Even if we do move to the "delay phase", I don't see it really making any actual difference if the government don't do things like banning large gatherings.

Saying people should stay home even with minor symptoms is all good in theory, but realistically, how many people are actually going to be able to do this and not face pressure from their work etc to come in?

Janemarpling · 12/03/2020 06:45

Guy on sky news from Exeter uni said he was reviewing closing schools theory last night but he wasn't sure. ( paraphrased)He then went onto say his advise to the over 60s was to not get it and avoid it by keeping a low profile.
We need to lower the peak.

Janemarpling · 12/03/2020 06:48

The UK's strategy on responding to the virus has three phases: Containment, delay, mitigation and - running alongside these - research.
Delay is where "social distancing" measures will be considered - which could include restrictions on public gatherings above a certain number of people, although this is not thought likely at this stage.

It will be more wash your hands.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 06:51

His advice to the over 60s was not to get it?

How are they supposed to do that realistically? Most people in their 60s still work, many have caring responsibilities, many older people have very full and active lives.

How do you "just not get it"?

Babyfairy0923 · 12/03/2020 06:53

Now Trump has put in his rules everyone is going to fly to the USA via London, they need to put rules into place TODAY!!!

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 06:54

Given the advanced behavioural ‘nudge’ expertise they are employing- can’t they see we have had enough of blooming ‘‘wash your hands’

Horehound · 12/03/2020 06:56

Dr margaret Harris,WHO saying travel bans do not work.
Social distancing - you have to look at who the vulnerable groups are and how to protect them. Not simply about limiting people coming in its more about washing hands and environmental hygiene...it's so basic and so effective that's why they keep going in about it.
Delay idea is slowing spread of virus. Contain is stopping it.
Can e slow it as much as possible. Model is Singapore. Fastidious about hygiene, checking people's temperatures. Lots to learn from other countries

Horehound · 12/03/2020 06:56

That was all Dr Margaret Harris in BBC news just now.

DonkeyKong2019 · 12/03/2020 06:58

Why did trump allow the UK?

Horehound · 12/03/2020 06:58

@bumblesbymbkes you've said a few times you've had enough of "wash your hands" except that's the thing the WHO says is most effective and that's why they keep going on about it.

So maybe just take some stock in that it is good advice and get over it!

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2020 06:58

Well, this has taken as mother turn overnight hasn't it?

Buckle up folks, it's going to be a bumpy day.

TokyoSushi · 12/03/2020 06:58

*another!!!! 🙄

Wehttam · 12/03/2020 06:59

I can’t see how people will be able to fly to the US via London? Surely they would check their passports, we all know how hard US immigration is even at the best of times. It will be a big fat No to anyone trying to circumvent this ban.

Bogoffrain · 12/03/2020 06:59

It’s really worries me that you can catch it twice😩 I stupidly thought it was like chicken pox and a one off in most cases.

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 07:00

Was your hands is great so long as that’s not it! I’m a big advocate so long as that not our only option!

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 07:00

Typos!! Sorry!

DonkeyKong2019 · 12/03/2020 07:00

Yes I can't see the USA falling for that trick. I do know a few people flying from UK to Florida with mainland Europe stop overs so will be interesting to see if they can go

Hellsbells123098 · 12/03/2020 07:01

What are we thinking will happen today then?

School closures planned straight away or maybe tagging onto Easter? For me this has to be announced so people can try and plan

Events behind closed doors? That has to happen

Travel bans?

Horehound · 12/03/2020 07:03

Well, this has taken as mother turn overnight hasn't it

Not really, no...

@Bumblesbumbles well that's the best and main thing for now. Let's just wait and see what new advice is in the next week but I expect it will be much the same as "wash your hands" unless you are elderly or immunosupressed

Horehound · 12/03/2020 07:04

@Hellsbells123098 no. There won't be school closures yet. Yes maybe large events indoors cancelled. No point in travel bans as the WHO says they don't work although obviously a country can decide to do them if they want..

Wehttam · 12/03/2020 07:04

Agree bumbles Lots of very laid back attitudes out in the real world that will no doubt exasperate this calamity further.

DP is a teacher and the head is a non believer, no letters sent to parents, no hand sanitizer provisions, nothing, and tonight is parents evening. Beggars belief, even more so the fact that parents haven’t challenged this either. It’s a deprived area school but still, you would expect at least one to have questions about their child’s welfare.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 07:05

@shanghaidiva

Yes, obviously people can choose to exercise social distancing whenever they want.

However, when it comes to the government giving general advice to all older people and vulnerable groups that they should isolate themselves (which the CMO suggested earlier on in this situation was likely) that guidance has to be practical and well timed.

I would be surprised if there is any significant changes today. The CMO has already very clearly set out that the initial stage of the "delay" phase is pretty much identical to the "contain" phase. They will continue to contact trace and isolate where appropriate.

Personally I will be quite annoyed if the Government start doing things just to be seen to be doing things. They have told us they have an evidence based plan and I hope they follow it through.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 07:05

I think the UK is excluded from the ban as it's not a schengen area country - there is a tiny bit of logic to that.

It will be interesting to see what happens to people who try to return via the UK or Canada.

At this stage I think a mass travel ban in the US is pointless - the number of know cases there really is just the tip of the iceberg and there is clearly already community transmission.

Handwashing is so important, but we do need more than that. Handwashing alone will not stop the spread.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 12/03/2020 07:06

Morning.

Alib838 · 12/03/2020 07:06

It took nearly 4 weeks of badgering from me for my DD school to get the children to wash their hands before lunch and 2 weeks to fill up soap dispensers. Nothing worked until I got the Local Authority involved (telephoned) and the Governors emailed out of pure frustration. After all that the Head said it only takes 2-3 minutes to organise before lunch after all that obstinacy!! My child has an immune related disorder and suffers when she gets a mild cold. There are children at the school receiving chemo. It angers me that schools are not doing their bit and show disregard for chilren's wellbeing. My Head lied and said they'd never had an empty soap dispenser (I know this is untrue as I have been aware that for the last 2-3 years my children reported it was always empty). The Head is currently telling parents in emails that they regularly tell children in assemblies to wash their hands and how to do it. My daughter says they have done it once only (the day after the Local Authority lady phoned the school). Ask the children what happens in your school. I have no confidence in the Head of my school. It's negligent on the school's part to do nothing. The Dept of Education's response is that it is down to the Head Teachers to interpret the guidelines. I would have hoped they would have sent a directive to all Head Teachers insisting on hand washing. Perhaps the heard immunity theory is a strong possibility then.
