Someone asked me to watch the select committee briefing because I didn’t understand delaying the peak & wanted the CSO/CMO models to be open to peer review. I also watched today’s press conference.
To conclude: they think it is more of a risk that people are lonely/bored than that we try to contain this. They want to use nudge behavioural psychology, really good at getting people to pay tax on time, to contain a biological entity that met its first human 3 months ago?!!!
There is no model for this but the one that China & Italy have met. We are fucked.

emsy86 · 12/03/2020 19:53

I'm with others who state what is the point in testing if the numbers are 10 times what the figures show at the moment... Focus needs to be on treating those who need treatment and keeping anyone who is suspected of having it away from vulnerable people... Its not about making sure cases are as low as possible its about making sure we treat the ones that need treatment.. Huge numbers just cause panic.. I think there is method in the madness here. What would people rather him so oh no one else will die.. He was only being honest!

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:54

There's lots of ways the money could be raised, but also unlike the Tories I wouldn't put the economy before people's lives.

I'm not a fan of Corbyn at all, but I would rather have almost anyone else but Boris right now.

I don't think he is capable of making hard decisions.

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 19:54

There's lots of ways the money could be raised

Such as?

boon · 12/03/2020 19:55

This whole thing is a neverending nightmare! What are ee supposed to do??? We're like sitting ducks. I actually feel sick 🤢😢🙁

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 19:56

Raised how?

The economy is people’s lives. It’s their livelihoods.

Cheeseismylife · 12/03/2020 19:56

Why do Germany have so many less deaths than other countries with a similar number of cases? What are they doing differently?

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:57

Taxing big business properly to start with.

But I don't believe in austerity politics anyway.

Anyway I think we are getting off the subject of the thread.

Packingsoapandwater · 12/03/2020 19:57

I'm watching the press conference and, yet again, there's missng information.

What exactly is a continuous cough? How do you identify it? Does it mean you cough several times in a row? Does it mean you are regularly coughing over a day? Say every hour, you cough? Does it mean you cannot stop coughing at all?

GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 12/03/2020 19:57

It's a good idea for people with fever and cough to stay at home to reduce the spread but surely there needs to be monitoring and enforcement.

So employers having to send people home with symptoms or face prosecutions under health and safety legislation.

Teachers checking their forms temperature and observing for coughing fits at registration then sending children home.

Those temperature scanners outside tube stations and airports and Westfield with police / army stopping anyone with fever and taking their details and sending them home. On the spot fines for anyone out and about again in seven days.

Some kind of concerted effort to reduce the spread!

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 19:58

I do think it's really important to remember that for most people this is a mild illness. Most of us that catch it will be fine.

If you are older or have chronic health conditions then obviously the risks are higher but even in those cases the majority of people recover.

We are going to have to face this and get through it. It can't be stopped.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 12/03/2020 19:58

cheese Germany have a lot higher capacity for icu beds than most other countries in the world. I remember seeing a chart a couple of days ago and I think they were one of the highest behind the usa.

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 19:58

The kids' schools are taking handwashing really seriously - start of the day, before and after playtimes and lunchtimes and before hometimes.

The kids' hands are absolutely wrecked I noticed tonight as a result - I'm now predicting panic buying hand cream to kick in in a couple of days.

StormyClouds · 12/03/2020 19:58

Seeing as though our current government hasn't done anything at all yet.

I don't think that's quite fair- and I didn't vote for BJ. The focus now has to be on putting plans in place to ensure that the NHS can cope with the peak of the epidemic.

School closures, event cancellations, lockdowns etc will happen- but it is a difficult choice as to when that should happen.

Maighdeann · 12/03/2020 19:58

Exactly what I wanted to ask @cheese

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 20:01

Anyway I think we are getting off the subject of the thread.

Unless the subject of the thread is simply to cause the most amount of anxiety then we’re absolutely not getting off topic

The reality of the situation is that the likelihood is most of us will get this at some point

And there’s no cure for at least a year

And nothing can change that

So we either man / woman up and take the precautions we think are appropriate or we sit around and moan about not being told what to do

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 20:02

Fine, what about mortgage payments? How does that help renters? And what about council tax? Or water, gas or electric? Or Internet or phone which sound pretty important at the moment? Or TV licence for information?

I'm almost envious of those in a council house on benefits at this point because they don't have to worry about being kicked out during a coronavirus crisis and they have a guaranteed income already set up. Almost.

Italy have the police on the streets, New York have the National Guard.
People will obey if there are consequences.

I live in a semi rural location. Do you think they will have police or army on every street around here? Cos I don't.

Newjez · 12/03/2020 20:03

@Cheeseismylife
Why do Germany have so many less deaths than other countries with a similar number of cases? What are they doing differently?

"Ve hav vays of making you live!!!"

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Finallyatooth · 12/03/2020 20:05

Does anyone know what local authorities are doing about child absence and self isolating? Am I going to get one of those snotty attendence letters if I have to keep my child off school to self isolate?

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 20:05

Paying people basic income during this period would actually stimulate the economy, not harm it.

Over 500,000 unexpected deaths and millions in hospital will do far more harm to the economy than helping people financially through the worst of this crisis.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 20:07

If people have no money they can't go out to try and spend it...

Belindabelle · 12/03/2020 20:13

Yes Australian GP cancelled. All Broadway shows cancelled for a month at least. Ireland and France close schools. Meanwhile in Britain over 70’s told not to cruise and carry on as normal.

Newjez · 12/03/2020 20:15

@StormyClouds
I'm not a fan of tony Blair. But at least he didn't hobble the NHS just as we need it most.

mrshoho · 12/03/2020 20:15

It seems as though the government are drip feeding day by day to prepare us for the hellish months to come. The reality that we will lose loved ones said today. The school travel stopping. The gradual changes to ordinary life so I suppose we hopefully become mentally prepared. It's still a gamble though but what else can we do and it has been obvious all along that we were never going to be in a position to go the way that China took. If the fittest of us are kept away from our hospitals and recover without medical services then maybe they will be better prepared to deal with our vulnerable. I'm forcing myself to positive thoughts though and wishing our NHS had not been neglected for so long. Also my thanks to all front line staff for all you do.
