I agree Yolo. The power of collective action.

JulietteLeGall · 12/03/2020 11:34

43 confirmed cases and one death in Ireland. Well done them taking such decisive action.

Will be furious if UK is told to just carry on and wash hands.

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:34

Ireland making good reasoned conditions.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 11:34

Soap is fine for hands, because you take the time to rub each bit thoroughly

However, recommendations are diluted thick bleach for household cleaning

e.g. Domestos, which diluted 1:20 kills viruses
and also its surfactant (surface film) keeps working for a while.

Thin bleach brands are thought less effective than thick, as they doesn't have the surfactant

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/cleaning-disinfection.html

"For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol,"

Dr Jenny Harry is on BBC now

Loppy10 · 12/03/2020 11:35

So Ireland closes all schools, nurseries and childcare facilities, bans public gatherings of over 500 people, encourages everyone who can to work from home, and suggests people avoid unnecessary social interactions.

Meanwhile BoJo and his private school advisers are still saying we just need to wash our hands Hmm

silverdollarcity · 12/03/2020 11:36

I just listened to the Irish premier's speech and thought that if I lived in Ireland I'd have confidence in him and what he's doing. No idea about his political persuasion or anything but if Boris did a speech like that (despite the fact that he is Boris) then I would have more confidence in our government.

DressingGownofDoom · 12/03/2020 11:37

@Blackbird1234 everyday bleach will do it. The 37p Tesco one is fine

Lynamic · 12/03/2020 11:37

Pumpkintopf you could give them money from their puil premium.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 11:38

yolo if school remains open then my DC will be going!!

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 11:38

Yes, re the cleaning. I stopped a biologist friend this morning (currently testing Covid samples) about house cleaning and she says ordinary detergents won't do.

What actions are countries around the world taking to deal with the #coronavirus outbreak?

🇪🇸 Football matches have been played behind closed doors
🇫🇷 Nurseries and schools shut for two weeks in two most affected regions

@silverdollarcity

I would too. I actually felt a bit emotional at his sure and steadiness when dealing with such a terrible situation.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 11:39

silver the public voted him out. He remains in position until a new govt is formed.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 12/03/2020 11:39

We will go down in history as the country that washed its hands!!

NerrSnerr · 12/03/2020 11:39

That's a bold statement from Ireland. I understand why people are stocking up on food, it's the uncertainty. I do really need some toilet roll in the next couple of days though...

OldQueen1969 · 12/03/2020 11:40

I personally think that the earliest messages about CV being "not that bad", while a sort of commendable response to prevent panic have done untold damage. Maybe a little more panic earlier on around January would have seen a different result now. Just speculating.

What are the latest numbers from China?

They were down because of the restrictions, what's happening now they have began to relax them?

ScatteredMama82 · 12/03/2020 11:41

I can't find anything about a statement from the PM at 12 - did someone mention that earlier on?

SistemaAddict · 12/03/2020 11:43

Leo Varadker has always come across well and makes bojo look like the clown he is. We need leaders who lead. Leaders we can have confidence in me and trust.

I wish my headache would piss off. I've had it a week now. I don't work outside of the never ending work that is being a single mum of 3 so I'm not wanting a day off work. I just want reassurance that the government is doing everything it can to contain this.

NerrSnerr · 12/03/2020 11:44

I agree with @OldQueen1969. I bus load of secondary school children are returning to my village today from Italy- they've been told to self isolate and any siblings have been told to stay away from school too but parents are up in arms about keeping their children off school for a 'little virus' and why would they isolate when it doesn't affect children. It's infuriating.

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2020 11:44

I dont think Germany have closed school on a widespread basis, Spain only have in Madrid, France only in some areas. Singapore didnt either.

The UK are behind yes on sporting events/large events/enabling working from home.

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 11:44

Dr Jenny Harries says

“Says worse case, highest estimated 80% but comparing other countries more like 20% of public should expect to get it”

Ireland closes schools and colleges
Lisa O'Carroll Lisa O'Carroll
Ireland’s taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced the closure of all schools, colleges and childcare facilities from tomorrow as part of a partial lockdown that will apply from 6pm tonight until 29 March.

All indoor gatherings of 100 people or more and outdoor gatherings of 500 or more will be cancelled.

Public transport will still run and shops will remain open. He said:

I know that some of this is coming as a real shock. And it’s going to involve big changes in the way we live our lives. And I know that I’m asking people to make enormous sacrifices. But we’re doing it for each other.

Staff should work from home where possible with meetings online if possible.

Varadkar said he was acting on new medical advice the government had received following a meeting of the national emergency team last night.

“The virus is all over the world, it will continue to spread but it can be slowed,” he said in an address outside Blair House in Washington ahead of a breakfast meeting with the US vice president Mike Pence.

“Acting together as one nation we can save many lives our economy will suffer but in time it will bounce back,” he warned.
