I assume there will be a vaccine at some point?

yes, but that will take 18 months at least.

The government have said they are planning to wait for a slow peak in a few months but I can't see any advice at all which would suggest they have any measures at all for this to happen. I honestly can't see a change from the last phase to this.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:32

@daffodilsandblossom
But how is not putting in any containment measures going to slow it down?

It made sense, thought they were good.

But I’m also glad to be getting loads of emails about cancelled events, people making good decisions.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:33

@essentialhummus That must have been a difficult decision to make but it is almost definitely the right one.

@belindabelle that is interesting, although he had his own role in damaging the NHS.

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 19:33

Yes most of us will get it.

Since we are basically being thrown under the bus at this point, my basic plan is to try to avoid my family catching it at the same time the main peak and complete overwhelm of the NHS happens. So we are socially isolating for a few months.

I am aware we are very fortunate to be able to do this.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:36

"We will lose our colleagues, we will be burying our colleagues."

Dr Jenny Vaughan from The Doctors' Association says NHS staff know they will lose colleagues - but "the medical front line is ready, willing and able to try and help deal with this pandemic". t.co/7GH3yPAS2P

Yes, most of us will get it, but we must try to avoid getting it at the peak, particularly if we or anyone in our family is compromised.

My family have bought enough food here to survive three months if necessary. Whether work will allow WFH for that long is a different matter. But the way the economy is heading nothing feels certain anymore.

Coquohvan · 12/03/2020 19:38

Total respect for our HCP they like us are mostly likely to get CV yet they are ready to help us with their efforts. Thank you is no where near enough. God bless you all.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:39

The most common symptoms of #coronavirus are:

New continuous cough
OR
High temperature (37.8 degrees or higher)

If you have either of these, you need to:
▶️ stay at home
▶️ not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started

@ofwarren They will use containment measures, but they have to time these to start when the peak of the curve is approaching and we are not there yet. If they start containment measures now they would have to last for months and the majority of people would not obey them. They would start off with good intentions - "yeah a couple of weeks at home with the children sounds fine, I have playdough and painting we can do". But would they have that same mentality after two months of it? Two months of not being outside and not having seen anyone outside of their extended family? I doubt it.

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 19:42

Since we are basically being thrown under the bus at this point

But what do you actually expect the government to tell you that you can’t decide for yourself?

Other than potential school fines, what is stopping you locking down indefinitely if you think it’s necessary?

And how would those things change if it was a government directive, cos they’re not going to be paying everyone’s salary if they’re off work

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:42

See, I don't get this "people will not obey it" mentality.
Italy have the police on the streets, New York have the National Guard.
People will obey if there are consequences.

Myself and my children have had a cough for two weeks (this is normal, a cough can take weeks to go away), so we are free to go out because it's been more than seven days.

I'm not looking forward to the evil looks and comments when we cough in public!

UnitDare · 12/03/2020 19:45

Surely we are on a similar trajectory to Italy if we don't implement any changes? I'm genuinely confused - are we deliberately going to accept that in order to start closing things down later?

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:45

Japan are guaranteeing basic income for people. Italy are suspending mortgage payments. Other countries are guaranteeing sick pay for people.

So actually yes, the government could pay us to stay home. They just aren't.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:45

@UnitDare Seems so.

Coquohvan · 12/03/2020 19:47

Sansa I heard that Santander Nat West RBS are suspending mortgages.

Coquohvan · 12/03/2020 19:47

Hopeful other lenders will follow suit. BBC news the other day.

StormyClouds · 12/03/2020 19:48

I'm not saying I agree with everything Johnson is doing- in particular, I think school closures should be looked at now.

But can you imagine what the situation would be like if we had Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Len McLuskey in charge of the response- we'd be looking at an even worse situation.

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 19:49

So actually yes, the government could pay us to stay home. They just aren't.

And that money would come from where?

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:50

What do you think they would or wouldn't do @stormycloud? Seeing as though our current government hasn't done anything at all yet.

OP posts:
Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 19:50

How long can those payments be maintained? For 3 months? 6 months?

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 19:52

Mortgage companies suspending payment is far more likely and possible than the government paying us. From what? - what gets cut for this?
