Omg. The next step in the strategy. And if we all stick together it may work

Next step in UK strategy. Lock down all the over 70s (and other immunocompromised - kids / adults) for 4 months. Lock them down. Then make it illegal to close schools. That means we gain immunity to the virus as a population and keeps the beds open for the unusual cases that are not foreseen.

Also if they make it illegal to shut down schools, I can imagine staff sickness will soar. Why should teachers with underlying conditions put themselves at serious risk? There will also be a lot of kids and staff off genuinely sick. And I have already heard that getting cover is almost impossible.
If you want to get essential workers on your side, this is not the way to do it.

Lunde · 15/03/2020 02:22

Is "herd immunity" even possible for this virus? Do we know enough about it to predict? The have been reports from China of people getting the virus more than once

What if Coronavirus acts more like influenza and mutates into different strains?

Pixxie7 · 15/03/2020 02:32

It seems that a lot of people are doing their own thing anyway which rather makes any government plans void.

AngelicaKauffman · 15/03/2020 02:37

Link?

Shinesweetfreedom · 15/03/2020 03:09

Angelica
I have heard this but have not got a link.
Those that were released in China recovered then caught a mutated strain of the virus

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/03/2020 04:24

So let me get this right. David Cameron, backed up against the wall by a bunch of sociopaths, psychopaths and narcissists (am talking politicians), called an EU election to save the tories. Boris Johnson, who I suspect is a sociopath backed leave to become prime minister. Now he’s prepared to destroy his party for his Brexit vanity project and kill hundreds of thousands in the process. Fantastic. Put me down as a yes.... obviously. 🙄

Bluewavescrashing · 15/03/2020 05:56

Try telling stubborn elderly folk to stay indoors. They won't! Who will police them?

Marilynmansonsothereye · 15/03/2020 05:59

I'm petrified. Is that irrational?

LightAsTheBreeze · 15/03/2020 06:09

Last week everyone was saying that the schools were all going to close but they didn't, maybe wait until it is actually announced before starting a thread.

daisypond · 15/03/2020 06:15

There isn’t time for a generational change like that against drink driving or non-compliance with seat belts. If they catch the virus, many will die - because treatment will be rationed. I’ve been begging my elderly parents to take this seriously for days.

Bool · 15/03/2020 06:16

@Bluewavescrashing maybe some vulnerable people won’t protect themselves for 4 month. Then they take that risk. Nobody will police them and force them. But if enough of the vulnerable do this then we may well be able to take the pressure off the health system to be able to get through this as intact as possible. What if Boris were to get the queen to address the nation. She also goes into isolation for 4 months. And she asks as many vulnerable people as possible to do the same. There are no perfect solutions to this crisis.

It’s so odd that people are wanting total lockdown for everyone and the government isn’t doing enough - but when the proposal is for a partial lockdown of the most vulnerable in society then there are cries of ‘how will we make that work’. I don’t get it.

OP posts:
EerieSilence · 15/03/2020 06:22

@Marilynmansonsothereye
I think we all have the right to be petrified.
No, it’s not Black Death with mortality rate of over 50% for the bubonic plague only. But still, people can die and are dying.
This is the first world pandemic in the living memory of current generations. It’s scary, it’s something we’re not used to.
In the past, diseases were someone else’s problem. We put down Ebola to habits and bad healthcare in African countries, duly contributed to charities and walked away, glad it wasn’t us, dying and drowning in our own blood.
SARS , which is Covid’s older cousin was spreading due to China’s overcrowding.
Suddenly, Covid is here and has a very direct impact on our lives.
And we’re afraid. Statistically, my close family should be fine. Healthy, fit, young. But you can still see your child or husband becoming the 0.x something %. I worry for my mother who is 68 and asthmatic and stubborn as a mule. Nothing will make her stay indoors, she’d rather be shot. I worry for my elderly neighbours who were the family we didn’t have where we live.
It is normal to worry and be scared. But human kind coped and went through worse and survived. Nature has tested our stubbornness and will to survive many times.
We need to do whatever is needed and hope for the best, follow basic hygiene rules, avoid crowds and care for the more vulnerable.

Bool · 15/03/2020 06:28

@Marilynmansonsothereye me too. Having to relax my breathing. I think there will be a lot of people feeling the same.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 15/03/2020 06:30

I think the people who are against the idea are the ones who use the grandparents for babysitting

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/03/2020 06:38

But are they even sure it will cause an protective immune response?
It’s been around for 3 months so they don’t actually know that much about it.

Sadly it seems more of a money saving view both in the cost of care of the sick and the cost of govt pensions.

LightAsTheBreeze · 15/03/2020 06:39

The reason that people wanted total lockdown was to protect and have control over their children so selfish reasons really, you can't have the same control over your 80 year old parents. Most the stuff with total lockdown was me, me, me, and no thought for anyone else beyond the small family unit.

Monstermummymum · 15/03/2020 06:42

Schools will have to close if there are not enough staff members left. If whole familes have to isolate when one member is sick then there will be a lot of staff off. Throw in anyone with underlying health conditions and schools will have staff shortages. I don't see them being able to stay open for the next four months.

EerieSilence · 15/03/2020 06:43

@Alwaysreadyforbed - I think the idea is bollocks and full of logical holes and no member of my family ever minded my daughter, especially as they live some thousand miles away.
Please stop spouting utter bullshit.

Bool · 15/03/2020 06:48

@EerieSilence the reason this may work is because it relies on the majority to see sense and just do it. There will always be some of the vulnerable that will flout it. Hopefully they will be ok. Who knows?

OP posts:
Bool · 15/03/2020 06:50

Ah seems the queen is being taken into isolation with Philip already. She will be there for 4-5 months and will ask the vulnerable to join her.

OP posts:
Bool · 15/03/2020 06:51

Ps that is my theory - that the queen will address the nation - not fact!

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 06:58

She’d be handy no doubt.

I reckon Johnson will do a similar hard line as last time. If you don’t do this your life is at risk because we cannot guarantee care. Or something like that, dialled up if need be.

Bool · 15/03/2020 06:59

He will put Stanley into lockdown too...
