Why are some posters insisting that the tories are doing this to protect the rich? Really? Closing schools and shutting things down will affect the poorest of the country. They have acknowledged that. I wish people would actually think about what they are saying and not just Tory bash constantly. It’s pathetic

fedup21 · 11/03/2020 20:41

Has much more been said about the plan to bring retired NHS staff back as volunteers?

Won’t they be a) reluctant to come out of retirement to help in a pandemic of scary proportions, especially if they are over 55 and most as risk of dying from it and b) not fancy working flat out for no money?

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:41

Did anyone see the footage on the news of people using hand sanitisers at Cheltenham? It was absolutely useless and will have done nothing to clean their hands.

TheElementsOfMedical · 11/03/2020 20:41

Government "advice" to "call 111" Hmm

But unless our rate of spread is much slower than any other country similar to us, then in a couple of months then enough of the population would have been infected to achieve herd immunity. I can't for a moment think they are actually going to sit on their heels and let this happen.

Boris has already commented that there is a school of thought in support of just letting it burn through and getting it over with (or words to that effect).

I'm not convinced that isn't what they're doing. Maybe they're envisioning the UK coming through quickly lean and mean (albeit with a population cleansed of various vulnerable people) and then doing well afterwards? I can imagine some politicians would pride themselves on seeing that as a shrewd and necessary decision.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist - I don't think it would be a conspiracy, just a policy, if not one I'd agree with (or that the WHO agrees with, but they clearly think some people are thinking of doing it or they wouldn't have made that comment about it not being the moral thing to do).

Exochord · 11/03/2020 20:42

DH’s work team has been split in half today. Each half isolated in a separate office and they aren’t allowed to have any contact with the other half in or out of work hours. The idea is that if one person catches coronavirus, their half of the team will have to go into self isolation, but the other half of the team won’t have been exposed so can continue to work.

Kuponut · 11/03/2020 20:42

Nah I'll carry on against the Tories thank you. If labour were fucking things up like this I would bash them too - I'm non discriminatory like that.

nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:42

Why do we have to send our children to grandparents? What is wrong with all the 14-21 year olds that are going to be sent home? Why can't they help out?

@Charlesthekingcavalier I said that. Because otherwise they would have stopped Cheltenham. There are lots of things they could do to slow spread that will affect well off people's livelihood.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 20:43

alloutoffucks I know I’ve been posting with a sense of urgency over wfh but as time has passed I’ve seen many say their companies are taking action and saying wfh. It seems to be spreading anyway which is good.

I wouldn’t mind the extra guidance and reinforcement from government but I’d be interested to see how many messages stick and which one is most important and who will do it anyway even if they don’t say it. Ie wash your hands (needed) wfh (companies will self-initiate).

More and more who can wfh will.

OhMargo · 11/03/2020 20:43

The trends are out there. Decisive measures are needed now.

It would reassure many I think.

Dithering won't cut it at all anymore. But hey Cheltenham has to take place first, then the hammer will come down. Watch this space.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:43

Yes, of course, because I expect this crisis to last for less than a year. I have been absolutely clear that the allocations will increase in real terms and therefore everybody can plan on that basis and we will get the details out as soon as we can. Quote from Matt Hancock reported in the guardian here: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/11/coronavirus-update-live-news-uk-health-minister-italy-lockdown-australia-us-china-stock-markets-outbreak-latest-updates

What is he basing that "less than a year" on? I am about 90% confident he has nothing to back that up. A vaccine won't be ready and properly rolled out by then. Is that just the stage where he expects everyone to have either had the virus and got better or to have died?

I really feel like he is pulling numbers out of his arse at the moment.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 20:43

@FacingtheAbess

Was that really an announcement? Or are you paraphrasing and putting your won spin on it.

I can't tell the difference between reality and satire these days.

EricaNernie · 11/03/2020 20:43

but 99% of people will recover
i too am disappointed in this government bashing thread.
you all know so better, and you wont listen.

BloomedAgain · 11/03/2020 20:43

@Nearlyalmost50 exactly this. Other states bringing in different measures also have behavioural science teams and came to different conclusions.

Nearlyalmost50 · 11/03/2020 20:44

There was an article on here by a scientist explaining why school closures do stop transmission because even if children are not vectors, schools bring a lot of adults together, so around drop offs and pick ups and the staff will also be mixing a lot. Anyway, once a lot of school staff start getting sick, and some others take time off to look after their own sick families, there will be massive issues with keeping schools fully open- which is why I suggested partial closure or at least the suspension of fines/attendance targets as a starting point.

By the way, MH did seem to hint that attendance targets would be suspended as not important for future Ofsteds during this period, but he didn't actually say that or the impact on parents on what they could do, it's all vague 'carry on' messages which doesn't help people make decisions.

confusedandtired99 · 11/03/2020 20:44

@FacingtheAbess when did Chris Whitty say that?

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 20:44

Um because they are probably preparing for GCSEs / A levels?

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 20:45

@OhMargo I agree with you about Cheltenham- I think we will see a change in advice re large gatherings as soon as it's over.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 20:45

@Bearbehind

Actually, today's positive test percentage was nearly 7%.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 20:45

Chinese men are often heavy smokers, maybe that did it to his lungs also (x rays) Why share that, pneumonia causes lung scarring also

alloutoffucks · 11/03/2020 20:46

@MarshaBradyo The decent companies are now saying wfh. But lots of people still think this is all being exaggerated and some of those people will be managers.
Government official advice could still be wfh if you can.
Instead the Government is basically leaving it up to people to decide what they do. And the Government are doing nothing.

Mordred · 11/03/2020 20:46

Link sent from a friend in Milan again for those who didn't see it at the end of the last thread:

files.catbox.moe/3ns6c1.mp4?fbclid=IwAR1IK1Zg1leGQpEOi2xXTYdB3t50w2BsOD3ifCOzokW22YPUiBn2t7i847Y

Can we just STOP this very British 'Keep Calm and Carry On' crap and start asking serious questions of our soi-dissant government?

Another update from an Italian friend in Milan: "It's like a warzone'.

nellodee · 11/03/2020 20:47

1% of 80% of the UK population is over 500,000. For contrast, the total deaths (military and civilian) in the UK in WW2 was around 450,000.

That is JUST 1% for you.
