Does anyone else have no hand gel?

I had 2 small bottles, which I gave to my mum (in her 70s, health conditions) as she was worried that she couldn't buy any. I haven't had any since (about 2 weeks ago).

I'm not really concerned by this, I have loads of soap so am 2ashing hands proper and regularly.

There are dispensers at work so I can use gel/foam there.

Am I missing something? Should I be trying to buy some?

I live rurally, shop online. So only really would need it at work I think.

My husband has a bottle for work (he works in a supermarket and it is grim) but only because I am at risk group he wouldn't bother otherwise. I have a bottle for when I pick dd2 up from school, she is reception and they too are grim! 😂

I think if you can wash your hands regularly with soap and water and are generally healthy you should be fine.

WE are given lots from work, anyway because of some of the environments we have to go in. I use soap and water most of the time but do use gel in higher risk settings- trains, airports, planes, other public places as I don’t trust majority of public to have washed hands properly at the best of times.

Skeeter2020 · 15/03/2020 12:42

You can make your own if you think you might need - there are loads of guides to doing this online

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 12:43

I haven’t and won’t buy

Soap and water works on viruses and hand gels don’t

Simple really

Seeline · 15/03/2020 12:45

I had a couple of small bottles from last year's holiday. I can't find any to replace. Both DCs and DH have to use London public transport which really isn't clean, and the chance of washing hands mid-journey is nil. Schools don't have hot water, and often don't have soap. One has emailed to say they can't get any sanitizer.

lentenwonder · 15/03/2020 12:45

I can’t understand the obsession with gel, hand washing is more effective.

Oxyiz · 15/03/2020 12:48

Alcohol works on viruses. Gels with over 70% alcohol will work. But it needs super high alcohol content.

I miss it being available, I use it regularly anyway and now it's gone, its unnerving.

lentenwonder · 15/03/2020 12:49

So if you can find surgical spirit etc?

tinytemper66 · 15/03/2020 12:52

We have none but will wash hands regularly instead.

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/03/2020 13:08

Well I'm glad it's not just me. I have a huge supply if bar soap as I make my own, so wouldn't run out for a very long time.

I found one bottle out that expired in 2012. So no, I have none !

MiniMinion · 15/03/2020 13:24

@Uhtredswoman as an aside, if your hospital is closed to non-emergencies you can soak a cast off at home. Obviously you'd be doing this at your own risk regarding the break being properly healed.

Hand sanitiser - I'd like some as I work with teenagers and some aren't too great on hygiene, and we've limited access to washing hands. But I haven't found any so I'm just washing as much as I can.

JudyCoolibar · 15/03/2020 13:27

We don't. Soap and water are better anyway, and we have plenty of access to those.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 15/03/2020 13:27

Can't use it due to eczema I use Germolene instead whenever I would have used gel (it's antiseptic at least)
When creche where I work in Ireland was still open I used latex free gloves then hand sanitized them as required 😏

I expect stocks will be replenished eventually 🤷‍♀️

Uhtredswoman · 15/03/2020 13:30

Thanks @MiniMinion that is good to know!

milkysmum · 15/03/2020 13:40

I manage a care home. We are meant to have a bottle for people to use as they enter the building, can we buy any at present? No of course we can't...
