Because we are too rebellious. I cannot envisage people staying indoors for any length of time

genevieva I would love it if they could make a load more for 2 weeks time. They melted down railings for ammo Im guessing in the UK? Bit more of a blunt tool.

I can’t explain just how complex even the simplest of ventilators is. It has to be able to 8interface with other NHS equipment, deliver and monitor pressures in airways as well as volumes and flow of air. It would have to be relatively standardised to those already in use to be able to be used effectivey.

That’s not going to happen in 2 weeks.

No one has managed it yet for the common cold because it mutates so quickly

Just as an aside, there are more than 100 viruses that cause the common cold - I think four are coronaviruses and the rest are rhinoviruses. That’s the major reason there’s no vaccine for the common cold. There’s one coronavirus that causes Covid19 so it’s not impossible to make a vaccine, and it would be perfectly effective provided it doesn’t mutate in the next year or so. Influenza does mutate quite readily but the lack of a vaccine for the common cold and influenza virus’ propensity to mutate doesn’t mean we won’t get a vaccine for the coronavirus that causes Covid19.

I'm not in the uk.
If you asked me to come up with a word to describe the uk, rebelious isn't the first thing to spring to mind. If everyone else can do it so can you.

JaggedHedge · 15/03/2020 21:51

Panic buying is not a good example of British people behaving differently to any other nation.

I lived in Italy when the coalition forces went into Kuwait, and within half a day the supermarkets were emptied of flour and bread.

Goodness knows what people thought was going to happen and I found it hugely amusing as a student, but I now realise that in 1991, many people still had memories of war and it's deprivations.

People will stay in when they have to.

BirdandSparrow · 15/03/2020 21:52

Why on earth would your cat get shot? I mean, seriously?

@isabellerossignol here in Spain one of the things people can go out for is to attend to/help elderly relatives.

Dentists and mechanics are all shut. If it were a dental emergency you'd call one of the helplines and they'd direct you to hospital or whatever. But basically, you go to work, buy food, get medical supplies and that's it.

turdtimelucky · 15/03/2020 21:55

British wouldn't be rule breakers in my mind anyway. Very conformist.

Bearbehind · 15/03/2020 21:55

Now you’re just arguing for the sake of it.

How do you reach that conclusion?

I’m not one of the ones saying that dog walking supersedes all other regulations?

People need to understand that things are going to get difficult.

Have you read the posts from people in Italy and France who say they have to have a note to explain why they are out of the house?

That was unthinkable 2 weeks ago

JustaScratch · 15/03/2020 21:56

I'm in eastern Spain. One of you at a time can go out to get food or walk the dog, but DH had to wear protective gloves before they let him into the shop earlier and everyone had to stand a metre apart. You can't go for a bike ride or a jog or take your baby out in the buggy. You can't go out anywhere as a family. Police are patrolling the streets and fining people who do not have a legitimate reason to be out.

generalexpert · 15/03/2020 21:56

I live in Northern Italy and people are not getting arrested for being out.

There is a self declaration form which you need to fill in if the police ask.

You can still walk the dog and go for a run. I've been at work all week.

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 21:56

I'm sorry I couldn't help myself it was too easy .

UYScuti · 15/03/2020 21:57
big ole fuck up here, not much social distancing going on in US airportShock
turdtimelucky · 15/03/2020 21:58

Problem is, nobody has told the British what to do, so they're like headless chickens. They need rules. They'll have no problem following rules. Problem is, they've not been told what to do so they went mental and bought bog roll. In the absence of clear direction, it was all they could think of to do. In fairness, nobody wants to get caught short.

Alsohuman · 15/03/2020 21:59

I thought that would be the case generalexpert.

nettie434 · 15/03/2020 22:00

Panic buying is not a good example of British people behaving differently to any other nation.

Absolutely. There are similar photos of shoppers buying vast quantities of goods in Australia and the US. However, I do agree it will be harder to enforce here.

Pluckedpencil · 15/03/2020 22:00

The uk? Rebellious?! Don't make laugh. Ever seen a Frenchman strike? Ever met anyone from Naples? The very reason they are in lockdown is because they're rebellious! Don't be confused. You're under house arrest! There is no one on the street. My upstairs neighbour is a vigile (street police warden) and I overheard her say "punish one to teach a hundred". They fine you, they have the power to incarcerate you.

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 22:01

If you asked me to come up with a word to describe the uk, rebelious isn't the first thing to spring to mind

Sadly, I AM in the UK, and I agree. The word I'm thinking of is much less complimentary...

The U.K. police have been given the ok to arrest anyone with corona virus out in public or so my dh said

Fucking hell. There’s so much wrong with this, mainly being the police aren’t medical professionals

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 22:03

However, I do agree it will be harder to enforce here.

How so? We have a police force and armed forces the same as Italy/ Spain etc - how are we a special case?

turdtimelucky · 15/03/2020 22:03

Compliant is a word for the British. An obedient sort. Not an independent thought among them.

Alsohuman · 15/03/2020 22:03

Good thing it isn’t true.

LeeMiller · 15/03/2020 22:04

@isabellerossignol in the Italian lockdown, going to care for relatives or take them shopping/medication is on the acceptable reasons to be out list (a social visit to family isn't).

Also you can shop more than once a week (though you're encouraged to go as little as possible), and there aren't shortages of anything other than hand gel.

Ugzbugz · 15/03/2020 22:05

They wont lock down the UK, they dont care that much, all that lost revenue and tax will kill them let alone divide 19

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 22:06

How are the police, or anyone else, supposed to know who has COVID-19 if we're not testing?

turdtimelucky · 15/03/2020 22:07

You're allowed out. Don't be worrying yourself.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 15/03/2020 22:07

Read the legislation in the link posted a few pages back.

Also, note it was passed nearly a month ago when this was a lot less prevalent. The government knew this was coming.
