To be amazed at how many people are making excuses

Sunshinesky1981 · 13/03/2020 10:14

Looking through these threads I'm feeling pretty horrified at the amount of people that either dont seem to be able to understand what self isolate actually means or are already making excuses as to why it can't possibly apply to them ?!?
Have read so many.. oh I'm not going to self isolate, I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. Can I still go for a walk. I need to go out for a run or else I'd go crazy, how am i going to walk the dog, I'd only pop to the shop really quickly

No wonder the schools aren't shutting, and we are not banning gatherings. I really can't understand how people are either not getting this or feel happy to just think sod the risk

@ CoffeeHere yes I realise that now , can’t believe some people.

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 12:12

Yeah I don’t get it either.
People saying they’ll go for a walk because they never see anyone around, I bet they will now 😉 🤦🏼‍♀️

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 12:13

@Deathgrip People on carers or ESA will not just live on that amount. If there is no other household income they get other benefits.

Hugglespuffed · 13/03/2020 12:14

Right, in all seriousness, I think the new rules are ridiculous. I work in childcare. I get coughs all through winter time because it goes round in circles. When I get a cough it stays for 2 weeks at a time.
I'm happy to self isolate if that is what is being asked but then they need to step up with testing. People can't take that much time off work. I'd be off 2 weeks a month. I'd lose my job. They need to implement better guidelines.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 13/03/2020 12:16

Anger shouldn't be aimed at the individual, it should be aimed at lack of stable direction from the government.

There needs to be a straight talking definite action plan.

People are confused who needs to isolate and for how long for and how we can all recoup the costs as to not effect us all long term.

I'd happily stay indoors for two weeks if I had enough food in and sufficient guarantee that I can claim money NOW not in 5 weeks time to pay my bills.

HopefulFor2020 · 13/03/2020 12:16
  • I don't have a credit card and can't get one due to bad credit
  • I have no savings as I had to use that when I was receiving SSP for pregnancy related issues for 4 months
  • Because of the time off sick I'm not entitled to SMP and am still waiting for my Maternity Allowance decision so I can't take maternity leave early
  • My weekly food budget is lower than the minimum delivery and I can't afford to do 2 weeks at a time. Even if I could, what about perishable goods? Can't get a delivery slot for at least 5 days near me now anyway
  • I am 34 weeks into a high risk pregnancy so have lots of extra appointments with consultants etc and a home birth is too risky
  • I walk my dc to school. If I'm isolated he can't go to school even if he shows no symptoms (no, I don't have anyone close by who could take him and do you really think they would risk it if I was in isolation?)
  • I only get SSP if I'm off sick
  • If I only get SSP I am £300 pw down (reducing food budget even further!)
  • My landlord is an arse and won't accept a payment plan if I can't pay my rent (which even one week on SSP will leave me short for). He absolutely WILL start eviction proceedings as soon as possible
  • Even if that takes him months I won't get a reference and will not have a deposit for a new place until at least 6 weeks (took 3 months last time) after I move out and I can guarantee he'll hold that up for as long as possible (yes, I'm looking two move to get away from his tyranny)
  • I have no family or friends in a position to loan me money
  • I have reflux and one of the symptoms is a sodding cough!

If I have to self isolate my entire world would come crashing down! Worst case (other than dying from cv) I could end up homeless with my children in temporary care. So yes, I might actually risk someone else's life and be selfish if it really does come to it. I don't feel good about that and of course I will do it if I really have to but I'm not taking a week off work if the reflux cough comes back even if it is 'new' and 'persistent' OR if I get yet another UTI which raises my temperature

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/03/2020 12:16

This is why shutting down wouldn’t work. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exactly

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 12:17

I am so annoyed at how the media is acting right now, causing mass panic, and I am also annoyed at all the sheeple being stupid! Question thtings for dck sake. Why do you believe the media so blindly?*

FIW, I agree with you. And that the Earth is flat too.

Good luck!

IrisAtwood · 13/03/2020 12:19

@angell84 You took a wrong turn. Your bridge is that way ————>

Marlox · 13/03/2020 12:19

@Hopefulfor2020

Dont you then want to make sure that others around you arent deliberately at risk but ignoring advice?

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 13/03/2020 12:21

@Angell84 think about it. You are wrong. Congratulations for you that you are clearly low enough risk to not be worried about coronavirus.

Even if it is flu like that is very worrying because we don't have a vaccine. The flu season is very worrying to people in at risk groups every year and that is why the nhs offers vaccination. If we didn't have a flu vaccine lots of these very sick people would be dying from flu.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 13/03/2020 12:23

@HopefulFor2020 totally agree with you!

The vast majority of this country will be healthy enough to fight this off.

There is a minority who will have the worst case outcome.

However, getting told by people on here to just stop paying our mortgages, or asking landlords to let them not pay rent, don't pay council tax (pretty sure that's an offence still?) get all our food delivered
And just put the downfall on credits cards are the selfish ones.

Unfortunately death is inevitable in life.

otterturk · 13/03/2020 12:23

This is ridiculous. I am not going to stay at home until I absolutely have to. Until then I'm carrying on as usual (no symptoms).

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 12:25

There is NO point self isolating for one week once you get a cough. Coronavirus has a two week incubation period, for a start.

There is a point. There's a point to all of this.

The government want some people to get it, just not too many. Ultimately, they want 60% to get infected to create herd immunity. They are very clear on that. And everyone is expendable. They are very clear on that too. It's up to you what you want to do with that information.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/03/2020 12:25

That's such a weird post otterturk, can you find one solitary poster telling you that you should self isolate even though you have no symptoms?

otterturk · 13/03/2020 12:27

Erm I'm also not planning to stop expecting rent from my tenants. Jesus wept.

vickibee · 13/03/2020 12:27

It is easy to be sanctimonious when you are well off.
Most of the people I know live week to week so it will be bloody hard to manage financially without the back up of savings.
My DH is a decorator so he cant work from home and this applies to a lot of jobs.
Think the best thing would be to ask vulnerable groups to stay safe and let the well people develop mild symptons = herd immunity.Would this work?

SnoozyLou · 13/03/2020 12:28

If you self isolate for a week instead of 2, this cuts the time people are out of the labour force by 50%. You're also at your most contagious, they think, within the first 3 days of showing symptoms, so instead of everyone getting infected at once it drags it out a bit in the hope that the NHS won't be overwhelmed.

otterturk · 13/03/2020 12:28

@FourTeaFallOut

Apologies. I totally missed the point and thought it was everyone suggesting self isolating as in closing schools etc. In my defence I've had about two hours' sleep.

SilverDragonfly1 · 13/03/2020 12:32

Most people seem to be talking as though everyone will only need to self isolate once. If every cough is not being tested, that means everyone will need to isolate every time they get a cough or heavy cold. As a poster above points out, some people get coughs regularly- I'm one of them. So potentially we're not talking about missing one or two weeks wages and then no more issues. People could end up being expected to isolate multiple times this year and even for the better off this isn't sustainable. Even more of an issue if the whole family has to isolate each time one of them has a cough.

user1484 · 13/03/2020 12:33

My MIL, in her 70’s, has a cough and is going out for lunch with a friend today.
I’m sure they’ll go to church on Sunday too.
We’ve asked her to stay home but yes, she under the ‘it’s just a cold’ category.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/03/2020 12:34

aroundtheworldyet

It's not necessarily for one or two weeks though is it?

If I wake up with a cough tomorrow I will need to self isolate for 7 days, which I will do. No way of telling whether it was due to CV or not though so if in two weeks time I get another cough or a fever I'll have to isolate again for another seven days.

If a couple of months after that I get another cough, again another seven days or whatever it is by then. Once they start isolating all family members and for 14 days you can see how this will affect those worried about their finances.

mintcucumber · 13/03/2020 12:34

You’d almost think Boris wants the NHS to collapse when the inevitable happens.
Oh, wait...

SonjaMorgan · 13/03/2020 12:36

@IfYoureNotIntoYoga I am the lucky one. I have an amazing tenant who pays their rent making me money every month. I need them more than they need me. And with the way the economy is going I doubt the rental will retain its value. Lots of LL will be screwed in the near future.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/coronavirus-deaths-trump-stock-market-pandemic-economy-bankrupt-italy-a9394891.html lots of experts are predicting that the aftermath could be a bigger killer than the virus itself.
