3 out of my 8 care staff on the Rota for this morning have already called in sick and will be off for 7 days. I'm expecting a couple more to do so before this evening.
Rightly so for them as they are following advice-they all had coughs that developed this week.
I have no one to cover for them however and I'm already working extra this weekend myself to cover the gaps that existed in the rota already. 6 out of 8 of my service users need 1-1 care 7am-9.30 pm every day, then hourly night checks.
I also have a cough but I can't go off as already we have serious gaps in our care provision and as the manager I have to keep things going somehow. Its either pass on my possibly I suppose corona cough or leave people with no basic care.

I've got an elderly mother and two kids at home, one of whom isn't that well with (I think) tonsillitis. I've still got to manage the school run for the other one and sports training/matches etc as all of that is still on.

I've had a little cry this morning before trying to pull myself together.

I strongly wish the government had given less vague guidance, had banned non essential travel and events, and had said something-anything- about how practically front line health and social care services are meant to cope. There is no guidance or plan at local level either from either local government or internal management. Usually if it so much as snows we get an email from the local authority with instructions of what to do or who to call if there is a staffing crisis. This time absolutely Nothing. We are on our own and that's scary.

This is going to be my life (and that of lots of nhs/social care staff) until either this is over-or I get sick I suppose...

Dramalamaindeed · 13/03/2020 07:04

Do you think we will ever go into lockdown? Is that ever part of the plan? Is it about timing or what? I don’t really understand

SansaSnark · 13/03/2020 07:04

This is why the government's plan won't work. They ought to be giving really clear guidance to employers about this. But it does seem like that haven't.

It is almost like we are being set up to fail - and then the government can pass off the blame to ordinary people, saying we didn't follow the proper advice and it is all our fault.

If they were serious about this, there would surely be some kind of method to report employers saying people should come in anyway?

'I went on a ski trip with 23 other people - 17 of us came back with coronavirus'
"This could have been avoided, firstly with the Italian authorities being honest about the situation. I don’t think they've been honest at all."

Andrew and his friends stayed in a chalet in Selva di Gardena as part of a Ski Total package between February 22 and 29.

The virus was spreading across northern Italy, but Andrew said official advice at the time only applied to the Lombardy region.

"I was informed that as far they were concerned, there was no coronavirus in the Dolomites," he said.

NerrSnerr · 13/03/2020 07:05

I know it's tough but people need to stand firm with their employers and keep repeating the official advice. Please don't be that person who goes to work with the cough, even if it's not coronavirus the last thing the people with asthma etc needs right now is a cold. They've got enough to battle without catching anything else going round.

I have a couple of friends in their 30s with young children who are extremely vulnerable due to ill health and they're having to consider plans for if they're seriously ill or die. It's really serious for some.

1happyhippie · 13/03/2020 07:05

I work in a care home, already have staff off sick with various illnesses. If we were to develop symptoms and have to stay off, our home would really struggle.
Obviously, we have to stay away to protect our residents but who would be providing their care during this time if a high number of staff need to stay home?
Very worrying time.

Murray that sounds really hard. I hope you can find little pockets of rest in it all.

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 07:07

Don’t be put off by a sigh. Email instead if you are worried about the response. Link to government advice. It’s hard but they are probably feeling differently too now govt has been pretty clear on how dire this is.

nellodee · 13/03/2020 07:08

Those saying that the 80% who get sick must be the healthy ones to protect the 20% of vulnerable people, this is how it works with vaccines. This is not how it works with catching a serious and contagious virus for so many reasons.

How do you ensure the healthy people catch it first? Who will look after the vulnerable ones? What if a single case gets into a vulnerable community?

No, the 80% figure is a "this one is going to have to burn" figure.

Loppy10 · 13/03/2020 07:09

He has a 3 day history of a bad, persistent cough and headaches and feeling generally unwell etc so last night he said that follow the latest advice he would need to stay off work*

The government advice is that only people with a new cough should self isolate for 7 days. If you had an existing cough at the time BoJo made his announcements then somehow magically that is definitely not coronavirus

MurrayTheMonk · 13/03/2020 07:09

Thankyou Ledkr...

I once had to be quarantined in one of my services during a very bad outbreak of Noro. Me and 3 staff, all of us sick, dealing with 48 old people also sick. I said at the time it was the worst 3 days of my life.

Let's hope I didn't speak too soon Grin

UnbalancedMum · 13/03/2020 07:10

Hi, first post on this thread, I’ve been watching this and the others avidly.
I have four children under 9 and work in a secondary school.

I saw this this morning I’m not sure if it’s been posted already I find it hard to keep up! Sorry.

I found the part about cleaning the inside of our noses when washing hands and face before bed quite interesting hadn’t heard anything up until this article. No idea if it will help anyone but may be worth a read at least.

fedup21 · 13/03/2020 07:11

However, he has woken up to lot six tests from his Boss basically telling him that he has to go in - and so he has.

And this is why we should be on lockdown. BJ’s plan simply won’t work.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 13/03/2020 07:12

What modelling are they basing this on re people not able to stay at home?

Where is the model that people won't?

I work with a few people who say they won’t stay at home even if they came into contact with someone who had it, they’d keep quiet and go to work. There will be thousands more with this mindset

@Wannabangbang this is what I don’t understand, how come footballers and presidents wives and celebrities getting tested when they aren’t in hospital/at risk?

Is it because they are getting tested privately or different counties? The person I know with symptoms who is self isolating was told they wouldn’t be tested?

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/03/2020 07:17

But people are still going to work in the Italian lockdown as I understand it? It's the shops/bars/restaurants that are closed?

RedToothBrush · 13/03/2020 07:17

I genuinely think the government had already decided on this strategy on 3rd March (see my posts about it which I got panned for).

The logic is that long term we will have a covid-19 outbreak at some point because it's in such wide circulation everywhere else, so the government wanted it to come to the uk and spread rather than locking us down at that point.

I still find it hard to get away from that unsaid tackle decision. Maybe in 30 years time when there is a declassification of meetings notes we will know.

I do believe at that point they decided to adopt a strategy of how to manage an outbreak rather than stop an outbreak. Which is fair enough. However i already think there are massive short comings with that.

The theory of flattening the peak also includes measures to increase capacity. I see very little sign of this. There doesn't seem to have been efforts to get more respirators and many hospitals have already warned of an immenant PPE shortage. We are dependent on China for this too.

My gut feeling is that closures will start happening next week from the tone and content of what the government have said combined with public pressure but they will not be nation wide.

This really isn’t difficult to work out - they are wealthy and aren’t relying on NHS testing
