When do we think schools will shut and likely turn of closure.

I don’t like either Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson but I thought NS got it right with her press conference outlying the finding is the meeting and the plan for the foreseeable future. I didn’t agree with the outcome but I was a lot more reassured by her speech than I was by the wally BJ who waffled on with no real clarification or plan.

Are the schools likely to close, how soon do we think this will happen and for how long...

Surely if school closure is imminent the more time you can give people to put childcare, change of work plans, etc in place the better...

I’m a teacher, the unions are ready for full on battle about schools closure being banned. It’s risking the health of school staff

lilgreen · 15/03/2020 08:43

Where is this news about banning the closing schools?

Vinylsamso · 15/03/2020 08:48

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince - what about all the other essential workers that have to go to work? Are teachers more important?
What about carers? Shall we send them all back to their families because it’s risking our health to work there?
What about the Doctors and Nurses that may treat you or your family? Best they go home too if you’re own health is the only priority. Don’t you agree?

Redwinestillfine · 15/03/2020 08:52

Another here who thinks they will wait a few weeks if they can and then close until September. I have ordered workbooks for my kids (although I hope school would also provide something). I will need to work from home, so they will have to have structure to their day or it won't work.

thetwinkletoescollective · 15/03/2020 08:59

It is often pitched why are teacher more of a priority to protect?

And I don’t think that the people are more or less valuable.

It is what is needed most. Healthcare professionals in a health crisis are essential.
Closing schools can help prevent healthcare problems and so closing schools is what is needed.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/03/2020 09:04

Because teachers are being exposed to a huge sea of infections. Kids carry the virus, but may not show symptoms. So teachers are being put in a unusually dangerous situation. Over 2000 people in my school. Only the staff pay proper attention to hygiene. Spit, saliva, bogies, sneezing, coughing, wiping noses/mouths on sleeves.. And then they change lesson every hour and spread it a bit more.

In terms of infections, schools are the most infectious places there are.

motherrunner · 15/03/2020 09:07

Also health care professions work in sterile conditions, are supplied with resources to help protect themselves. We are begging for soap to be replenished each day.

Butterwhy · 15/03/2020 09:11

That is wildly optimistic. We don't have access to basic PPE, let alone the clothing and equipment required for this, and many cleaners have had their hours reduced. A hospital as a whole isn't sterile. Add a shortage of hand sanitiser to the list as people keep stealing it.

reefedsail · 15/03/2020 09:51

As a teacher, I have no problem at all with being part of an organised effort to make sure people in essential jobs can get to work.

I do question whether a 'business as usual' approach is going to work in schools though.

I teach in SEN working with children who can be very violent. If we drop much below our usual ratios they would pose significant risk to one another and the staff. I should think most Special Schools would struggle to keep their pupils safe in one way or another on heavily reduced staff numbers. There needs to be some flexibility introduced so we can make workable decisions at least.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 09:57

Completely agree with you @TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

I don't think its right. Teachers, other staff are not being considered. But hey ho, the govt is happy to dump all the children into increased class sizes so they can babysit the children and increase the spread further. What happens when the teachers are too sick? Oh wait, cram them in the assembly hall and pop a video on. This is madness. I became a teacher. Not a babysitter of incubators.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 09:58

Maybe it helps to know that this is why they are not closing schools. They are hoping they spread it!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/03/2020 09:59

What happens if teachers die? The DFE will have put them in a dangerous situation.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:00

Just enough. After all the uk is a petrie dish set up with a non tried approach of herd immunity.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:01

We have already had the uni's saying that student teachers are not to come in!!!!

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:01

Its ok for them not to be there. There is a huge risk. Teachers are expected to suck it up.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:02

Absolutely @TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:03

Just shove all the kids together. Make the class sizes bigger....unbelievable.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:06

Read this. Take note of what it says about schools.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:13

neveradullmoment99 · 15/03/2020 10:13

That's weeks away!

ceeveebee · 15/03/2020 11:07

Our (state) school finishes on 27 March till 14 April, slightly earlier in our borough. I am fully expecting to finish next Friday for at least 4 weeks if not longer. Kids have already been given logins for online classroom (they’re in y3)
The private schools round here have the same dates as us, 2 weeks from 27 March

Letseatgrandma · 15/03/2020 11:09

Schools here all finish 3rd April.
