To go to the gym as normal?

I know they are seen as awash with germs but mine is pretty clean. I always wipe down the equipment well before and after using, especially where my hands are going to go, and wash hands as soon as I’ve finished.

I really don’t want to stop as I’m doing well losing weight and getting fitter, and exercise is good for the immune system anyway! I would need to stop going for months to avoid the virus.

AIBU? Slightly concerned about taking the virus home to family.

That's not the case though - many people pay for a year up front or have 3 month cancellation clauses, so they are still getting paid.

Notthemessiah · 17/03/2020 11:36

I shall still be going until the schools close. Until that happens any 'measures' apart from meticulous hygiene are futile in my opinion.

People like @TooGood2BeTrue are either amazingly stupid or deliberately misunderstanding in order to justify their own selfish behaviour.

It isn't an all or nothing - total freedom or total lockdown. Reducing the amount of exposure is better than doing nothing at all. It will still slow down the spread of the virus and means we don't have to go into full lockdown until later.

So no, it isn't all a waste of time while the schools and offices ares till open.

Iamthewombat · 17/03/2020 11:45

Those expected to still pay full price nursery fees.

(From a PP, in the context of ‘anyone still paying nursery fees has the right to do as they please).

What’s your solution then? Lay off all the nursery staff? Rent and rates still need to be paid.

CuppaZa · 17/03/2020 11:48

Some real simpletons on this thread HmmConfused when did vanity become so important

TooGood2BeTrue · 17/03/2020 11:49

@notthemessiah Is it too hard to argue your case without resorting to personal insults? If anyone is 'amazingly stupid' it's the UK government that is going against the advice of WHO experts and senior doctors in the NHS by implementing this half-arsed approach that will achieve nothing except from putting people in small businesses out of work and income.

astridstar · 17/03/2020 12:00

I'm a keen gym goer but no longer going to the gym. I'm surprised at the no of people who think that cleaning surfaces with antiseptic gels/wipes at the gym is enough. The virus primarily spreads when one person breathes in droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. So therefore your fellow gym goer, pounding away on the treadmill next to you, out of breath & panting heavily will be emitting tiny small droplets. Also I understand that some of the the high prevalence areas from some of the Chinese data were gyms. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/coronavirus-gym-is-it-safe-avoid-symptoms-outbreak-cases-a9393341.html%3famp

I've just had to cancel a holiday and was lucky enough to get my money back so am using some of that to buy a treadmill

I think you're in the 'deliberately misunderstanding' column as your latest post is just more self-justification for doing what you want rather than what you obviously know is right.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 12:11

@amiapropermum so if the virus was passed by eating Cadbury’s cream eggs. If I ate 13,000 of them, it would be pointless not to eat another 30

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 12:16

@subjectmatterexpert that is the most ridiculous analogy from someone whose user name is subject matter expert 😂😂😂😂

I'd say knock yourself out with the cream eggs. In people, it's clear that more people = more risk.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 12:19

30/13000 is a vanishing small additional risk. If you are serious about reducing risk, then you stop the 13,000 contact. It isn’t hard to understand

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 12:22

It's also not hard to understand that just one of the 30 people (or cream eggs Grin ) might be carrying it. You really made me laugh with that!

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 12:28

The likelihood of 1/30 but NOT 1/13000 is not much

Notthemessiah · 17/03/2020 12:28

So if the virus was passed by eating Cadbury’s cream eggs. If I ate 13,000 of them, it would be pointless not to eat another 30.

No it wouldn't as there is still a chance that the infected one was one of the 30. A much smaller chance, but not so much that it is pointless avoiding it.

It's amazing how some people simply cannot or will not understand that more eggs\people = more risk, no matter what numbers you are talking about.

If you keep eating all the eggs, either there will soon be none left or they will have to ban them entirely to protect your health.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 12:41

I DO understand, but

  1. the ADDITIONAL risk is negligible really. Depends of course on how many people you work amongst. For me, it’s a massive ratio and the likelihood of 1/30 but NOT 1/13000 is v low

  2. if Boris REALLY wanted to stop the spread he would stop work/school. He is not btw. He has TOLD us that he wants it to spread

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 12:46

If you applied this as an approach in risk management for a company/ risk to HSE and someone became sick. You would end up in court; for a clearly flawed approach to reducing the risk

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 12:46

It's not just about yourself, SubjectMatterExpert. It's about potentially passing it to or getting it from your family, friends, or other people you care about. The risk is still there. For me, it's too high a risk. I want to be safe and I want my loved ones to be safe.

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 12:47

It's also not about court. This is about people's lives.

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 12:50

But your examples and analogies (from cream eggs to court Grin ) get ever more entertaining. I don't think your username is accurate on this one, though!

undead · 17/03/2020 12:55

I am going bootcamp tonight which is held outside. Not sure if it's still going on but so far it hasn't been cancelled.
If it's cancelled I might book pt sessions.

All the dc's groups and classes have been cancelled.

justmyview · 17/03/2020 13:01

I realise OP started this thread yesterday morning, before the updated guidance at 5 PM last night

However, I'm astonished that people still think it might be okay to go to the gym in light of current guidance. I also saw a number of people in local cafes this morning. All of this probably brings us closer to a forced shutdown

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 13:01

@amiapropermummy

I am wfh, kids at home, NOT going to gym or anywhere. I have 2 very at risk people’s that I am very close to, so taking no risks

I am furious at the idea that people think not going to the gym is in any way helpful, whilst all the schools are still open and everyone still goes to work

I can’t help you with what I said about ending up in court as an employer using this clearly in effective approach, if you are unable to apply that to this situation

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 13:06

I'm glad you're taking it seriously, despite your analogies on here, and I hope that you and everyone close to you remains safe.

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 13:09

2) if Boris REALLY wanted to stop the spread he would stop work/school. He is not btw. He has TOLD us that he wants it to spread

No, no, no. The government has climbed down from that position.

SubjectMatterExpert · 17/03/2020 13:14

@Moomin8

They SAY that they have climbed down from that position. Theoretically they have climbed down from that position. But the approach that they are taking evidences that is still actually the approach that they are taking

I almost wish everyone would ignore Boris’s lame directions to not do these activities, to force his hand

He has just pitted people against each other

amiapropermum · 17/03/2020 13:17

@SubjectMatterExpert you said you are WFH, your kids are at home and you're taking no risks.

I think you're being really irresponsible by continuing to post in a way that encourages other people to take risks. I hope nobody listens to you.
