Arsenal Manager Arteta has it

ChipotleBlessing · 12/03/2020 22:38

I don’t think the Netherlands and Germany have closed schools either? I can see the argument for doing it this way. I just hope they’re bloody sure they’re right.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 22:38

@sunshinegirl82
It flattens the curve, buys the NHS time, the cases don't grow as fast.
When they stop the lockdown it will be a phased approach so it doesn't spike.
Nobody is saying lockdowns make the virus go away, it slows the spread so the NHS doesn't get swamped.

Alex Wickham @alexwickham
Premier League having a comms disaster tonight — Arsenal manager tests positive, while Man City and Leicester players self-isolate — yet at 9:30pm @premierleague press releases a statement saying all games this weekend are going ahead

Hellsbells123098 · 12/03/2020 22:39

Arsenal manager apparently tested positive surely they have to cancel football now.

Makes me uncomfortable huge gatherings still taking place, I know people have the choice not to go but every country feels to be doing more than us

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 22:39

I said off the top of my head @random18
It isn't a concise list.
I'm sure there is one around though.

Goodnight mac12, heading that way myself too. Everyone, get a good night's sleep and keep those immune systems healthy.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 22:40

The Netherlands has banned gatherings of over 100 people.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 22:42

People are panicking here. You're seeing other countries doing "stuff' and are fearful of what's to come here. You hear the stories of how Italian health care us on the brink of collapse etc.
But maybbeeeee, our tactic will mean we have a longer period of it but affecting less people at the same time thus helping the NHS to keep up.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 22:42

ofwarren I disagree. I think lots on here do beleive the virus will go away if we lockdown.

The problem with lockdown is that potentially we push it too far? And we start getting into winter season again?

I can definitely see the logic in what they are saying.

We will take extreme measures just not yet .

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2020 22:43

Just cancelled my 40th birthday party for 70 people next weekend 😭

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 22:44

I understand that but we don't actually know what will happen when the lockdowns stop. We hope there won't be a further peak but what if there were? What if that second peak hit in the middle of seasonal flu season?

Oblomov20 · 12/03/2020 22:44

I thought the conference was well handled. The 2 health officials on either side of Boris were calm and convincing.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 22:44

@TokyoSushi

That's shit, sorry. Happy Birthday.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 22:45

How @horehound if we are not doing anything to combat it's growth?
I'm really not enjoying being part of this 'experiment' to be honest.

Emergency prem league meeting tomorrow.

ViciousJackdaw · 12/03/2020 22:46

@TokyoSushi I'm so sorry to hear that, I know it's for the greater good but you must be gutted.

Greentea93 · 12/03/2020 22:46

Belgium just announced all schools closed from Monday for five weeks, all bars, cafes and restaurants close from tomorrow midnight till 03/04

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 22:47

If everyone with symptoms remains at home for 7 days it will slow/reduce the spread by 25%(?) I think was the figure put forward at the press conference.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 22:47

I'm so sorry @tokyosushi
That must have been a heart wrenching decision to make.

OP posts:
Horehound · 12/03/2020 22:47

@ofwarren we are. We are washing our hands and telling people who feel symptoms to stay at home. Everything is an experiment since it's all new.

Maybe you need time away from these threads.

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2020 22:48

Thank you, lots of people, smallish space, elderly family, not worth the risk.

I'd also be super upset if only about 10 people were able to come!

Bless DH, I've always wanted to go to Iceland in winter so he's promised we can go next winter, all being well by then!

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 22:48

Don't patronise me @horehound

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/12/how-do-coronavirus-containment-measures-vary-across-europe

Belgium havent closed schools. Neither have Germany or the Netherlands. France/Spain/Switzerland havent either across the board.

We arent actually that different from a lot of Europe (that not to say its the right choice) just weird that it is seen that we are

Guardian has the German response as the following

*In short, the meeting’s participants concluded that Germany is now in crisis mode, with a plan to be unrolled with immediate effect to restructure the country’s hospitals in order to boost the number of intensive care beds (currently there are 28,000 of them, 25,000 of which are equipped with respiratory apparatus). All non-urgent operations are to be postponed. The state will offer financial help to the health insurance companies to ensure this happens, Merkel said.

She appealed to Germans to restrict social contact as much as possible. She also advised on the cancellation of all gatherings which are not strictly necessary. She said the next “4, 5 weeks” would be “very very crucial in determining the question as to what happens next”.

Markus Söder, premier of Bavaria and the leader of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria, admitted that the situation was “far more dramatic than we had thought even one or two weeks ago”. He said that the government’s quick introduction of so-called ‘Kurzarbeit’ - or work reduction policies introduced at the height of the banking crisis, which ensure workers receive their wages, and see employers compensated by the state “send an important signal to German businesses”. He coined a phrase used by Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank at the height of the Euro crisis, “we will do whatever it takes”.

Although many Germans had hoped or expected they might do, the leaders did not decide on:

  • a universal policy on closing schools, kindergartens and universities, although Söder did announce this evening that Bavaria (which currently has 500 people with coronavirus, and one death) will do so from tomorrow, becoming the first state to do so.
  • Neither did it decide on the closure of German borders (though it will control them including checking temperatures).
  • Neither did it decide to stop flights to and from Italy.*

I cant see that being considerably different to ours

Horehound · 12/03/2020 22:49

@Sunshinegirl82 yes, the info has been given but people don't want to listen.
They won't be happy unless we are all told to sit in our houses for four months. Then they'll moan about something else that they can't control
