Because we are too rebellious. I cannot envisage people staying indoors for any length of time

OP posts:

The government is introducing legislation to deal with people testing positive for coronavirus defying self isolation. Saw it on BBC news. If they need legislation for that think it’d be som time before people without symptoms who hadn’t tested positive would need to do anything more than say “I need some food in.” That being said I think most people are generally taking this very seriously and will restrict their movements to some degree, which they should. I’m an ED doc and literally just heard Matt Hancock say today on the BBC that they expect 10-20% of those infected to be in critical condition. Meaning needing ITU. My hospital has like, one free ventilator on average at all times. Like JCB are going to be able to turn around specialist medical equipment in 2 weeks. Literally terrifying.

That being said though, that does mean that 80-90% will be fine.

Libbykins · 15/03/2020 20:32

Sorry, should clarify. With getting rid of routine operations and usage of theatre ventilators we might have something like 15 free ventilators currently. Would be really difficult to staff safely but that’s our current max as an educated estimate. If cases are spread out over the UK and we don’t peak in one go we might be OK. At a complete push pulling out all the stops. But I feel like there is no margin for error and 50/50 for being in a state like Italy

Eckhart · 15/03/2020 20:32

@Squigean I thought that. What, the British? We're the ones who respect queuing in orderly lines and do passive aggressive humphing!

Lovemusic33 · 15/03/2020 20:34

I don’t get how they can police people leaving their homes, if you live in a rural area there’s not going to be police sat outside, I live rurally and there are hardly any police here, if you were to call the police they might get around to getting to you within 4 hours. I can understand it in cities but it’s not going to work in rural villages is it?

Like you OP I have a child with ASD who is very active, keeping her in will be hard work 😓

Bananabixfloof · 15/03/2020 20:36

If the police can’t enforce it, the army will. And if the army can’t enforce it politely they will use force. It’s naive to think otherwise

No they wont. The worst that could happen is fines.
They cant shoot you or anything.

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 20:37

Because we are too rebellious

Evidence that Britons are any more rebellious than the Italians, Spaniards and Irish please? I'm assuming you have that?

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 20:37

I truly feel for those without funds / support, and families with children of a young age or disability where they will struggle to understand why we have to self isolate but the rest of us need to get a grip
You don't know that the ones disputing a enforced lockdown are because of these reasons do you ? .

Hoggleludo · 15/03/2020 20:38

This thread gets weirder

I'm out! Have fun peeps!

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 20:38

They cant shoot you or anything.

I bet they often wish they could though.

Bagelsandbrie · 15/03/2020 20:38

@Lovemusic33 exact same situation here - including child with asd.

Bearbehind · 15/03/2020 20:40

So how do you think this would play out?

Say you’re the only person in a deserted street and you’re told by a member of the military that you shouldn’t be there and to go home

Are you honestly saying that people are going to say ‘Fuck off, you can’t shoot me so I’ll just carry on’ and that they’ll wait for their fine to come through?

isabellerossignol · 15/03/2020 20:40

No they wont. The worst that could happen is fines.

The army have quite a noticeable history of shooting unarmed citizens within the UK within the past 50 years, so I think it's a bit daft to say that it could never happen.

I mean, I don't actually think it's likely, but it's a bit naive to think it could never happen.

IceniSky · 15/03/2020 20:41

Countires are closing boarders. Societies are halting and yet people still don't comprehend what is happening here.

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 20:41

They cant shoot you or anything

Some people need shooting especially is Asda today Grin

See? Naive.

All it takes is for martial law to be declared, and I think you’ll find they can shoot you, if the govt brings in an emergency law. And they can certainly already tase you, if necessary.

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 20:43

Yeah that's the daft thing HmmGrin

AutumnRose1 · 15/03/2020 20:44

“ I think you’ll find they can shoot you“

So mum and I can go for a walk and get shot? Compared to other options, that’s not a bad way to go.

ChrissieKeller61 · 15/03/2020 20:44

I don’t think they’ll shoot us but I can see them escorting you home

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 15/03/2020 20:44

You don't know that the ones disputing a enforced lockdown are because of these reasons do you ?
Im fully supportive of them disputing a lockdown for those reasons. The rest of us should pull together to assist the more vulnerable and no lockdown should be implemented that doesnt support every member of society. Whether or not that will happen i have no idea.
But people just moaning they cant go the races or the footy. No. I know its a bit crap. But no.

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 20:45

This is the thread that keeps on giving it's hilarious.

1forsorrow · 15/03/2020 20:45

This just says coronavirus patients... what? the police are going to arrest you, test you, wait for the test results, then jail you?
As it is they're not testing anyone. This only applies to the roughly 2k people who are currently diagnosed as having it.

Presumably people who are diagnosed are pretty ill or they won't be diagnosed. They probably won't feel like going out and if they are ill the police probably won't want to get too close anyway.

Tulipstulips · 15/03/2020 20:46

And yes, I don’t think it’s likely. But to say it’s not possible is showing shocking ignorance of recent history, both here and in the rest of the world.

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/03/2020 20:47

The legislation is already in place to allow them to forceably quarantine anyone who doesn't follow the rules - with force if necessary. It was passed weeks ago.

JinglingHellsBells · 15/03/2020 20:47

I think when people see the number of deaths, maybe affecting their own families and friends, they will comply.

At the moment it's all just a bit too distant.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 15/03/2020 20:48

...Too rebellious?!?!? PMSL. We cannot even jump a bloody queue! Grin
