Does anyone else have no hand gel?

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/03/2020 10:46

I had 2 small bottles, which I gave to my mum (in her 70s, health conditions) as she was worried that she couldn't buy any. I haven't had any since (about 2 weeks ago).

I'm not really concerned by this, I have loads of soap so am 2ashing hands proper and regularly.

There are dispensers at work so I can use gel/foam there.

Am I missing something? Should I be trying to buy some?

I live rurally, shop online. So only really would need it at work I think.

I’m not bothering - only because I have really sensitive hands, as does one of my kids and hand gel seems to really hurt. So we are hand washing lots and using diprobase or similar afterwards. (Hands seems to be okay so far...)

InconvenientPeg · 15/03/2020 10:51

We have a bottle because dh has always used it when he's out on sales calls. I suspect it's not 60% alcohol because I can't find any info on it anywhere.

The only person using it, is Ds because secondary school is grim.

The rest of us are trying not touch our faces and washing our hands whenever there"s an opportunity. I wouldn't bother to try to get any if I were you. We have agreed that we won't bother. We don't really need it in our situation, and potentially are fighting someone who does need it for a scarce resource.

I have soap and water. Hand gel really leads people into a false sense of security.

dementedpixie · 15/03/2020 10:58

I havent seen any in the shops. I have 2 small bottles I bought for going on holiday last year that never got used. I go to the gym so it's handy there after handling equipment that others have touched too.

Ideally my kids should have some for school as there arent hand washing facilities for 900 pupils at a time

Alwaysreadyforbed · 15/03/2020 10:59

I don’t. Don’t need it

Guttersnipe · 15/03/2020 11:01

I never use the stuff anyway, good old fashioned bar soap has always been good enough for me.

But I understand people's frustration if they want to buy the stuff because it is as rare as loo paper in the shops round here, and loo paper is something I definitely do use!

NotDisclosedToday · 15/03/2020 11:03

No. I just use soap and water when needed.

Ginfordinner · 15/03/2020 11:04

I don't need it because I have access to soap and water. I leave it for people who need it.

I agree that many people are being led into a false sense of security.

Oblomov20 · 15/03/2020 11:07

I've never used it. So am missing nothing.

Namelesswonder · 15/03/2020 11:07

I don’t have any (maybe because I didn’t panic buy?), soap and water will do fine

Uhtredswoman · 15/03/2020 11:10

I have some for DD as she has her arm in a cast so can't properly wash her hands. Hope it will last the two weeks she has left before the cast comes off (if the hospitals aren't closed for non-emergencies!).

EmmaC78 · 15/03/2020 11:11

Just soap and water for me too.

AlinaSquareQueen · 15/03/2020 11:12

I’m relieved to see I’m not the only one without any hand gel!

At home, I just wash my hands loads with bar soap and water. I also happened to have some liquid anti-bacterial soap and a refill, which I’m trying to be frugal with, as it will probably be impossible to replace.

At work (school) I use their foam soap dispensers to wash my hands.

I’ve tried to limit lending out pens/pencils to students but sadly for some of them, school equipment is not a priority in their household.

firstimemamma · 15/03/2020 11:14

I've got 2 and a half little hand gels and that's it. Not really concerned. I'm a soap and water girl and lots of places I go to have large hand gels for people to use anyway.

We have it at work but at home just soap and water. I've used soap for years so always have a couple of bars at home.....

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 15/03/2020 11:17

I don't have any. It's not something I have in the house usually and by the time the sales of it went crazy it was too late to buy some.

Campervan69 · 15/03/2020 11:18

I never use it. But have been in all the cupboards getting all our stock of bar soap out. We have loads and I prefer it to hand wash. I think you give your hands a better clean. All of a sudden all that hand cream I never used is coming into its own as well.

sarahC40 · 15/03/2020 11:27

Asked at school if we could have handgel for classrooms...there is none. Asked if we could have tissues for catch it, bin it, kill it message to be effective...there were hardly any in school. Asked if we could send kids out in lessons to wash their hands...no we don’t want them wandering around. Gave out tissues from the own home stock to kids and told them ALL the time to wash their hands...didn’t go in. School is germy.

SnickettyLemon · 15/03/2020 11:30

I have one small handbag sized bottle provided from work due to the job I do, but it isn't even an alcohol based one. I have laughed at the signs in supermarkets and chemists saying 'we are rationing them to 2 per customer ' I haven't actually seen any in a shop for over 2 weeks , so chance would be a fine thing! I have loads of alcohol based lens wipes which I have used on minging supermarket trolley handles, but am unsure how affective they are.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 15/03/2020 11:36

I don’t have any and there are none in the shops.
DH is high risk
My skin is splitting on my hands I’m washing them so much.

Sennedd · 15/03/2020 11:38

I have given mine to my grandchildren to use at school and to my policeman son. We haven’t got any and are using soap and water. The police are advised to carry hand sanitizer but it is not standard issue. If they get blood on them during an incident they are supposed to use hand sanitizer ASAP. Fine if you can find any to buy!

TheGinGenie · 15/03/2020 11:41

I haven't used any and I don't intend to. I am washing my hands thoroughly instead. I only ever use hand sanitiser if there's no way to wash my hands.

Fatted · 15/03/2020 11:43

Don't have any. Never use it anyway. We're using soap and water.

At work, our supplies of handgel are being given to officers on the front line (police) because they don't have access to soap and water.

You need to be using one that is 60% alcohol for it to be effective apparently. It's better to use soap and water, but hand gel is a good alternative when that isn't available.

GenderApostate19 · 15/03/2020 11:47

You dont NEED hand gel. Even when out and about.
Just get some dettol/milton/zoflora, soak a hankie/cloth etc. in a solution, Put in a ziplock bag and use that, it’s fine for 24 hours then change it daily.
For people worried about hands drying out with constant washing, I bought some Mastiha gel cleanser back from Greece (available online) , I’ve been using it for a few days and my hands aren’t dry at all.
Olive oil soap is good too, unfortunately I’m down to my last holiday purchase, but again there are lots of nice hand made soaps available online and I’d rather give my money to small businesses at this time.
