Dd1 is disappointed her temperature is only 37.7 and therefore can't stay off school and watch tv all day. She'd be bored senseless by Sunday. She loves school too so I was surprised. Dd2 finds school boring but was upset that schools might have to close at some point. Contrary pair. My mum has decided to self isolate and she's told me she's scared. She's got everything she needs and we can face time so that's reassuring at least. A family member has had a business trip to France cancelled but that was before today's news. I'm wondering if the one due to go to Dubai and Bali will be sensible and cancel. Probably not.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 21:12

@RedToothBrush so Italy has the worst record for washing hands in Europe, with France and Spain not far behind?

Nope, Italy is second worst. The Netherlands is apparently the worst offender with Spain and France not far behind. Germany and the UK seem to do a lot better.

FacingtheAbess · 12/03/2020 21:12

Re hand washing.

Mr Peter piot '' the virus chaser ''
London school of tropical...

Said this is far more scary than ebola because it lives in the throat and can be caught just by speaking to someone.

fedup21 · 12/03/2020 21:13

So the plan actually seems to be for everyone to get CV? So, no point in testing as it doesn’t matter and no need to close schools/limit gatherings.

Is that really ‘Delay’?

It sounds more like ‘Spread’!

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 21:14

Ebola has a 70% death rate. I'm definitely more frightened of Ebola.

Nacreous · 12/03/2020 21:14

frumpety I think from this study in the Lancet (sample size 200) it looks like it's 6-9 days.

FacingtheAbess · 12/03/2020 21:15

For duck sake, telling people to get over it is bad form.
You have no idea what posters are dealing with at all or their personal circumstances.

ClientQueen · 12/03/2020 21:15

Thanks @Horehound Hmm
I manage to work FT and do pretty much everything myself. I was well, until I got a call sending me to hospital as an emergency when I was 32
I don't particularly enjoy injecting myself with a drug that makes me vomit, gives me flu for 24hrs, a headache, a raging fever and horrific bone pain. I don't like using up holiday from work to see haematology every 10 weeks and I don't like having a condition that is 1 in 1.5 million for adults. Or being the only patient they treat with it
I'm a severe risk for sepsis hence why I'm on these threads because I'm worried. I don't sit in a&e waiting rooms, or GP waiting rooms, in barrier nursed if I'm in hospital and I can't be on a ward
But hey if you want to swap, you're more than welcome

emsy86 · 12/03/2020 21:16

What benefit is testing now really? If the know its wide spread it mKes sense to tell anyone who is ill to stay at home and only go to hospital if it is necessary... Knowing how many cases there are will not fix anything right now!

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 21:17

Yes

and no need to close schools/limit gatherings.

Not yet because we’re not close enough to the peak to make it sustainable

Nacreous · 12/03/2020 21:17

frumpety
Sorry missed the article:

FacingtheAbess · 12/03/2020 21:18

Client's, lots of people on these threads are worried because they have additional conditional or personal circumstances.

NoddyMcPintsAlot · 12/03/2020 21:18

Regarding a few posts mentioning Ireland’s school closures and potentially reacting too early. Ireland has not just closed school.
All mass gatherings over 100 are banned.
All national sporting events cancelled.
Employers advised to facilitate work from home where possible.
Oh and obligation to attend mass relaxed Smile
Community asked to social distance themselves.
Curtailing wide spread community spread is the aim to take pressure off health services.
It’s very worrying for the economy but if everyone plays their part hopefully we can ride this out and return to normality.

OnNaturesCourse · 12/03/2020 21:19

Following with interest but start of thread wont load.

What happens if/when work places close - are wages paid or are we expected to live off thin air and benefits??

I know when my partners work closes due to weather etc he doesn't get paid - it's hard, and that's only for a few weeks..
God knows how we'd manage if it was shut for months 😳

Horehound · 12/03/2020 21:24

@ClientQueen oh everyone has a story, I have a thing that affects 1-2% of the world population. Worrying about it in this thread won't do anything. I have two family members with MS, my dad has asthma. The list goes on. Everyone knows someone with something.the reality is they might die. We cannot save everyone.
Worrying doesn't help anything.

IrisAtwood · 12/03/2020 21:25

I think at this point its all about 1) Getting the NHS as ready as possible to deal with what is coming and 2) Asking people to be sensible if they develop symptoms and if they are vulnerable.

I am self isolating as much as I can because of my serious health conditions. However the prospect of months of living like this, combined with months of uncertainty as I need relatively urgent cardiac surgery which has been postponed (they’re only doing emergencies or imminent threat to life surgeries), is having a terrible effect on my mental health.

I grew up reading the 70s end of the world blockbusters and watching Survivors on TV. Memories of those are scary and it all feels surreal.

IrisAtwood · 12/03/2020 21:26

@Horehound Well gee. Thank God you’re around to point that out! I’m now looking for the thread to pull myself together and considering a strong cup of sweet tea.

That’ll do it.

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 21:27

Of course they can’t be - that’s why we can’t lock down too early

ClientQueen · 12/03/2020 21:27

I worry about it on here because it's the only place I can vent. I look "well" so in RL people are laughing that it won't affect anyone who isn't already sick. I can't talk to my family about it and the consultant can't give me any guidance because they don't know
I can't do my job from home

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 21:27

God knows how we'd manage if it was shut for months

That's where it gets really crazy and you have social unrest. That could well happen in later stages of a shut down if government poorly handles contingency planning for that.

That scares me a hell of a lot.

I'm fortunate in that we have savings, dh's work is financially in a good position and has plans for staff to work from home.

But what about everyone else? Few people have any savings to fall back on nor do they work in a secure industry nor can work from home.

Even then I think we are in a far better position than the US. I honestly think it could descend into anarchy there in places. And that's without mentioning the gun factor.

SistemaAddict · 12/03/2020 21:27

@OnNaturesCourse something was said in the budget I think about people being able to claim UC. The practicalities of that though are problematic as you need to attend the job centre a day or two after applying to confirm your identity. Then it takes 5 weeks for the first payment. You can get an advance but this puts you in debt and lowers future payments to pay it back. I'm not sure how helpful claiming UC will be at all. Mortgage payments being suspended will be a huge help though.

FurForksSake · 12/03/2020 21:30

I don't think the extra screening capacity and only testing those who require hospital treatment is mutually exclusive. At the peak of weeks either side we may well be testing many, many hospitalised patients.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 21:31

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress

If Italy are expecting to peak on 3rd April they locked down about 4 weeks before the peak?

If they are expecting the peak in the UK in 10-14 weeks it seems to me that if they do decide to lock down here it will be a few weeks off yet even if we do look to go several weeks earlier than Italy.

Calmonthesurfacebut · 12/03/2020 21:31

Just asking is @gpswife around? I just wanted to say the gel arrived. Flowers

Hope she’s okay. I haven’t RTWT but looks like it’s a bit crazy.
