I don’t like either Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson but I thought NS got it right with her press conference outlying the finding is the meeting and the plan for the foreseeable future. I didn’t agree with the outcome but I was a lot more reassured by her speech than I was by the wally BJ who waffled on with no real clarification or plan.

Are the schools likely to close, how soon do we think this will happen and for how long...

Surely if school closure is imminent the more time you can give people to put childcare, change of work plans, etc in place the better...

There is no planning with this one. Grandparents out of the equation for care, employers in the same boat as employees. Nurseries, schools also in same boat. We are re-writing the past daily

NellyGrace · 14/03/2020 13:57

I’ve just read on another thread and had read in the guardian last night that the government has pushed through a law to prevent schools from closing.

Is this true?

Devlesko · 14/03/2020 14:05

It may well be true, but I'm not sure.
They can only make decisions on state schools though. private/ boarding have other factors to consider so can choose for themselves.
I'm really stuck tbh, don't know what to decide.

Rosehip10 · 14/03/2020 14:11

Arlene Foster has said when NI schools close it will be for 16 weeks.

Littlemeadow123 · 14/03/2020 14:22

@neveradullmoment99

Not if they stayed home, which is the point of school closures, to limit how much time you spend in contact with others. Its not supposed to be used as an excuse for a holiday. Plus viruses blow over quicker if they are contained in certain areas, not spread about willy nilly by people going for an impromptu jolly.

wintertime6 · 14/03/2020 14:27

@Rosehip10 when did Arlene foster say about the 16 weeks?

Ricekrispie22 · 14/03/2020 14:48

With ROI and NI. I think the fact that you can have two schools a mile apart and one’s open and the other’s closed is a very confusing message for the public.

wintertime6 · 14/03/2020 14:57

@Rosehip10 I've just seen it in the news. I really wasn't expecting it would be for so long.

BeardedMum · 14/03/2020 15:02

I would like the option to keep my children at home. I don’t trust the governments line on this. A usually chilled out GP friend of mine has taken her son out of school last week.

Triggahippy · 14/03/2020 15:15

I work in a school. I am not hoping for a shut down as we have too many vulnerable kids who would really suffer if we did. I am trying to get in early to get hand washing stuff ready and going around after the cleaners to try and ensure the school is hygienic rather than clean. If we do close we will be providing lunch packs to our fSM kids daily so no doubt I’ll be in work. I’m hopeful we can push on and push through with the healthiest staff

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 14/03/2020 15:50

It is a crazy world we live in. OFSTED have on their website that if there are deaths at schools they will decide if the inspection goes ahead!!!!!

When do we think schools will shut and likely turn of closure.
bizzybuzzy · 14/03/2020 15:52

Ofsted are even more of a joke than I thought. utter dicks

Leithwalk · 14/03/2020 20:09

*There is no point closing schools unless you put all those children on complete lockdown.

Is that what you want? 12 weeks of children not leaving their front doors? Because that’s the logic*

I preference to my children, parents, family and friends dying - YES!

If Arlene says 16 weeks for NI it's because she's heard 16 weeks for the rest of the UK. As I suspected. Schools will close for the rest of the academic year once they do shut.

Overthegardenfence · 15/03/2020 01:22

My friends got a child at private school she’s been told they are closing on Friday.

Sucksfake1 · 15/03/2020 02:39

Already pulled DS who's 2 out nursery as of Thursday he's got serious lung problems would likely die.

The primary school my older healthy child is at is happy for her work to be done remotely given the circumstances. This was last Wednesday at parents evening I was told. Course it's her bloody sats year.

lilgreen · 15/03/2020 08:04

I can’t see schools closing for 16 weeks. Why not close for an extra few weeks attached to Easter and then see? Why all it nothing?

lilgreen · 15/03/2020 08:04

Or not it.

lilgreen · 15/03/2020 08:07

Boris said it would have to be 16 weeks and that was why he was reluctant, in his big speech the other day. Arlene is just repeating it.

BellsaRinging · 15/03/2020 08:09

I think they will close at the end of next week until after easter hols. However, if they combined that with total lock down it would work in that it would presumably really limit the spread. But they wont by the looks of it so I question the value if there are no other measures.

Greenpop21 · 15/03/2020 08:10

I work in a primary school. I’d be happy to extend the Easter break but why say we close for 16 weeks or we stay open? Why not say let’s clise for an extra fortnight and monitor the situation?
I’d like to see leisure flights stopped and vulnerable children and adults able to stay home without consequences before school closures.

Greenpop21 · 15/03/2020 08:12

I have a DD about to take GCSEs and one at university. I’m wondering if university closes next term, will we have to pay accommodation costs ? Tuition will likely be online but catered accommodation, I will not be happy to pay.

thetwinkletoescollective · 15/03/2020 08:22

I can see the closing for 16 weeks starting next Friday. It’s got to be prolonged to be effective. It can always be shortened if it becomes evident.

This is all guess work in my part but I guess the new law to force schools to open is because they are going to be some sort of hub in a societal effort. Eg forced to open for health care providers children, a place to co ordinate meals for free school meals ... not leaving that sort of thing to LA descretion buy government direction.
