Does anyone else have no hand gel?

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/03/2020 10:46

I had 2 small bottles, which I gave to my mum (in her 70s, health conditions) as she was worried that she couldn't buy any. I haven't had any since (about 2 weeks ago).

I'm not really concerned by this, I have loads of soap so am 2ashing hands proper and regularly.

There are dispensers at work so I can use gel/foam there.

Am I missing something? Should I be trying to buy some?

I live rurally, shop online. So only really would need it at work I think.

No don't have any and not looking for it either. Soap and water for me. Mum and sister have so.e but they always have it.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 15/03/2020 11:54

I’m just using regular soap and water as often as practical. That said, our supermarket had no soap at all last night. (Nor loo roll, eggs, flour, pasta, sauces, beans, etc)

thenightfury · 15/03/2020 11:56

I only have some to use at work because I work in a customer facing role (retail) and have to handle banknotes very regularly. I can't wash my hands as often as I'd like in work cos I'm dealing with customers. But I used it anyway. Haven't bought anymore since this whole thing started

Jenasaurus · 15/03/2020 11:56

M&S have some, they are restricting to one bottle per customer but my son got a bottle just now and messaged me.

DontCallMeShitley · 15/03/2020 11:56

I don't have any. I hate it because it makes my hands sticky and most times it reeks of perfume. I also don't feel that I need it as much as many people so haven't rushed to buy any.

However, I do live with someone that uses it so have ordered stuff to make it. It might be a waste of money though if we have to stop going into London. In which case I may give it to someone that needs it, like the retirement village (if it actually arrives).

Never used hand gel, soap and water is my jam.

statetrooperstacey · 15/03/2020 12:04

I have no hand gel and I have no access to any soap or water whilst out at work, or toilets. . So I could probably really do with some! I also touch loads of stuff and see lots of people. My work gave me 2x tiny alcohol free wet wipes on sat😂 not 2 packs, 2 tiny kfc type ones🙄

TotesAwks · 15/03/2020 12:04

No I don't have any either. I've just been shopping and felt guilty for just buying hand wash even though we genuinely need it because it's about to run out. I didn't bother to even look for gel because the shelves were empty of everything else. It was carnage!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/03/2020 12:08

I commute on trains and buses so use hand gel for that, but prefer soap and water if available

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 15/03/2020 12:09

I have a couple of small bottles knocking about from pre-Covid but I don’t use it often. I wash my hands with soap and water.

DirtyDancing · 15/03/2020 12:17

I have posted on here a couple of times. Friend has a family business, UK based cosmetics and toiletries company. They have made 1,000 alcohol based hand gels. Due to go on sale end of this week. Around £3 each (TBC, definitely won’t be more). Happy to send info to anyone when it goes on sale. Via DM. Thanks

DirtyDancing · 15/03/2020 12:18

But to add... soap and water when at home is the best. Gel is good for trips to supermarket.

Talulahoopla · 15/03/2020 12:20

My sister is a nurse and she assured me there's no need for gel. Just wash your hands with regular soap and water and that's all you can do.

Lucked · 15/03/2020 12:22

I have a couple of tiny bottles which we have in from our last holidays as I have always upped our hand hygiene when travelling through airports.

I am using it sparingly mostly if I have to use a tissue out of the house. Wearing wollen gloves more.

Likefootball · 15/03/2020 12:22

Hasn't occurred to me that this is something I need.
Washing hands well with soap and water.

Absentwomen · 15/03/2020 12:27

Ran put as always had it in to take on dog walks after scooping. But now using good old fashioned soap which my DP has always used. I think hand gel is good for children.

SilverySurfer · 15/03/2020 12:34

No and have never bought hand gel so don't miss it. Soap and water for me.

PanicAtTheTesco · 15/03/2020 12:34

I have a half-used bottle somewhere in the car for dire emergencies. It really is second best to handwashing. I visit a few hospitals in the course of my work, and the top-rated one doesn't have hand sanitiser, just well-equipped sinks at the door and signs to use them.

Scruffyoak · 15/03/2020 12:35

I have sone but dont use it as its hurt my hands so badly. I am going to donate it to the school or something. I just use soap now as soon as I can.

Ginfilledcats · 15/03/2020 12:36

Clue is in the name: antibacterial. Bacterial. Covid 19 is a virus.

Also no one ever fully cleans their hands properly using gel as it evaporates too quickly! Much better off with soap and water.

For the millionth time

Scruffyoak · 15/03/2020 12:37

A company local to me is selling some but its only 50% alcohol based.

LimitIsUp · 15/03/2020 12:37

I don't have it and can't get hold of any. I personally don't need it given easy and constant access to soap and water, but it would be beneficial to my two teens to have it (long journeys to school and college on public transport, and not always able to pop to school / college loos more than a couple of times in the day), and also for my dh to have it (in and out of different clients houses).

geojojo · 15/03/2020 12:38

No, I've never used it and not even tried to get it. I have been looking for paracetamol for the past few days though and only managed to get a pack today.

LimitIsUp · 15/03/2020 12:40

Ginfilledcats

Yes, most of us are aware that soap and water is better but the right strength hand gel is a good alternative when hand washing isn't practicable ... for the millionth time

Sunflower20 · 15/03/2020 12:40

Proper hand washing, all the way. So many people just don't wash their hands normally.
