To go to the gym as normal?

GymMummyBunny · 16/03/2020 10:26

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

We are in the middle of a global pandemic and Boris has chosen to keep schools open. Until he decides the situation goes to a lockdown status then I am expected to act like Britain is on lockdown but also carry on as normal at work and send my children to school as normal. It is a most surreal time. And although I understand the method to the madness, it is extremely frustrating. I am around at least 500 people a day.... my children are exposed to 1000 people a day. My gym is a small private one that sees around 20 people max a day. My logic.... until schools close I will carrry on.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 06:26

I'm alright Jack pull up the ladder attitude is still prevalent in our society during a world pandemic

Utterly utterly selfish

motherheroic · 17/03/2020 06:32

Waiting for the government to tell you to stop? The same government that has kept all the schools open? The same government that is miles behind all the other countries who are able to test 10's of thousands of people a day for the virus?

motherheroic · 17/03/2020 06:37

ONE person caused 80% of the cases in South Korea because she wanted to go to a breakfast buffet. But yeah, 'My life. My business.' Whatever you need to tell yourself and all that.

Passthecake30 · 17/03/2020 06:42

I'm not going. I rarely see anyone cleaning the equipment and have caught norovirus twice before - after which I asked for hand sanitizer to be provided, which it was, but its disappeared now. I have (managed) asthma, so I'm trying to run atm, with Pilates at home. I'll also be doing YouTube videos if I'm in the house on my own (or with the kids if schools shut).

Jespers · 17/03/2020 06:44

Personally, I think you’d be insane to go to the gym where people touch equipment constantly and sweat.
What to people not understand about avoiding unnecessary contact??

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 06:46

song yes I agree with your logic.
I feel very exposed at work. Dh thinks I am paranoid but I’m not protected at work. It’s alright telling workers to be clean but my bosses haven’t stopped the public footfall and I don’t believe other people all have the same hygiene standards as me.
Schools are not clean places. Hospitals are full of unclean patients trailing in and out.
In reality if I go to the theatre it’s probably full of much cleaner, healthier people than I am exposed to at work.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 06:48

Having said that, no I have stopped going to the gym.

littlestrawby · 17/03/2020 06:50

I cannot believe what I'm reading here. Selfish idiotic twats (and I never use that word)

Findawaytobehappy · 17/03/2020 06:54

I would still go, OP. Just don’t touch your face and wash your hands thoroughly after!

middleager · 17/03/2020 06:54

One of the doctors in Italy said the country was in crisis because "we were too selfish to change our habits."

We are no different. Our so called plan is the same as Italy (only their healthcare better) and look to them to see how this will pan out.

The Govt needs to issue a complete lockdown as we can't be trusted to do the right thing

Findawaytobehappy · 17/03/2020 06:56

ONE person caused 80% of the cases in South Korea because she wanted to go to a breakfast buffet

Well, technically ONE person started the entire chain of infection so I don’t get your point here.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 06:56

We are not miles behind look to the numbers of confirmed cases before other countries had a lockdown France too strongly advised people to avoid non essential contact

When schools close we have another issue thousands of parents who work for the NHS and other necessary services having no childcare

emilybrontescorsett · 17/03/2020 07:01

Of course people are selfish it’s not rocket science!
I don’t know where anyone gets the impression that they aren’t.
The British voted in a selfish government who do not give one fuck about anyone else.
I’m more baffled that people are surprised by this.
The only thing this government care about is money. There making and retention of THEIR money.
When you voted for this government you voted to assassinate the NHS.
Quite frankly you don’t deserve access to a decent NHS.
Now people are panicking and crying because they have discovered that others can act as selfish as they do. Surprise!
Yes other people have the “I’m alright Jack “ attitude and you don’t like it, well you reap what you sow.

WanderingTrolley1 · 17/03/2020 07:02

Reading this thread in disbelief! I cannot fathom how an overwhelming number of you can be so selfish.

Findawaytobehappy · 17/03/2020 07:07

It think people are getting a little hysterical on this thread.
This virus exists now, it always will. Until they create a vaccine for it and include it in the yearly flu jab everyone is at risk of getting it.
However, most of us who are healthy and do not have a compromised immune system will catch it at some point as we don’t get the flu jab every year. If not this time, then next time it circulates.

The important thing is not to necessarily avoid catching it yourself but to avoid passing it to people who would seriously suffer as a result. So, don’t go visit elderly relatives etc. Bearing in mind that this group will soon be told to self isolate anyway to stop them catching the disease.
If you go to the gym, then work from home and get your shopping delivered - or even just practise good hygiene when you do go out, then I can’t see the problem as long as nobody in your household is immuno-compromised.
I’m about 80% i have already had it - this was last weekend and I had every single symptom going. I didn’t go anywhere all week and so didn’t spread it.

I just wish people would stop adding to the mass hysteria and try to be a little more sensible about the whole thing!

motherheroic · 17/03/2020 07:11

@Findawaytobehappy Seems like people only care about their relatives. 'Dont visit your elderly relatives'. 'Don't visit your immunocompromised relatives'. There are asymptomatic people who are going to pass it onto elderly strangers and immunocompromised people who have left their house.

Iamthewombat · 17/03/2020 07:15

My logic....until schools close I will carry on.

I expect that if or when the schools close, your logic (I use the term loosely) will be ‘until Boris Johnson personally visits me to discuss at great length how he can accommodate my wishes, and tells me unequivocally not to go to the gym, and arranges alternative exercise opportunities for me, I will carry on’.

speakout · 17/03/2020 07:18

My DDs dance school is still open and still well attended.
The logic is that they are mixing at school then why not after school.

midgebabe · 17/03/2020 07:21

Stop going to the gym...if you are not worried , and you don't know anyone who is vulnerable, at least think about the NHS. Lots of people just like you will need NHS treatment when you catch it.

Think about the poor doctors and nurses in Italy and Spain and don't do that to our NHS please

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 07:23

Whilst kids are still going to school and people still going to work; I can’t really see the point in not going to the gym tbh.

If I went to the gym! Grin I work amongst 10,000 people. I have 2 children at different schools so add another 3000. What difference does another 30 odd people in the gym, make??

Peapod29 · 17/03/2020 07:24

I went last night but I think it will be the last time for a while. Many of the members are 60s-70s (small rural health club type place). In truth I can’t think it’s worth the club staying open but knowing the stubborn attitude of some of the members I suspect they will keep going. I heard some discussing It last night and they said as much.

songsanddancing · 17/03/2020 07:25

I am expected to carry on at work as usual. Putting myself in range of 100s of other people. Because Boris has advised to avoid social gatherings, this needs to be taken as gospel. But oh wait. Those people who deliver the food shopping. Those who work in supermarkets. Those who work in schools. Those who work in healthcare. Those who are children of school age. Those expected to still pay full price nursery fees. Those small businesses that cannot claim insurance until Boris orders a lockdown rather than advises.

People are going crazy over people going to the gym. This is a bizarre situation. It's not nice for all involved.

Postspecific · 17/03/2020 07:26

No.

However, I understand what you mean. Our kids are exposed to hundreds of people every day but apparently that’s fine. How to make a mockery of the whole thing.

songsanddancing · 17/03/2020 07:28

Not just children. The 100s and 100s of staff. Not just teachers. Support, admin, cleaners etc
