Where have all these poor elderly victims already with known underlying illnesses caught it from though? I very much doubt (but stand to be corrected) they have all been flying around the world or on cruises etc. This surely proves that community transmission is rife and they need to stop the very narrow testing criteria at 111?

Here at work, it is still the bloody wash your hands mantra, business as usual. I think something is going on behind closed doors at a high level here but nothing is leaking.

Helenj1977 · 12/03/2020 15:14

@Newjez just don't super glue yourself to your keyboard 😂

Helenj1977 · 12/03/2020 15:14

On a serious note, is something like this covered in life insurance??

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 12/03/2020 15:15

I wish they'd say x many tested positive in y country. Not there are x many cases.

Whoever said Boris was good at grasping things quickly-Trump is really good at that too, esp pussies.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 15:15

@Helenj1977 Fair point. I know if one of us snuffed it, the other would struggle on one salary

European CDC says containing coronavirus is no longer feasible, recommends suspension of mass gatherings, social distancing measures at workplaces, and measures in and closure of schools

Well it’s policy dependant but yes generally dying of a disease would be covered, why wouldn’t it?

IrisAtwood · 12/03/2020 15:16

@Newjez Bonus!

@BiBiBirdie Reduced pensions. Double bonus!

All we need now is a conspiracy theorist to suggest how convenient it is.

IrisAtwood · 12/03/2020 15:18

@Eeyoresstickhouse My understanding is that they were already hospitalised for their existing conditions, so is more likely to be acquired in hospital.

mondaynoon · 12/03/2020 15:19

There was no mention of social care in the budget so I guess the government is assuming all those people won't be around much longer to need it.

NewYearNewTwatName · 12/03/2020 15:19

WHY, why? is this news to anyone? it's been known for months.

www.theguardian.com/science/2020/mar/12/coronavirus-most-infections-spread-by-people-yet-to-show-symptoms-scientists

It's why so many of us are incredulous at the governments responses over the last few weeks.

This thread on Reddit where UK doctors are talking about what they are seeing is quite terrifying:

@ofwarren
Totally agree and appreciate your links. Just to reduce the scaremongering, I feel it needs pointing out that it’s not a death sentence.

Depends on your life insurance. Some cheaper ones only covers specific illnesses.

Skyejuly · 12/03/2020 15:21

That Reddit thread is scary.

I'm an NHS doctor treating coronavirus – you have no idea how bad it's about to get t.co/dDY0x9u8eW

Basically it is too late for the Government to do anything it seems. About 1% of those who get this will die in the UK. Probably about 60% of the population will get it.
I am basically staying at home now as much as I physically can.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 15:23

@Random18 did they really need to?
What actual action has been taken other than constantly reiterating wash your hands? That's literally it.
I don't think we needed to be named but we are doing precisely jack to contain this at all.

It’s normal for cheaper income protection to specify specific illnesses, I’ve not seen it in life insurance.

Freezingold · 12/03/2020 15:24

@Sunshinegirl82 thanks for that link with Boris Johnson and deputy CMO. I have to say I’m quite angry now! I think I’m going to have to write some stern letters!

So they have a fantastic model showing when the right time is and that big gatherings are okay. Tell that to South Korea and the religious sect that had a huge gathering and sparked off their spike!

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 15:25

@Helenj1977 My life policy covers us if we die from CV19. We're with Aviva.

NewYearNewTwatName · 12/03/2020 15:27

CoronaCon Well it could well be a death sentence for me. But you keep up with the fluffy bunnies though 👍

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 15:28

I like this comment on the reddit thread -

"I also think we're really unlucky to have a government currently that is full of wack job sociopath types who believe in social darwinism and dodgy unproven behavioural science stuff, which has only been proven to work on nudging very targeted personality profiles through social media to vote a certain way, but really has not at all been tested on how to respond to a pandemic. But they are very narcissistic people and think they're cleverer than they actually are. They also aren't plagued by having a conscience or worrying about the fact people will suffer or die, so to them (i.e. people like Cummings) it's just an interesting opportunity to experiment and if people die well that's just another opportunity to smash some system or institution or another and build it back up as they see fit.

I think they are just way in over their heads but they don't even realise it. They are very simple minded people, who can have clever ideas in narrow domains that might work by fluke once or twice and so think they understand a whole scientific field from reading one or two popular science books about it for the layman, but are completely dense when it comes to any depth of understanding of the complexity of all these things and things like unintended consequences."
