To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

Unbelievable selfishness and lack of responsibility on this thread. Anyone who thinks that their next PB or pound lost is more important than another person's life is just despicable. Anyone who can't see the link is an idiot or has their head in the sand. Anyone who says oh well I might as well go to the gym because I'm at much more risk of catching the virus at work, Jesus Christ I despair.

Please, please, for the sake of us all, heed the government advice and avoid any social contact that isn't essential. Look at the Imperial College report that came out yesterday and their modelling. Many, many people are going to die in the UK. Our behaviour - your behaviour - will determine whether that's tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people.

Iloveknockknockjokes · 17/03/2020 09:13

The gym goers should be ashamed. Horrendous. The government on Thursday unveiled a strategy that said a quarter of a million would die. Now saying they didn't realise that when it was blindingly obvious. People need to be following the lead of other European countries and WHO.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 09:17

To be honest, the local sports centre is totally empty, alcohol sanitiser on all doors, swipe cards to go in etc

No social contact required at all and no-one there to pass anything on to

so maybe stop with the handwringing

Pilot12 · 17/03/2020 09:21

DP has quit the gym and taken up early morning jogging instead. He's not risking it.

Clymene · 17/03/2020 09:22

You have been asked not to go out @Orangeblossom78

Why can't you just do what you've been asked? Confused

Lweji · 17/03/2020 09:23

There's always one, I suppose.
It's empty because everyone else is more socially responsible, it seems.

Indeed, if no one else is there, the risk is minimal, but for that to happen, most people have to stay away.

HairyFloppins · 17/03/2020 09:26

I don't think my neighbour quite understands. Still at the sweaty gym this morning. Still going to coffee shops. She lives with her mother in is in her late 80s.

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 09:28

Quite.

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 09:29

That's your local sports centre, Orangeblossom. Surely it's not too great a stretch to think that other sports centres may not be the same.

PrimeraVez · 17/03/2020 09:34

Some of you lot are fucking crazy.

I'm in a country that is a few weeks ahead of the UK. 95% of things are shut here, and rightly so. Schools, nurseries, universities, bars, clubs, gyms, soft play, sports clubs, salons...

Can't believe going to your Legs, Bums & Tums class is considered more important than trying to limit the spread of a disease that could wipe out a significant proportion of the population.

I bet you're the same people that will be back here in a few weeks bleating about how long you've been on hold to 111, or how 'discusted' you are that Great Aunt Mavis was left untreated in A&E for 9 hours.

MummyPop00 · 17/03/2020 10:02

@Primeravez

Spot on.

People are fucking idiots.

Isolate. Isolate. ISOLATE.

If you have to exercise, do it in the house or outside well away from people.

Simples.

Notthemessiah · 17/03/2020 10:21

WTAF? I cannot believe what I'm reading and that so many people here are so utterly stupid and selfish.

'I don't want to stop going as I'm losing weight' - jesus fucking christ. Go for a fucking run and stop being such arseholes.

SerenDippitty · 17/03/2020 10:25

I’m stopping the gym for the time being.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/03/2020 10:25

Am I missing something? Genuinely? Where does Boris's advice say to avoid gyms? I read pubs & restaurants, and big social gatherings. People are quite rightly confused by the vague advice.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 10:30

I have not 'been told not to go out' Confused

Just rang the sports centre and they told me they are open and Ok to go.

evilharpy · 17/03/2020 10:30

My gym is still open and running classes but “stepping up the hygiene routine”. The leisure centre in my town is also BAU. No, I won’t be going, although I will be running outside unless told otherwise.

Notthemessiah · 17/03/2020 10:31

And for those people saying 'Well we're all going to work so why not go to the gymn', the whole point is to reduce risk and exposure from uncessary things (like gyms) so we can keep doing the stuff we actually need to do (like work and food shops) for at least a little bit longer.

You idiots are just bringing forward the total lockdown that is eventually coming.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 10:31

I'm more concerned by stuff like the woman I saw working on Boots pharmacy counter yesterday coughing away while telling other workers 'it's just a cough, I always get them' to be honest.

WingingItSince1973 · 17/03/2020 10:32

I suggest you go online and follow the guidelines set out by the government and stop trying to twist the advice to give you the green light to keep going about your daily routines. This is going to get bad. We all need to start thinking of others and not ourselves and being selfish!!! Stop making excuses for your activities. I love swimming and our hotel pool is usually empty but am no way risking it now. I pay a fee each month which I'll still pay but I'm not risking my health or those around me. If I caught this virus by being blaise about it i wouldnt be able to see my family. I'm limiting contact as it is to immediate family but if you read the guidelines its really strict on even who you have visit you. Going to the gym is not even a factor!

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 10:37

The even emailed us to tell us it was still open and what they were doing. It is council run. If it was advised not to go they should be closing, not emailing us reassuring us it is ok to go. I'm not going today anyway btw but it is very confusing)

Ponoka7 · 17/03/2020 10:39

@Orangeblossom78

"I'm more concerned by stuff like the woman I saw working on Boots pharmacy counter yesterday coughing away while telling other workers 'it's just a cough, I always get them' to be honest."

I've got a cough. It's the cough that i get every year around this time. If you get coughs, you know your cough.

Which is why we need testing. People can't just self isolate for a cough, or the odd high temperature.

There was no real answer from the journalist as to why we aren't testing. Chris Whitty sort of tried to make it sound ok, but it isn't.

We need to know whose got it and whose possibly become immune by having it. So we can mobilise workers/volunteers.

TooGood2BeTrue · 17/03/2020 10:42

I shall still be going until the schools close. Until that happens any 'measures' apart from meticulous hygiene are futile in my opinion. And agree with PP that testing people is vital.

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 10:43

Just rang the sports centre and they told me they are open and Ok to go.

Ah yes, how fortunate to have coronavirus experts working in your local sports centre Hmm

Actual scientific experts on Imperial College's Covid 19 response team have warned that 250, 000 may die. But once Jane in the sports centre reckons it's fine then I'm sure you'll be okay. Presume you aren't concerned about potentially passing it on to anyone.

Lweji · 17/03/2020 10:50

Because it's on top of usually at capacity capabilities. A friend at my old place of work is usually overworked doing tests for other diseases anyway.
I don't get the feeling that the UK government is interested in increasing capacity with more funds.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 17/03/2020 10:58

@amiapropermum Agreed. Sports centre havem't got a clue. They need the money so have to open until ordered to close.
