Schools will need to close soon anyway Armaria they can wash hands and easily

still get sick. Attendance doesn't matter
now.

MurrayTheMonk · 12/03/2020 04:36

My DD's school has so far done absolutely nothing. Not even extra hand gel anywhere. Kids aren't even being reminded to wash their hands. I'm a bit askance at that.

No one in real life near me is taking this seriously at all. Not work, not school, not DP who keeps arguing that's it's just flu and who at the moment wouldn't survive self isolation with me!

The messaging from government on this is woeful. This isn't bloody Dunkirk and we won't get through it by coming together with the spirit of the blitz or whatever bullshit notions they seem to be peddling...

I really hope that we get some sense after today's cobra meeting.

That Cheltenham picture yesterday was mind boggling. Why do we believe we're invincible? I just don't get it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/03/2020 04:40

I wonder if it makes a difference if there's been local cases; there's been cases very close to me and a few huge offices have closed for cleaning etc. Consequently schools are taking it more seriously. We also have children who react badly to infections eg epilepsy etc.

Donenow1 · 12/03/2020 05:11

I can't say too much for obvious reasons but I work in a surgery. If anyone rings with respiratory troubles they HAVE to be directed to NHS 111 and cannot come to the surgery. We are getting complaints that people are having to wait an hour and a half to get through. I'm not surprised.

MurrayTheMonk · 12/03/2020 05:30

I think it might. There has been nothing reported near my parents really apart from one case a week ago (though to be fair there might have been but they aren't tech savvy and so wouldn't know either way). Thus I can kind of see why they aren't reacting in any way. My dad is 90 and has COPD. They went to the pub yesterday for lunch and sat with lots of other OAP's, next to, (in my dads words), 'one old girl that was coughing so much her teeth nearly fell out'. I have told them they are being incredibly risky but they won't have it perhaps because they feel it's not in their area yet.

However I'm in Herts/Essex where there have been quite a lot of cases, which is why I don't understand the schools total non acknowledgement of it at all.

magicrainbowbeans · 12/03/2020 05:33

Australians are being told that only people who came into close contact with Tom Hanks and for 15 minutes or more are at any risk Hmm

Sucksfake1 · 12/03/2020 05:41

Can folk stop with the "just" one percent or "so many thousand" bollocks.

If your not in the not at risk group bully for you neither am I as it happens. My toddler is his lungs are shite he is 2 and he will most certainly die.

My bio dad is high in a certain military

Sucksfake1 · 12/03/2020 05:49

Bollocks pressed to soon.

My bio dad is high in a certain military group supposed to be in France as we speak his travels been called off and whatever MH is saying thinks the schools will be shut soon.

Had parents evening last night they will send DD7's work electronically if we go on lockdown.

It's in our borough and I'm talking one isolated case in the Durham dales can't get much more rural then us.

middleager · 12/03/2020 06:00

The situation in Trinity is scary.
Children do get this. What happens when it is a child with underlying health issues.

Dreading work today as we are having a meeting. Boss most probably went to that massive Liverpool match.
Everybody on the team will be dismissive again. Only one other has kids too to look after.

My huaband still looks at me in a bemused way when I ask him to wash his hands when he gets in.

When I suggested we go through some basics with the kids (using washing machine, bank details, oven etc) he laughed, shook his head, like I was suggesting we prepare them for space exploration.

Aria20 · 12/03/2020 06:06

Awaiting big announcement today as another cobra meeting this morning! We're going to have to close the schools as we've got to be seen to be doing more!

middleager · 12/03/2020 06:11

But what big announcements have they actually ever made on the back of one of those meetings?

Every day we sit in hope that something sensible will be announced. Media speculates, but all that is said is wash your hands, call 111, follow the Science.

I'm looking at what they do, not say.

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 06:14

I notice a change in the tone of the media today- much more an emphasis that interventions will happen now rather than soon. Maybe we will see a change today?! Schools closing would be the very last thing though I’m guessing

woodencoffeetable · 12/03/2020 06:17

wrt schools - get on to the pta and school secretariat.
soap and towels are absolutely basic and schools should be ashamed if they don't provide it.

am Shock at trump's travel ban announcement. didn't expect that.

NewYearNewTwatName · 12/03/2020 06:18

there won't be a big announcement. MH said they and the opposition are having a meeting next week to talk about what will go in a bill, and what measures to take.

it's like dodgy builders forever saying the job will be done in 2 weeks.

Wehttam · 12/03/2020 06:26

What the, well today is going to be interesting that’s for sure...

Stay calm everyone, one step at a time.

Breathe.

We’re going to get through this.

🙅🏻‍♀️

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 06:26

@NewYearNewTwatName- you’re probably right. Don’t thing I can cope with more non-action. Please, no more ‘wash your hands’

Coronavirus: UK expected to move to 'delay' phase www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51845861

Loppy10 · 12/03/2020 06:29

Uganda designates the UK as a high risk, enforced mandatory spraying of disinfectant of all passengers on arrival and enforced 14 day quarantine

Tigger83 · 12/03/2020 06:29

Due to have sons 2nd birthday party next weekend, 25 toddlers in a small village hall.... do I cancel?!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/03/2020 06:35

I sat on a bus yesterday. It was empty when I got on so I sat downstairs but right at the back. I could not believe that everyone who subsequently got on then clustered together downstairs, including two Italian ladies (the elder of whom had a hacking cough....). No-one seemed to be even thinking about social distancing. GRRRRR.

SansaSnark · 12/03/2020 06:39

Shutting the school in Carlisle seems like the only sensible course of action - I can't see the justification for keeping it open.

I agree that we won't see any major new announcements today. It may be that when cross party talks have been held we will see stronger measures as the government will be able to share the blame with others.

Nothing trump does surprises me, though. He's completely irrational.

Loppy10 · 12/03/2020 06:41

I know public schoolboy types, I went to Uni with a lot of them. They GENUINELY BELIEVE they are better than the rest of us. They GENUINELY BELIEVE seemingly that the majority of us are too stupid / crap to follow public health messages

Agree 100%. The CMO, deputy CMO, BoJo and most of his political advisers including Dominic Cummings are all public school boys/girls. They've got the classic misplaced sense of self confidence and colonial era attitude that somehow convinces them that they know best and that international world leading experts in the field are wrong. The plebs in the general population should just pipe down and listen to the people in charge
