Who is carrying on as normal/going out and about and sticking to plans?

There seems to be a real divide.
Among my friends, ,many are staying put, cancelling plans and hunkering down for the next week and waiting to see how the land lies.
The other half are still of the 'pfff it's going to blow over' camp and are merrily talking about their trip to thailand and making plans for summer bbqs.

It's really unnerving. I flip between being utterly terrified to that reading about Nadine Dorries who seems to be recovering well, and hoping it's not going to be as bad as I expect.

As normal here which isn't all that social anyway. We both work from home and spend most of our weekends on a hike or walk in the countryside away from people. Cupboards have plenty of food for us for a couple of weeks but I wouldn't hold off shopping for more if I needed to.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/03/2020 21:05

Carrying on fairly normal here but I don't have much on at the moment anyway. Took DS to a swimming lesson today then the supermarket but we've spent the majority of the weekend at home.

I'm going over to a friend's house next weekend but we are staying in.

I have to go to work anyway and use public transport as I don't own a car so I've resigned myself to catching it at some point. DS are I will not be visiting my grandfather at the moment who is 78 years old.

We are booked to go to Butlins at Easter and I'm hoping it gets closed before then and I can get a refund.

Twasbambam · 15/03/2020 21:07

Are all the 'would prefer to get it sooner rather than later' camp not aware of the current fears about long term damage to survivors, even those who have had it mildly?

Only a third of cases worldwide have been resolved, and there are many worrying questions about the health of some of those survivors. Infertility in males? Life limiting respiratory issues? None of this ringing any bells?

FamBae · 15/03/2020 21:08

Intrepid have emailed me today to inform me that they have postponed all of their tours of Vietnam, we had planned to travel at Easter but had decided to cancel and shoulder the cost, luckily we decided we would wait and see how they reacted. Went into town today to meet DS for lunch (mercy dash as he's having marital problems) large extremely busy A road almost empty, as was M25 but local footie teams out in force, seems you can't keep South London away from its football. It seems to me that your dammed if you do and dammed if you don't, you're a selfish so and so if you stockpile food, and a serial killer if you go to the shops.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/03/2020 21:10

Keeping on as normal as possible.
DS's ASD anxiety is really playing up, volatile mood, meltdowns, constant nausea and frequent hair chewing. As much normality and outside as possible is essential for us, body and soul.

We're not making physical contact with elderly relatives, but phoning more frequently.

Potkettlexx · 15/03/2020 21:12

Carrying on as normal for now.

MadamePewter · 15/03/2020 21:13

Carrying on as normal until the expected lockdown happens. Dreading that.

Leithwalk · 15/03/2020 21:15

Making changes in my personal life, can't in my professional life which is business as usual.

I've just returned from Europe, so I've not visited my parents. We've not socialised, including the gym. We have shopped because we had no food in post trip. We did go for a walk today. We are hand washing over and over and I've cleaned door handles, bleached the dish cloth, sprayed taps and sinks regularly etc.

I'm back at work tomorrow - working with two schools, so amongst 800 children and up to 100 staff.
Feels bizarre tbh - careful and trying to be sensible and controlled in my home life yet no choice tomorrow in my professional one!

PanicAndRun · 15/03/2020 21:17

Carrying on as normal. All three of us are fairly healthy and no underlying conditions. We're fairly antisocial so it's just work/school and do stuff at the weekends. My family are in another country and OH is NC with his so no older people we are regularly in contact with. DD has two playdates next week and a group and atm they're still going ahead.

MrsJBaptiste · 15/03/2020 21:18

Definitely carrying on as normal. I'm not stupidly oblivious as to what's going on but want to get out as much as I can before I may not beable to any more.

Went to the gym this morning and just got in from seeing family at the pub. Tomorrow is another day...

scarbados · 15/03/2020 21:20

I'm going out less than usual but I'm in a high risk group and I'm retired so I can pretty much decide to stay home. My husband is still working but is walking to work now instead of using public transport. At present I'm doing an early morning supermarket trip while it's still very quiet, partly to keep the cupboards topped up but also because I need the exercise to stop my mobility problem becoming worse.

We're monitoring the local situation which is so far not bad and will adjust as necessary.

DurhamDurham · 15/03/2020 21:21

I'm carrying on as normal, I was out with sister having a meal and a few drinks on Saturday and spent this afternoon at Miller & Carter with husband, children and granddaughter. We're all off to work or nursery tomorrow, one daughter is a nurse and she has to carry on, she's busier than ever. Several of us may be able to work from home as we tend to do that a few times a month. That should hopefully ease the pressure if and when our granddaughter's nursery closes. I think it's too early to go into unofficial lock down, we're facing months of this. I'll start staying home when I'm told I legally have to.

Canshopwillshop · 15/03/2020 21:29

@Twasbambam - oh stop it! I know there have been rumblings about it but they have zero evidence of any long term effects of this brand new virus. They are still trying to understand the basics like if you’re immune once you’ve had it etc

simonisnotme · 15/03/2020 21:32

me, DH and an awful lot of other people in Ikea this morning all pottering about buying and looking at stuff and eating in the cafe

copycopypaste · 15/03/2020 21:32

I'm carrying on as normal. It's not that I think 'pft it'll all blow over' but I'm still going to work, my kids will continue to go to school and I'll continue to follow gov guidelines.

I was talking to a nurse today and I asked her if anything had changed at work, she laughed and said, she have to deal with the likes of hepatitis and aids, so a flu like virus didn't phase her.

weegiemum · 15/03/2020 21:37

Carrying on as normal here. I'm disabled so don't get out much anyway, dh is a GP so doesn't have a lot of choice, even if he caught it he'd be working the phones from home.

Ds and dd2 at school as normal tomorrow, both have exams coming up and can't afford to miss anything.

Dd1 lives away now and is self isolating as she has all the symptoms, not sure how it's going to affect her uni work. She works in a bar/restaurant so obviously can't do that for 7 days!!

TerrorWig · 15/03/2020 21:49

I'm sort of carrying on as normal here. Children going to school, and I went out and did a very big shop yesterday in case we can't get out next week.

However, I am lucky that I can work from home, so I will be doing that unless required on site (which is unlikely). I have also accepted a birthday party invitation but the mum has been texting tonight, she's not sure if she should go ahead.

My two eldest are supposed to be going on a week's residential in a couple of months. Don't know what is going to happen there.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 15/03/2020 21:50

Yes I've heard the rumblings of permanent damage, but it's a virus it'll rear it's ugly head year after year. I'd rather get it in my 30s when Im fit and healthy and build up some natural immunity than get it in my 60s.
As it is I've never had chicken pox and if I get it now, or when older or when I was pregnant it could have very serious consequences, I would much rather I had had it as a child when the risks were less

Tistheseason17 · 15/03/2020 21:55

I work for the NHS and have a chronic disease. I'm going in to work but taking precautions. Plenty of collagues are phoning in sick out of fear so please don't be surprised when you have to wait on hold when phoning the NHS... it's only going to get harder.

MinesaPinot · 15/03/2020 21:56

HarrySnotter I would do that of course and will, provided I can get a slot and she doesn't have to wait long

MasakaBuzz · 15/03/2020 21:56

I live alone. Most of my social life is via dog owning friends. I also have mobility difficulties. I am on the waiting list for a knee replacement. I will also need both hips and the other knee doing. I started a lot of mobility exercises in Jan in preparation. Given there is going to be an even greater delay in the opps I need to keep moving. have lots of things planned this year, that I wanted to get in before I start operations. I am not convinced many of them will actually happen.

I have two trips to London at the end of this months. 1 to see the Tutankhamun exhibition. If the trips are still on I will go, but I don’t think there is a cats chance in hell of them being run.

I am also due to go to Northumberland in June, have the overnight at The Natural History Museum booked for July, and want to do a Greenland Cruise in August. Hoping some of them might happen.

Locally various things I am involved in have been halted. Most of them involve older people, so understandable.

I have got sufficient food stores for a couple of weeks. I have also been rigorous about proper hand washing since this began.

I am worried, but I am also quite fatalistic.

The oddest thing is the fact I have the live score app on my phone for sports. There is nothing on it. Feels really weird.

SweetMarmalade · 15/03/2020 22:16

I’ve got to go to work tomorrow, Ds has to go to school, so essentially yes, I’ve got to carry on as normal until told otherwise!

The peak of this virus might not happen for 2-3 months yet, lockdown too early and unless you police people to stay in their homes, it’s not going to work!

Springbubble912 · 15/03/2020 22:16

We went out to eat last night - restaurant still pretty busy - tables further apart than normal

Went into local town today which was very quiet ! We let the kids spend some of their savings on Lego in the toy shop .

Their staff need a wage coming in too

HarrySnotter · 15/03/2020 22:33

This thread really does highlight that so many people really don't give a shit about others more vulnerable than they are.

MadamePewter · 15/03/2020 22:35

@HarrySnotter does that include people who will have no job and no income if people don’t go out?
