I also feel that if the government continue with their, ‘everything is fine...there has never been a better time to visit Britain’, everyone will just carry on as normal visiting friends and family all over the globe over Easter and April will be total carnage!

If warnings are put in place beforehand, people’s Easter holidays would probably look quite different.

But I expect they will continue with their tried and tested policy of ‘dither, delay and dick about’ anyway.

MrsBeeluga · 11/03/2020 20:48

@MmeAlice hej 👋

Dh was supposed to go skiing in Italy, we persuaded him to cancel, that weekend it all exploded.

We have been self isolating the past couple of weeks, so are prepared as best we can.

I think the lock down is long overdue, should have been last week. Ds is a physicist, they have been calculating mathematical scenarios like mad for the past weeks. Not looking good the 'skyggetal' is the scary part here.

What is you experience and take on this?

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 20:48

About the 'government' posters- apparently some of the "Brexit' posters seem to have moved into protest mode on Coronavirus, hence the volume of posts about the gov etc.

i even saw one saying it will kill off the tory demographic which would be a good thing, somewhere. Nice.

Skybluepink123 · 11/03/2020 20:49

Does anyone know if the pneumonia vaccine would help vulnerable people?

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:49

@EricaNernie Please can you provide a source that shows 99% of people will recover. That would be massively reassuring, as there is nowhere I have seen a predicted death rate as low as 1%.

I don't have a default position of bashing the government, but Matt Hancock this evening is being especially vague and not reassuring.

But the government have fucked the NHS, and it will struggle to cope if this gets out of control in the UK. If we end up in an Italy situation, people will die because of decisions this government has made. And we are doing nothing to stop us from ending up in a situation like Italy.

We are not there yet, and there is still time, but we need to act decisively and quickly which is not what is happening.

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 20:49

Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock really arent driving this at all are they

Travel does need to stop though as much as possible between us and mainland Europe that is one big advantage we have over others are island status

FecktheBoss · 11/03/2020 20:50

I do worry about going into lockdown type of situations were abuse is within a household. We are going to have so many adults / kids vulnerable at home and not able to access the services that they need.

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:50

@EricaNernie Because we are listening to WHO, the actual experts.

We are not idiots. We can hear and read what WHO are advising, what other countries are doing and then what our country is doing.

I think as well as some others here that Boris is just going to let the virus ravage through the country and to hell with the deaths. We will be told those deaths were unavoidable.
But we will be able to compare death rates in the UK with similar countries.

OhMargo · 11/03/2020 20:50

Economy v the People now.

Sorry, I am not a hard leftie or commie, but honestly why the reticence about protecting the humann citizens of UK?

Yup, the economy stupid. And to think that during the Foot and Mouth everything came to a standstill for weeks, AND there was compensation given for the destruction of animals.

But we are mere humans in a global economy now.

mrshoho · 11/03/2020 20:51

This feels to me that we are now part of a massive experiment with each nation choosing how they are going to tackle this new virus. When it finally ends whether through herd immunisation or vaccination, the scientists will crunch all the numbers and see which method was the most successful and which were catastrophic. 😫

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:51

@Skybluepink123 Pneumonia vaccines are unfortunately of only limited help- they protect against bacterial, not viral pneumonia. They could help stop secondary infections, but would not help with the coronavirus itself.

However, getting one certainly wouldn't cause any harm.

nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:51

I've heard that 80% is the figure needed to provide herd immunity, but the people quoting this seemed to have a slightly inflated R0, imho. Before I am accused of scaremongering, Angela Merkel is quoting up to 70% catching the virus, so 80% doesn't sound off by a large margin of error.

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:53

@Skybluepink123 The advice I have seen is make sure you are up to date with vaccinations. Some people do get given the pneumonia vaccination. If you are eligible, yes get it.

nottoday3000 · 11/03/2020 20:53

@Skybluepink123 I thought this last week , all asthma sufferers etc (me included ) have a pneumonia jab

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 11/03/2020 20:53

Italian PM has ordered all non essential shops /businesses closed from now on. Food shops and pharmacies to remain open only.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 20:53

@skybluepink123
The pneumonia is viral and the vaccine is for bacterial.
Some people do get a bacterial secondary infection so the vaccine is not a bad idea for vulnerable people such as the elderly.

OP posts:
Bumblesbumbles · 11/03/2020 20:53

@Skybluepink123 - no, the S. pneumoniae vaccine is for a specific bacteria so is of no use here

Skybluepink123 · 11/03/2020 20:53

Thanks Sansa. I wonder if my gp would provide it for my dcs who all have underlying health problems?

EricaNernie · 11/03/2020 20:54

99 % recovery from deputy Public health

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/03/2020 20:54

But surely you need to isolate the most vulnerable in society now? Im not convinced by the herd immunity theory anyway, but we're going to kill a lot of the most vulnerable and doctors before we hit 80% infection rate.

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:54

I have read 60-80% will get it if there are not decisive actions to prevent its spread.

Branster · 11/03/2020 20:55

SansaSark, possibly, but the French prefer skiing in their own country, not Italy.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:55

@Skybluepink123 It's certainly worth asking.

Without wishing to scaremonger, if we are in a situation like Italy, where ICU care may have to be rationed, getting bacterial pneumonia could be very serious as well, so worth getting all the protection you can.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 20:55

PM Conte in live press conference:

  • All shops shut down except pharmacies and supermarket nationwide
  • Further sacrifices ahead for Italy

Sorry, I’ve just seen the other posts from bumble and warren. It’s so frustrating and terrifying to know there’s very little, as a mother, that I can do to protect my children.
