Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

Because people know nothing more than their normal lives. We are so beyond screwed it’s not even remotely funny. I truly wish I could go about life with sheer blind ignorance because it’s the last days of life as we know it right now

Get a fucking grip

Verily1 · 15/03/2020 22:48

Ignorance is the most dangerous of human qualities

Because every week day my DH is expected to go into a school of +1,000 students and staff. Until they close the schools I’m at risk of getting it from my DH. He is expected to show up until the government decides enough is enough. Until then I will carry on as I am with added precautions as the most likely person I’ll contract it from is DH.

@wehttam

Please please screenshot this post of yours. So when none of this happens you can realise how utterly mad it was.

I'm struggling to see the level of panic on MN in real life.

Same. I might self isolate from MN for a week or two. The hysteria and panic on here is contagious.
Went for a walk earlier, everything seemed normal.
Worst case scenario is 450,000 people will die in this country.
A huge number, and tragic, but some people (on MN) are talking like it's going to be all of us.

Alwaysfrank · 15/03/2020 22:49

I went to the cinema last week and there were 5 other people in there, the biggest screen. If we say that 20,000 people in the UK now have the virus, that's about 3 in every 10,000 of the population. My trip to the cinema was extremely low risk!

I've since been to the theatre and had a weekend away with meals out. I suspect places were quieter than they would have been but life was going on as normal, all around.

Potkettlexx · 15/03/2020 22:49

Because I work in a customer facing role handling cash all day long. People coughing and spluttering all over me. I still have to go to work so that’s more risky than anything social.... working with money alone is extra exposure compared to someone who doesn’t work with cash.

Also as a mid thirties mother with no underlying health issues and the sane for DH and children then what else am I supposed to do? Stay in the house permanently? I went for lunch today in a small country pub and there was only us and sniffed couple. Staff said how quiet it had been as it’s a holiday destination. I bet the business was phrased we went!

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:50

450,000 people dying is like the entire population of Liverpool being wiped out. If you knew that was going to happen over the next year, wouldn't you be doing your damnedest to save some of them?

Stoic123 · 15/03/2020 22:50

I went to a yoga class this morning and met friends for lunch - spent money at local businesses that are going to be struggling very soon.

I’m low risk and my remaining family is also low risk. Any people I manage who are not in the same situation are being encouraged to work from home.

If government advice changes to support health demand management, I will adjust my behaviour accordingly.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:50

m prone to depression so if I have to stay inside my house for weeks or months I fear that my depression will return

I hear you - and that sounds like you have found a halfway house.

I wonder how much longer a lockdown can take place in Italy and other countries?

Arnoldthecat · 15/03/2020 22:51

They have not been fully informed of the importance of social distancing. They will almost certainly be acting as vectors for the virus, putting their own and their family members health at risk.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 22:51

MaomiMak
Have you been watching news items related to Italy recently?

Potkettlexx · 15/03/2020 22:51

Another not sniffed 😯

*pleased€ not phrased 😂

Icanflyhigh · 15/03/2020 22:51

Why?

Because I have no underlying health issues and no reason to stop living.

Thenthatsthatthen · 15/03/2020 22:51

If people don’t go out both me and DH will be out of a job very soon. My workplace has already warned they don’t think we’ll be open beyond next week. So currently I’m more worried how we’re going to get by with little or no income than I am about catching the virus. Im immune suppressed, with elderly parents and grandparents but life has to go on for as long as possible-rent has the be paid, DC fed etc.

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:51

Well, you DO know its going to happen, and you can save them by staying indoors, supporting school closures and limiting all human contact.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 22:52

Crikey.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:53

Do people understand why Italy and other countries are on a lockdown and have only kept certain places open?

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:53

@Thenthatsthatthen I am so sorry, I understand that not everyone has choices available to them. It's our government's job to make sure people don't lose their homes or starve in this situation, and they are not doing what they need to do.

MaomiMak · 15/03/2020 22:54

Headline news in July 2009

Swine flu could kill 65,000 in UK, warns chief medical officer

It was 457 in fact

Justaboy · 15/03/2020 22:54

I see that another 3,000 odd have recovered in China that is increasing around that amount every day. The number infected there remains alomst stable.

The rest of the world is up like a skyrocket.

I'm mainly staying in and when i go out i maintain a couple or three meteres from anyone i can!

And a good hand wash with normal soap when I get back in:)

deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/03/2020 22:54

Also because sooner or later we will be forced to stay in our homes anyway.

Zenithbear · 15/03/2020 22:55

Because I'm 99% sure I've already had it.
Because I'm not a good panicker.
Because work is still open and we come into contact with a lot of the public anyway.
Because I want to support the economy other than panic buying (which I haven't done or seen any evidence of yet)
Because I go out tons anyway and have been doing over the past few weeks/months. Parties, gym, holidays, social gatherings, gigs, meals, dog walks, a wedding, cinema, theatre. That is my life, so until we're told not to or I get poorly I'm carrying on.

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 22:55

*'. Wow, so many people will die because of sheer stupidity
*
Ignorance is the most dangerous of human qualities
Just a couple of comments copied .
This is what annoys me that because we are carrying on as normal you assume we are stupid and ignorant. We know very well that we will get this virus so what do we do come on here and create mass hysteria or do we try and create some normality for our dc .
Even if the world ended tomorrow I'd still go to work and carry on because I refuse to panic as it's not going to stop me catching Coronavirus.

mindproject · 15/03/2020 22:55

I still have to go to work, do the shopping etc. Why would I stop doing everything else? Are we all just going to give up everything? Are we going to stop seeing friends, doing things we love, getting out the house? That's going to be miserable. I am washing my hands a lot and keeping a bit of distance from people where possible, but life has to go on.
