My god! Look at the markets!!!

With friends like trump, who needs enemies.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 13:59

@karentookthekids and @Oakmaiden

I think you're right!

Oakmaiden · 12/03/2020 14:00

If you don't want to that's fine but I don't think it's then appropriate to criticise.

But that is the joy of not being in public office. I get to criticise and complain, but don't have to come up with a better plan.

Health expert brands UK’s coronavirus response ‘pathetic’

Ministers ‘behaving like 19th-century colonialists playing a five-day game of cricket’, says Prof John Ashton

I can’t keep up with these threads anymore. I’m going for a nap, will someone wake me up when its all over?

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 14:01

@defthand I posted about that study this morning in response to people claiming the 7 day isolation if you show signs of illness makes sense. They were arguing you are only infectious when you are actually ill. That has shown to be untrue. It is also at odds with every virus I know about.

We will keep having daily briefings that essentially say nothing. Once enough people have got sick that events and some services are no longer viable, then they will close. Schools will not close at all but when enough teachers are off ill, we will be told we can keep kids home if we want to without a fear of fines.
The purpose of the daily briefings will be to make it look as if the government is doing something, and to send out clear media messages that they know what they are doing. I think they do know what they are doing. They are prioritising the economy first. And people dying is a side effect they are prepared to tolerate.

Durham Uni moving to online learning only from Monday, on their website

lemonjumper · 12/03/2020 14:02

Scottish cases are at 60 now (36 yesterday): www.gov.scot/coronavirus-covid-19/

MurrayTheMonk · 12/03/2020 14:02

Skyejuly-I manage a few care services. That's the only advice the Local authority and upper management are giving too. No idea what to do if lots of the staff go off sick at once.
I just asked my manager if there was any kind of plan and he said 'hope it doesn't happen'

Reastie · 12/03/2020 14:02

The rest of the world making speedy closures and we’re still dithering about hand washing with BJ saying we have better science and don’t need the measures yet, they won’t work. So our science is better than the rest of the world?! I’m really surprised how laid back people out there are about it that I’ve talked to this week.

Every time there has been an announcement I’ve felt sure there will be more than hand washing and it never is. Most I imagine we’ll see is stay at home if you have cold symptoms and work from home is possible to do so.

I don’t get why they seem to think British public so contrary to the rest of the world that they won’t follow advice. We’re not any less likely than other countries surely,

tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 14:04

@BarbedBloom I'm in exactly the same position. I can wfh but DP's employer won't allow it unless it's government policy. His job can be done from home so it's frustrating. We too have a small home with only one bathroom. He's washing hands and changing clothes when he gets in but I don't think I'll avoid it if he catches it. They definitely need to update the advice on self isolation and/or social distancing to include household members.

@Sunshinegirl82 I trust the experts at the World Health Organisation more than BJ. Unless, us their magic in the UK water that makes us special and less at risk than the rest of the world?

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 14:04

The British are more likely to follow advice than the Italians.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 14:05

Say what?

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 14:05

@tryingtoprep We are British. That somehow makes us magically immune

JemimaPuddleCat · 12/03/2020 14:05

Responses suggest it's only Scotland who cares about Scotland Hmm

Nearly doubled in 24 hours.

KarenTookTheKids · 12/03/2020 14:06

Trying, do you honestly think BJ is making decisions without guidance and advice from experts?

I am not saying they are right btw, just acknowledging that we don't know they are wrong.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 14:08

BJ is making decisions based on advice from expert economists. He is ignoring WHO.

People will die because of this.

tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 14:08

Of course @alloutoffucks The UK is the new Lourdes. Magical healing powers. Pilgrims will flock here!

nonicknameseemsavailable · 12/03/2020 14:08

I am getting very confused with the numbers. Scotland have a massive jump there in 24hrs. Are England numbers out yet? I was just reading stuff saying it had only gone up 4 since yesterday which surely can't be remotely accurate

Oakmaiden · 12/03/2020 14:09

@JemimaPuddleCat sturgeon did say they would shoot up, didn't she?

When I posted that wales had jumped from 6 to 15 there was no reaction either. I dunno. I guess the thread just moves so fast.

Juancornetto · 12/03/2020 14:09

@BarbedBloom it must be such a worry for you. I'm not sure if this information is helpful at all?

www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/protect/index.html

I'm someone with a healthy immune system and have always been quite relaxed about cleaning - I'm a big fan of the theory that if you're healthy it's not good being in too sterile an environment. But I'm starting a much stricter regime while this is all going on and will be following the advice given in the link

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 14:10

Anyway, moving swiftly past the lazy stereotyping, someone upthread asked about Italy's daily figures.
opendatadpc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/dae18c330e8e4093bb090ab0aa2b4892
If you scroll right, you get various graphs, projections daily figures.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 14:10

I'm am just able to accept my own limitations. I don't know who is right because I am not a world class consultant epidemiologist.

People whose entire careers have been spent dealing with these issues have told us how they think is the best way to proceed. Yes, there may be some variation in opinion and we may not know whose approach turns out to be the most effective for some time. I'm happy to trust the CMO and CSO. You may not be which is fine.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 12/03/2020 14:10

Redlentil, rather than being 'alarmed', perhaps you can understand that we don't all feel the same way as you? And that is ok. We don't all have to agree, even if you personally find that 'alarming'.

What I understand @KarenTookTheKids is that some people here are better informed than others.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 14:11

Amy update in the figures for England yet?
