Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

Many other parts of the world have reached or are approaching their peak time

Uk has agreed to school closures etc and all other measures when it’s that time for us

LastTrainEast · 12/03/2020 19:28

If you don't need wages then by all means stay at home and keep the kids home, but you'd better hope the food delivery drivers and shop staff don't decide to do the same or you will starve.

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2020 19:30

Ireland though arent taking drastic measures they are shutting schools but not restaurants or pubs. When (and it is when) we do shutdown it will be a shutdown not a partial one

Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 19:32

The science behind the decisions made was fully explained and makes perfect sense.

MollyMoss · 12/03/2020 19:33

I've had emails from my DC's schools that they are preparing distance learning, in case of closure. South East.

Us too - midlands

LizzyButton · 12/03/2020 19:33

And there came three white men bearing papers and they stood at their lecterns and preached.

Johnson: shirt, tie, 55, Public School - Eton.

Vallance: shirt, tie, 59/60, Public School - Truro.

Whitty: shirt, tie, 53, Public School - Malvern College.

And after they spoke, some of the mothers said "the white men are wise and in their 50s". Other mothers fell into lamentations and grinding - if not gnashing - of teeth and looked on the white men and saw that they were not as they the mothers are. Nor were they like many other men. And many mothers were sore afraid.

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 19:35

Will be definitely be doing a proper shut down then, just nearer the peak?

larrygrylls · 12/03/2020 19:35

Vera99,

But do you trust our chief scientific adviser or WHO? Both scientists but giving different advice.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 19:36

Ireland is closing schools now but presumably they are not at the peak. Wonder if they will re-close when it hits.

WaterSheep · 12/03/2020 19:36

they seem to be saying they’ll only test people in hospital. Which will conceal the actual prevalence in the population.

Is this true? Only just catching up on the news. Does this mean there will no longer be testing in the 100 GP surgeries, to check for community spread?

I’m at a new level of rage and disgust at Boris. He really is a useless sack of shit.

TheQueef · 12/03/2020 19:40

I hate to be the one to mention it but the cruise companies are closing.
His Important Message was wasted.

4cats2kids · 12/03/2020 19:40

The science is different in our country to the countries who have closed the schools, is it?

Wake up before a member of your family dies!

MrsMGE · 12/03/2020 19:40

I'm not one to panic easily, but I have family and friends in Italy and they all said one thing, consistently: stay at home, as much as possible, no matter your age - and do it now before all hell breaks loose.

I am so, so annoyed, my employer follows UK Govt advice even though we all can work remotely. It makes absolutely no sense at all and the Government should know better by now. They had enough time to learn from other countries by now, and yet it's profit over people, again. A Conservative government for you, probably pleased some elderly people will be "offloaded" and off their balance sheet.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/03/2020 19:42

Yes, gobsmacked. Can't understand it. Why are we taking such a vastly different path than all the other countries in Europe/the world - going against the WHO advice?

xanderllama · 12/03/2020 19:43

Our government is so useless and Boris is a selfish git! This is a pandemic and he’s only interested in the economy

Moomin8 · 12/03/2020 19:46

Is anyone thinking of keeping your kids off school to try to limit exposure to vulnerable family members?

larrygrylls · 12/03/2020 19:46

SueEllen,

The ‘Science’ was explained, they intend (deliberately) to let the epidemic run its course, attempting to flatten the peak and time it in the summer. They did not mention how many deaths they are expecting, hundreds of thousands? Because the way I see it, with even 40% of the population infected and a 3% CFR, that would be about 800,000 dead.

The alternative WHO strategy is to aggressively control it early, as Asia have managed to do whilst research on antivirals and a vaccine is ongoing

If we don’t have a vaccine next winter and the virus comes back worse, Boris will look great. If we have a vaccine by then, it will look like 1 million deaths on Boris’s hands. It is a hell of a gamble.

MrsBeeluga · 12/03/2020 19:49

We have science, rationality and some of the best brains on the planet deciding on the best way forward given what we know and with what resources we have.

I'm from a country in lock down, with this attitude I really hope my country will restrict travel from uk. It may well be that you are better and wiser, but we don't need brits coming here unknowingly infected.

Christ this is megalomania ☹️.

To other posters, I really feel for you, it is scary times.

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 19:49

Is the evidence to show that people would still be immune by next winter or that the virus won't have mutated like flu does?

WaterSheep · 12/03/2020 19:49

hey intend (deliberately) to let the epidemic run its course, attempting to flatten the peak and time it in the summer.

I feel really thick here but how do we flatten the peak without actually implementing any measures to flatten it?

MrsMGE · 12/03/2020 19:51

Those who say it's science. It is not only about science, we all understand the statistics. The point is that the less people leave their own homes, the less likely it is the virus will spread rapidly - and overwhelm the NHS which isn't doing great as it is, without the coronavirus. This will result in mortality rates higher than had the speed of spreading been reduced through staying in as much as possible and not congregating.

We need to buy as much time as possible to monitor and research this virus too and eventually develop a vaccine.

UK experts can take any spin on the statistics they want, but don't forget there are real people behind the numbers and we should strive to save as many lives as possible, not to save as many £££'s as possible because of the potential recession, Sunak's budget maths not adding up and the upcoming impact of Brexit. But here we are.

larrygrylls · 12/03/2020 19:52

Water,

They will implement aggressive measures when we are maybe 1/2 way to the peak so less people are simultaneously sick. Not less in total, just less simultaneously.

SueEllenMishke · 12/03/2020 19:56

Larry yeah I understand the science and the implications of what was said...no need for additional explanations
