But in a country where 90% of country is still carrying on as thought nothing is happening you will stand out wearing a mask and lots of people aren't confident enough to wear one anyway. Im not sure we'll see lots of people mask wearing unfortunately.

mrshoho · 12/03/2020 19:16

Murray that sounds grim. Seriously I would resign if you can. It will only get more desperate. God I feel for people in care homes or dependent on home care.

What a terrible prospect for the coming months for so many people.

Thank you sansa for the update.

‘I'm a medical student on placement at a major London (UK) hospital.
Today two patients on an open ward tested positive. Another patient with ?COVID-19 was swabbed two days ago with the so-called "rapid test" swab and we are waiting to hear back still. Rumour is at a another hospital there's a patient who's been waiting 10 days for a swab result.
Hospital guidelines are even if you have come into contact with a positive patient, you should not leave work or take any precautions until you show symptoms.

CEO of the hospital trust sent an email to all healthcare staff saying he has glad that nobody so far has asked about overtime pay if things get worse because there won't be any, and everyone's "good will" in this matter is appreciated.”

Yeah, I'm another wondering if Ireland are going too early and perhaps there is method in the madness over here?! I mean, shutting schools for 2 weeks isn't actually going to help that much in the long run is it? Feels a bit like a token 'look how seriously we are taking this' move, that might not prove all that effective in the end?

I know fuck all about it really, but it just seems odd to have such a huge difference in approach.

thesunwillout · 12/03/2020 19:21

@MurrayTheMonk
@Fedup21

Glad you got what I was saying, I know/understand as a pp said, does it matter if we knew we had it or not, not really.
But, the UK figures will be false.

I think that's more scary for people, I'm not happy nor comfortable with being kept it the dark.
No we can't stop it, but there was a semblance of calm knowing we were testing a measured part of the community.

DD just pointed out, many teens are going to take full advantage of the stay at home if you're coughing rule.
Classrooms will be half full, DD is a level year.

FacingtheAbess · 12/03/2020 19:21

I think staggered closures would have worked.

Other people will be mixing, it's already in our hospitals, pulling out that school population, would surely reduce it.

Babyfairy0923 · 12/03/2020 19:22

I feel like there’s not much to talk about now.
You either hibernate for the next year or you catch it and it’s the survival of the fittest!
They are doing nothing to stop it, quite the opposite!!

Discobar · 12/03/2020 19:23

@fedup21 - close the schools, send the kids to the grandparents and infect them. You think that didn't happen in Italy?

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:24

@defthand That is really concerning stuff.

Discobar · 12/03/2020 19:24

@Babyfairy0923 - hate to break this to you. There's no vaccine. The point is too lighten the burden on the NHS

Packingsoapandwater · 12/03/2020 19:25

I'm starting to get a bit narked now.

We need government guidelines on how to proceed for the next month/two months. It's fine talking about how to act if you think you have the virus, but what do people do about upcoming events? Projects? Initiatives? Meetings?

Do I basically cancel all our community projects for the foreseeable future, particularly those involving the elderly or infirm? Do I postpone start dates for new community initiatives and events? Do I quietly arrange a welfare check system for the elderly people in my ward? What do I say to people who ask me whether they should cancel their exercise groups? Their mental health meets?

I can't find any information on this. It is as though no one wants to give a straight answer. It's all "well, might not be a great idea". It's all so bloody wishy washy.

And it is people like me, my colleagues and my fellow community workers that do this kind of community-based work. We are on the ground, so to speak.

If they would just say something like ... we do not advise meetings of more than 100 people, I'd know how to proceed.

It is as though no one wants to make a firm decision. But all that does is pass responsibility back down the chain. Because Boris or Matt will not issue clear guidelines, someone like me has to make a call about it.

Bearbehind · 12/03/2020 19:26

You either hibernate for the next year or you catch it and it’s the survival of the fittest!

I think that’s the gist of it

They are doing nothing to stop it, quite the opposite!!

Given the above, what do you think can be done?

Queenunikitty · 12/03/2020 19:26

They said they were going to test everyone currently in hospital from now on and try and manage that, that is how I understood it.

LambriniSocialist · 12/03/2020 19:26

I feel like there’s not much to talk about now.
You either hibernate for the next year or you catch it and it’s the survival of the fittest!
They are doing nothing to stop it, quite the opposite!!

But they said they need a significant proportion of the population to catch it in order to give herd immunity?

daffodilsandblossom · 12/03/2020 19:27

The thing is, this virus exists and is out there. We need to accept that.

If the government shut everything down, do you think the virus will just completely disappear? No. Cases will go down initially which will look good, but then those few cases remaining will cluster again and we will have another peak. There is no way of stopping it.

What the government wants is people to catch it gradually so that the NHS is able to cope with the minority of cases that require critical care. Then once most people have had it, they will have antibodies in their system against the virus.

Those saying people have been reinfected, I don't think that has been confirmed. I think levels of the virus fluctuate which may lead to false negatives if the virus goes below the detection limit. I am not sure but that is one theory I have read.

onlinelinda · 12/03/2020 19:27

@helenj1977 thanks for comment answering my question from last thread.

I was very surprised to hear that we have half the critical care beds that Italy has (channel 4 news).

Babyfairy0923 · 12/03/2020 19:27

@Discobar ?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 12/03/2020 19:27

Even if you hibernate for a year you will be exposed eventually. You would have to hibernate for the rest of your life.

Babyfairy0923 · 12/03/2020 19:28

I assume there will be a vaccine at some point?

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 19:28

@Packingsoapandwater Yes, I agree. A lot of the advice being given out seems really vague and there doesn't seem to be high level strategic guidance.

EssentialHummus · 12/03/2020 19:28

packing I’m one of the organisers of a very large community festival, and we today swallowed hard and took the decision to cancel. The lack of guidance was a real hindrance.

Belindabelle · 12/03/2020 19:29

Jeremy Hunt breaking rank (not that he is in cabinet anymore) and saying he would not be doing this if he was in charge.

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 19:29

But does it matter about the figures so much? At the moment 10,000 people possibly more, possibly less are likely to have cv.

What matters is the services can cope and testing is there for those who most need it. Testing everyone and people ringing 111 demanding a test is not going to help.

If you’re I’ll stay at hone, look after yourselves, if after 7 days it gets considerably worse then take action (but you might not get through because others are phoning demanding a test)

You all know if you’ve got a new cough or not and feel hot sweaty and like shit!

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 19:29

ITALY takes an unprecedented step in modern history, In Rome, all churches will be closed due to coronavirus until April 3.

Lambrini they have not said what measures they will take though...

They sound worried about asking the elderly to be lonely. They seem scared of asking people to do what it takes.

If they said... At x number, if pressure is blah, we would close schools.. We would do z... But all we have is gentle soft, wash hands... Sing hallelujah, stay at home with symptoms.

Flatten peaks... We all know someone who won't fucking stay at home, we all know people think this is a nonsense and are angry it's being made such a fuss of!

Lady the other day was cross with her own mother for being scared Sad

I can't fathom what the psyche of the UK is when they can't say at the very least, take children out if you want?

Even even even if those parents did take their dc to a play park which is not what I would do, even then however they are not stuck in the lunch queue, they are not all touching the wise pay.. They are not all squashed in corridors.

They didn't even make provisions for dc with respitory illness
