, cinemas, etc to close

These countries all have a minority of selfish fuckers too,
but at least their governments have the courage and will to close & ban things instead of just advising people to avoid them

RhiWrites · 17/03/2020 07:51

The Gymshark app has made all their home workouts free. Lots of other apps are doing the same. Work out at home, stay fit and safe. (Sorry for the power lifters, it’s harder for you, I know.)

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 07:57

@Amanduh, the government have PURPOSEFULLY given ‘advice’ making individuals and businesses take responsibility for their own decisions. Therefore avoiding having to take any responsibility financially for those that have ‘decided’ not to work etcAlso protecting the insurance companies for massive payouts and companies from paying refunds

They have also been very clear, that the plan is for as many people to get it as possible. And that people will die

I think a large proportion have no faith in the Governments logic/strategy and are making their own decisions (as they have been forced to do actually)

I am making my own decisions to keep us safe, which is more restrictive; no work or school. But I totally understand people ignoring Boris. It’s perfectly logical to keep going to the gym if we are all at work and school. Not going to the gym ISNT slowing the spread

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 08:00

Plus, Boris’s approach encourages individualism. So people WILL be selfish.

Womenwotlunch · 17/03/2020 08:01

This is why the government need to enforce a ban on non essential activities. There are people in this thread who do not understand that going to the gym could compromise the health of others.
I love the gym, but have cancelled all my sessions ( including personal training sessions with my trainer) . Believe me, it wasn’t easy to do this as I exercise for mental as well as physical reasons.
The problem is that there is little clarity from the government regarding this issue and so people are going to do as they please

Btw- just because someone is healthy and doesn’t have symptoms it doesn’t mean that they haven’t got the virus.
Idris Elba didn’t have any symptoms but tested positive for the virus.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 08:05

Interesting that Idris got tested. They are supposedly only testing those that are in hospital WITH symptoms

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 08:06

Not going to the gym ISNT slowing the spread

How does that work? At the moment a lot of people refuse to change their habits and it will take for them to be personally affected for them to do so I think. A study at the weekend showed that only 30% of people have even taken advice to wash hands.

Womenwotlunch · 17/03/2020 08:09

Idris was tested because he had been around someone who tested positive for the virus.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 08:09

Because of the amount of people we are all in contact with every day at work and school. I work amongst 10000 people. My kids are at school with 3000 people. It makes no difference if I go to the gym and mix with 40 more people

If Boris was remotely serious about slowing the spread (he isn’t, he has said so) then schools and work places would be closed or skeleton only for vulnerable kids/kids of essential workers

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 08:10

@Womenwotlunch but they are reportedly not testing people who have been in contact, any more. Only those with symptoms and in hospital

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 08:15

And presumably those people in regular contact with vulnerable people, like myself, ARENT going to the gym. But still having to go to work/school

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 08:40

It does make a difference because one of those 40 extra people might have the virus. They might not have it but more people = more risk.

Womenwotlunch · 17/03/2020 08:45

@SubjectMatterExpert- That’s what I thought. Presumably, Idris Elba was tested privately

Teabag37 · 17/03/2020 08:56

Are you all mad ?? Here in Italy gyms & swimming pools were among the first to close ! You can't possibly respect the 1mt distance between other people & not everyone is going to be disinfecting equipment (& handrails, doornobs etc).....you pick up the virus & then take it home.........

Willyoujustbequiet · 17/03/2020 09:00

Idiots! Surrounded by them

Irresponsible and selfish to go to the gym. How the hell can anyone be so stupid

SilverOtter · 17/03/2020 09:05

I was really torn as to whether to come this morning, but I am currently in the gym.

I figure exercise is part of keeping myself healthy, plus if/when they do close I don't know how long I'll have to go without it!

Clymene · 17/03/2020 09:08

Do you not understand the guidance @SilverOtter? I've attached a handy photo for you.

Go home.

To go to the gym as normal?
Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 09:09

I figure exercise is part of keeping myself healthy,

And sod the vulnerable people who aren't as healthy as you, eh?

Look, most of us will recover from this virus if we get it. But a significant number won't. Do you really not care about them? Because transmission is usually caused by 'healthy people going about their business'

Lweji · 17/03/2020 09:10

What the government should be doing is (literally) another thread.

However, it looks like individuals and the community will have to take responsibility.

In that sense, everyone should take the initiative to keep as low contact as possible, even if schools haven't closed and you have to go to work.

Demand more measures from the government, stay away from non essential activities.
