@Wannabangbang this is what I don’t understand, how come footballers and presidents wives and celebrities getting tested when they aren’t in hospital/at risk?

I was to know this too.

I am so angry that other people’s countries are being given the chance to protect them and their families. The nature of our country, presenteeism and attendance means that bosses will do just as is mentioned upthread and demand we come in.

I am angry that there is one rule for famous/rich people and one for us with regards to testing.

It’s like we are fodder. A lab experiment for Boris to see how many of us die whilst he runs his little test with us carrying on as normal. These are our lives.

I found the part about cleaning the inside of our noses when washing hands and face before bed quite interesting hadn’t heard anything up until this article. No idea if it will help anyone but may be worth a read at least.

It makes sense.

Also, I have removed jewellery and my watch, for easier and better hand washing.

You have too much to do and need also to look after yourself, get your rest

I'd suggest that all DC sports and other extra-curricular activities are not essential and can be dropped

With all the extra demands on your time - and that extra care work sounds essential - you need also to gear yourself for a marathon, not a sprint

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2020 07:27

Tbf politicians are likely to be more at risk due to nature of job and the number of social interactions they have. Its particularly true of health ministers.

They are being diagnosed more though because they don't have to go through 111.

Health care workers are the highest risk group of getting covid-19. Followed by people who have a lot of interaction with health care providers. Then it's school related or more generally anyone who has a very high number of social interactions.

To a certain extent politician and professional sports people both have above average contact with hcps and large numbers of social interactions.

BiBiBirdie · 13/03/2020 07:28

But then, what can we do about it at this point?
If we do nothing, as it seems the government is doing, the virus spreads, 80% will probably get it, thousands probably already have and are clueless. It's easily transmittable. Are they going on the assumption that as it flies round it weakens? It does kill, we know this, that's one of few things confirmed that we know, and we know who the at risk groups are.
Are they waiting for it to prove fatal to a non-risk person? It did happen in China, with young doctors but was felt that that was due to tiredness and lack of expertise on infection control due to being junior.

If we do what Ireland has, do we risk everyone going home and laying low? For how long? Until summer or a vaccine?
We still don't know how it reacts to summer temperatures. It's a big gamble to assume it will follow winter flu/cold pathways and all but disappear by end of May.

If we do lockdown, do we risk it coming back again when we emerge? Will it come back worse?

It's such a catch 22 isn't it?

I'm not a fan of who is running the show here. I don't trust Cummings and Boris at all. But we have no way of knowing at this point. Not until China fully emerges from its enforced hibernation. And even then, with them being so secretive, can we trust them anyway?

I'm trying to be calm and logical here. It's bloody hard work.

@RedToothBrush

The logic is that long term we will have a covid-19 outbreak at some point because it's in such wide circulation everywhere else, so the government wanted it to come to the uk and spread rather than locking us down at that point.

I still find it hard to get away from that unsaid tackle decision
Really? I think we all knew they'd never be able to stop it, so what else could they do? I find it strange you find it hard to comprehend.

It's also just been in the news that in Scotland anyway they are in the midst of trying to double beds and ventilators and have started cancelling non urgent ops. That was on BBC news ten mins ago. So just because you aren't aware, doesn't mean it's not actually happening

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2020 07:31

Agree. That's your bottom line. You need to keep up your own health and strength. Doing so much you exhaust yourself faster than you need to won't help anyone.

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2020 07:33

Read what I said. I said I comprehended it then got panned on this thread for scaremongering!!!

This is sick-I don’t want to catch it. I don’t want to be a statistic in their game plan.

Literally sacrificing the elderly and the sick to create "herd immunity"

OP posts:
Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 07:37

You can’t get immunity anyway as it’s a flu like illness.

It will mutate roughly every 4-5 people.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 07:37

We obviously don't have the data or specialised knowledge to really know which strategy is best at minimising the loss of life

  • without wrecking the economy for years too

However, it is very concerning that UK policy is not only so different from that of other countries,
but also

it is concerning that both fmr Health Sec Jeremy Hunt and the former regional Public health England director openly disagree with govt strategy

Tory MPs are very loyal & disciplined
and he has also completely destroyed his chances of getting back into Cabinet for as long as Boris is PM

For Hunt to speak out means his concern for the country has outweighed all that.

  • if we assume Johnson is sincerely doing his best, I see no reason to doubt that the other two men are also giving their honest opinions

We won't know who is right for months, maybe a year
Maybe there will be not much difference in final death totals, but only in the economic impact ?

Hippywannabe · 13/03/2020 07:38

Thanks for all these threads. They help in these times. When is the next Cobra meeting? Do we know?

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 07:39

That’s why flu vaccines have to be done yearly.

I’m pretty sure cattle corona virus vaccine is the same. Will have to ask some farmers!

Rocketmam · 13/03/2020 07:40

We've decided to self-isolate from today, so it has removed a lot of anxiety for our personal situation.

But I'm still very worried about the carehome next door, elderly relatives who just seem to trust the government and reckon its all fine, stop making a fuss and just wash your hands...

If this 60% is their actual plan then they are truly despicable.

Quartz2208 · 13/03/2020 07:40

Red toothbrush I agree I think the only thing you can do is manage this now and there is no stopping it only delay and hoping for the best

But I don’t quite thing they are managing it as well as they can
