Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

*of the fittest, it's survival vs the idiots who'll drag others down and blame everyone but themselves

PickAChew · 15/03/2020 22:31

I'm not a massively social person and really need to destress as a carer (no health needs, they're pretty robust) so I am continuing to take quiet walks for my own wellbeing and keep stocked up with fresh, healthy food etc until I no longer can. This is not going to be all over by May.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:31

eople seem to enjoy panicking - remember y2k? The world was going to end with the millennium- planes falling from sky etc

FFS - it's a good thing we saw the problem and developed a solution to solve it before it became serious, isnt' it?

Dongdingdong · 15/03/2020 22:32

I am worried more about the mental health of everybody through this and afterwards. I am not at all frightened of getting it, but really frightened of the breakdown in society. We seem to have lost our collective marbles. People talk about blitz spirit but the UK is a different beast from WWII. We are selfish and weak, the last few days have shown that.

Excellent post @Sarcelle.

SmokedGlass · 15/03/2020 22:32

I’ve had to self isolate because of flying home from a country with cases
I work in the medical industry
So, I’ve self isolated for nearly 2 weeks with no symptoms, I’ve been fine
Got loads of stuff done in the home, kept busy and tried not to waste this time
I live on my own so could not pass anything on even if I did have it
Back to work on Wednesday, back to routine and normal life

So..... I carry on as usual then what if I do catch it? self isolate again

We carry on as normal, bring mindful of others and being aware
Other than that, nothing we can do

JellyfishandShells · 15/03/2020 22:32

Because we aren’t hysterics and conspiracy theory followers ?

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:33

Which ones are the conspiracy theorists? The doomsayers, or the ones following Boris' Secret Science? I can't actually tell.

TSSDNCOP · 15/03/2020 22:34

That’s not an even reasonable comparison. Do you know how many months and dollars were spent to make sure Y2K wasn’t an event? If we could stop Corona with a robust project plan and an army of coders don’t you imagine we would?

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 22:34

Because if I don't work I don't get paid , I don't get paid I don't pay my mortgage or afford to eat .
My dc going to school because 1) it's open 2) because he has special needs and won't understand if he had to stay home .
3) I feel that keeping to the normality in this madness is the right thing to do see point 2.
I also think that we are all going to get it anyway so nothing I can do about it .
I do not think it's not serious, I am worried but I do not agree with lockdown and that we must keep to normal because it's not about stopping the spread anymore.
If they really wanted to stop the spread they should of stopped flights weeks ago from China / Italy .

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 15/03/2020 22:35

Quite frankly I'm more concerned about having to teach and maintain some form of order and behaviour management in larger classes than my normal 32 teenagers, I don't even think there's enough room in my classroom.

Yester · 15/03/2020 22:35

I was quite easy going last weekend. Went to cafes and took buses. Spent the last week in bed (still here) with very most probably CV19. Can't sleep for coughing. Keeps making me vomit from coughing so much. I have no other conditions and it has knocked me for six. Very frightened now for others.

GinnyWeasleysQuiff · 15/03/2020 22:36

Because they don't want to think that life as they know it is to end sat n the house panicking drama queen I know

ChainsawBear · 15/03/2020 22:36

Realistically, DH, the DC and I are going to get it. So what good would trashing our mental health and economy do in the meantime? We're staying away from the DPs and DPILs, but I can't live my life hiding. Hibernating at home for the kind of timescales we're talking about is going to be impossible, so I'll save it for when we actually get asked to go into lockdown, when it might actually be useful.

Pixxie7 · 15/03/2020 22:37

Lack of any structured plans people are having to make their own minds up as to how they want to play this.
I am really concerned that the government is not addressing the big issues like homelessness and social deprivation ie child poverty.

Wehttam · 15/03/2020 22:37

Because people know nothing more than their normal lives. We are so beyond screwed it’s not even remotely funny. I truly wish I could go about life with sheer blind ignorance because it’s the last days of life as we know it right now.

PickAChew · 15/03/2020 22:38

Agree about supporting local businesses. There's a fab greengrocer near our bus station that I make a point of buying from and an Indian greengrocer with aboutva dozen different varieties of Dahl that I'm making a point of walking by more often. A visit to our favourite chippy is in this week's meal plan and if dh ends up working from home, we will use an amazing nearby farm shop as much as possible.

sageandroses · 15/03/2020 22:39

As a pp said, I come on Mumsnet and see a level of hysteria which I'm just not seeing in real life... nothing whatsoever has changed around here. We're all washing hands more often than normal, as advised, but no one's off work, or requesting to work from home, or keeping their kids off school, or not going to the shops. I live in a tourist area and there's still lots of people about. I constantly find myself wondering where people on Mumsnet live!

110011pi · 15/03/2020 22:40

There is no vaccine. There is no evidence of immunity. Why are you trusting these people and not the scientists screaming at the UK to reconsider their 'strategy'. Wow, so many people will die because of sheer stupidity.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 15/03/2020 22:40

We take risks everyday wether your conscious of it or not. Merely walking out of your door is a risk. I’m not gonna sit at home twiddling my thumbs waiting for a virus I may or may not get. I generally didn’t go out much anyway as DS has asd but I need to go to work, it the situation arises where I need to stay home I will, but at the moment I will continue as normal.

Megan2018 · 15/03/2020 22:40

@SmokedGlass well said!

I think some people get off on panic, it’s filling the post Brexit void for them.

We all need to be sensible and selfless, it’s a horrible situation and life is going to be challenging for a relatively long time. People will die. The world economy is going to be horrendous. Businesses will fail and some lives will be ruined.
But most people will come out the other side and worry and flapping is going to do bugger all to change anything - as is staying completely indoors before it is necessary.

FreakStar · 15/03/2020 22:44

Well, I figured if I'm going to have to go to work tomorrow (in a primary school) and dd will be going to school too then there's not much point staying in all weekend is there? I went to the pub!

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 22:45

I truly wish I could go about life with sheer blind ignorance because it’s the last days of life as we know it right now.

Last days of life as we know it? You are ready living like this?

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 22:45

Because many people apparently equate sensible social distancing with 'panic'.

AhoyMrBeaver · 15/03/2020 22:46

I go to work Monday to Friday, mixing with hundreds of people, there is no option to avoid that. It would be pointless for me to shut myself away at home on Saturday and Sunday, just to go back out to work on Monday!

TreeTopTim · 15/03/2020 22:47

I am carrying on as normal as I can but taking precautions such as washing my hands more and not going out as much as I normally would.

I am prone to depression so if I have to stay inside my house for weeks or months I fear that my depression will return. I fear depression more than coronavirus.
