Well done Ireland 👍🏻

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 11:46

above is from the Guardian live feed BTW

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:46

Jenny Harries wouldn’t be drawn on our actions going forward,,, ‘based on science ... social distancing etc should go in at the right time”

“We will see cases rise, but don’t want to see a peak”

Dk20 · 12/03/2020 11:46

I'm in Ireland, I am shocked they have taken these measures so early. Usually we wait and follow others.
But I am also delighted. I'm glad we are trying to stop the spread before it gets too bad.
Aside from the schools, telling people to work from home where possible will be hugely helpful. I work in an office with 1500 people, as of yesterday we were in the office and the only people working from home were those with any sign of a cough or illness. I was sent home for a cough I have had the last 5 weeks, but I'm glad now everyone will be able to wfh

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 11:47

That's how I feel @bercows
I'm isolating anyway but can't relax about it till I see some measures put in place.

Jenny Harries...

“Watching to see what happens (in China) when measures are taken off”

“UK have things highly planned” as to measures.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 11:48

Anyone else looking into moving to Ireland asap?
We are literally an experiment right now, masterminded by BJ and Cummings. They are shitting themselves that all their bullshit will be uncovered, although I think BJ thinks he's going to be seen as like the virus version of Churchill

If there is one thing, one tiny tiny thing this could achieve is them out by next year. This will prove how badly the NHS is treated.
Imagine, if Labour had of got in, by now the UC would've been gone, taxes would have started going up for the rich, hospitals would've started to see the benefit.
Meanwhile, BJ is telling EU nationals to feck off and marking many NHS staff as "unskilled" and not worthy of Bully Patel's hallowed points system.

Spagbol88 · 12/03/2020 11:49

I still cannot believe the Liverpool v Madrid match went ahead last night. I'd be curious to know how many fans from Madrid made the trip over. Our government is beyond inept.

Thunderpunt · 12/03/2020 11:50

I'm not surprised about McLaren pulling out of GP - Lewis Hamilton was on radio this morning sounding horrified that it was still going ahead at all

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 11:50

Bibi I've never wanted to be Irish as much as I do right now.
I wanted to for brexit reasons but this just seals the deal.
Excellent leadership.

Is Boris due to speak at 12?

JemimaPuddleCat · 12/03/2020 11:50

Just back from a supermarket where a member of staff was having a very loud discussion with other staff about how "it's only old people who are getting it, so we don't need to worry". The highlight was that "it's called Covid-19, that means it's the 19th time this Coronavirus has been around. We've been fine every other time!" Hmm

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 11:51

Checking in - I've got the news on at the moment and a poorly child at home today. Would have sent her in normally just with a nose full of snot (school are very good at ringing if they start to flag during the day) but in the current climate I've just kept her at home.

She's still convinced it's the Macaroni virus and makes people do the "macaroni cheese dance" (seems to be the macarena).

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:51

? I’m pregnant should I be worried?

A. Look at RCM webpage. Talk to the hospital and better if in a maternity unit. Virus doesn’t pass from mum to baby, but precautions if breastfeeding and have Coronavirus. Ensure careful with hygiene. And try to stay away from those who are symptomatic.

Cheekychop84 · 12/03/2020 11:51

Im in the uk, hoping we follow Ireland's lead on this qnd close down. My husband is having chemotherapy, might have to be professionally retired as he can no longer carry onin his role. We have a child jn primary who has a head teacher who loves to appear in local press exclaiming schools have a duty to remain open for parents and children (think beast of the east) im worried they wouldn't close, at least not straight away but can't afford the fees of £60 per day if i were to pull my child out early. Hope everyone is coping as best they can, its a frightening time

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 11:51

ofwarren DPs family are Irish originally, he is first gen born in UK. If we can go we're going, luckily his cousin has a farm in Tipperary so we shall do it. I've thought about it for a long time but this has made my mind up

Sakura7 · 12/03/2020 11:52

In Ireland. My friend is due to get married on Saturday. Looks like the wedding will have to be cancelled :(

Glad we're taking action though.

OneForMeToo · 12/03/2020 11:52

My school are mentioning nothing. They currently have children away on residential trips and sending out information for school events for the next two weeks. We just get the once weekly gov advice those back from X countries isolate if etc etc

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:52

Jenny Harries
? Visitors after birth?

A. Keep visitors to a minimum if possible ensure they are not symptomatic.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 11:54

"I think for many of us in the health service we are used to major incidents."

Chief nurse at @uhbtrust says they plan to increase critical care beds and insists they are not looking to cancel appointments - but shift them to "digital first".

@Random18 didn't know the Irish premier had been voted out. Still a good speech though. (Realise someone else probably wrote it for him!). I think they are doing the right thing.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 11:55

@sakura7
Ahh that's a shame.
Hopefully she will be able to get a refund or just change dates in the diary

Jenny Harries
?how long to virus stay in surfaces?
a soft surfaces 24 hrs
Hard surfaces longer
We suggest 72 hours
After 3 days the virus wouldn’t survive on surfaces/cloths

They are looking at Care homes guidelines continually and they may change

Sassenach85 · 12/03/2020 11:55

Aunt works in care home, just been told they are going to lockdown.... some staff to be kept in the building other sent off on ssp

Oakmaiden · 12/03/2020 11:56

My husband has just been told that his firm have put him on a list of people expected to work from home "until further notice".

Which is actually great, for us as a family, as he has quite a time consuming commute by train, and often doesn't get home until well after 7pm.
