So, what does ‘Delay’ actually look like? How different from contain?

FranticBanana · 11/03/2020 23:50

In the primary school where I work we have been asked to prepare plans for setting work online but only as one of a number of scenarios. The one that seems have the most emphasis for the moment is how we could keep the school running with a tiny fraction of our normal staff if a lot of people were too ill to work. Large numbers of children shoehorned in with one teacher seems to be the expectation, and if we are short of cleaning staff then everyone still standing will be fitting that job in around what would basically have to be a babysitting service. Not sure how we’d be able to provide dinners with a skeleton staff either - Maccy D run for 400 kids maybe?😂

"The govt leak things to the press. They do it deliberately."

Yep, they float ideas to find out the reaction
Will the public want it / accept it / refuse it

Then the govt makes the decision

If some dire public health predictions have made them wobble and start to lose their nerve,
then they want to know how the public would react to much stronger measures, or even to a U-turn

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2020 23:52

Steve Hawkes @steve_hawkes
Heard some talk tonight that MPs considering a skeleton Parliament where just 100 MPs would sit - based on current party splits - to show democracy still functioning. We are in near unprecedented times

AuldAlliance · 11/03/2020 23:53

The list of universities listed way upthread that have closed schools and universities doesn't include several that have closed one or both (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Greece...).

France is waiting for various things like municipal elections on Sun before doing much, but announcements will perhaps be made in an address by ManuMacron tomorrow...

Lots of the debates I've seen 100 would have been a good turnout...

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 23:56

Aren't there some children without sufficiently reliable internet access or phone / tablet to study at home
What would be the plan for them, or do they just miss out on education ?

I suppose those relying on free school meals could receive deliveries

  • but is there the will & budget for that - maybe they miss out on food too ?
BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 23:58

A U-turn now might look like panicked realisation that ministers are not immune from the virus, after Dorries getting it

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2020 23:58

BBC Newsnight @bbcnewsnight
“We’ve got a complacent attitude… & we’ve wasted a month. If this now spreads the way it looks as though it’s likely to spread, there will not be enough hospital beds & people will have to be nursed at home”

@MangePasTesOnglesVilain not hysterical at all. UK have always/do think we are better than the rest of the world

Random18 · 12/03/2020 00:02

My kids school had a higher than average Pupil Premium.

The kids do.amazing there - when they are in school.

It's a big issue and a forum like Mumsnet.probably doesn't give them enough consideration

Many parents are poor. They can't properly feed their kids never mind pay for Wifi.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 12/03/2020 00:03

Oh ignor me it is Corona related! I read the wrong twitter thread as I have 5 open!

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 00:05

The mother I'm trying to avoid has a house she won't clear out. She's a hoarder from what I can tell. She won't let anyone in the house.

It has two bedrooms but only one is use able and even then her daughter has to climb over things to get to her bed.

She spent all the Christmas holidays pretty much turning up on my doorstep as she tries to spend as little time in the house as possible. She can't cope with her daughter during the holidays. Pretty sure it's connected to the house.

I'm not sure what she'd do if there was a lockdown.

Even then she's still in a better place than a lot of families who are in temporary accommodation.

Coronavirus shows up these type of issues pretty starkly.

Lynamic · 12/03/2020 00:06

Good article Oakmaiden yeah been feeling for few days maybe about to get locked in soon

SubjectMatterExpert · 12/03/2020 00:06

@Random18, I reckon support could be put in place for kids on pupil premium, with planning. Food deliveries and checks? Keep school canteens and libraries open?

Research finds huge impact of interventions on spread of Covid-19

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/11/research-finds-huge-impact-of-interventions-on-spread-of-covid-19

if the interventions could have been brought in a week earlier, 66% fewer people would have been infected, the analysis found.
The same measures brought in three weeks earlier could have reduced cases by 95%.
.....
“Of the three types of intervention we looked at, the early detection and isolation of cases likely had the strongest impact
.....
The other two types of interventions, social distancing and travel restrictions, I think do need to be looked at seriously in the coming days.”

Exochord · 12/03/2020 00:07

I’m puzzled as to why Italy locked down Milan etc at 20 cases, yet we’re at 460 and just doing hand washing?

I’m predicting a London lockdown this weekend and the rest of the country the following weekend. Based on the fact we are tracking approx two weeks behind Italy. I can’t decide when to self isolate - I don’t want to annoy people or make them think I’m flaky because I’ve stopped attending things while others are still saying it’s just the flu and no big deal.

SubjectMatterExpert · 12/03/2020 00:12

What is happening in countries with no NHS? Are insurance companies paying out for CV treatment?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/03/2020 00:13

Closing schools may lower the risk for some adults, especially the elderly

but it increases the risk of suffering - education, food, safety - for the poorest and most vulnerable kids & families.

As well as the effect on the NHS and other essential services of some parents not being able to go to work.

Ther are so many other measures the govt should be ramping up, that would be far less harmful

Random18 · 12/03/2020 00:13

Subject would they? I'm not convinced.

SubjectMatterExpert · 12/03/2020 00:14

@Exochord, I already told my boss, I’m not going in to work. I’m not waiting for government to make that decision! But I am lucky that I am able to do that, I know

Sunflower20 · 12/03/2020 00:15

So sick of the government giving absolutely fuck all useful advice to the public, which doesn't bother me nearly as much as the fact that they can't seem to drill it into some people that this should be taken seriously.
The number of people that I come across that are extremely blasé about the whole thing is shocking. I know someone who's got 3 European holidays booked in the next 2 months (fingers crossed they get cancelled). Don't fucking come near me please!

Exochord · 12/03/2020 00:16

Closing schools may lower the risk for some adults
I disagree. All those kids that were safely contained in schools would instead be out in the community, having contact with adults at shopping centres and cafes etc.

Random18 · 12/03/2020 00:16

Sorry I am getting political here.

But many of the high risk group are traditional Tory voters .

The lower risk are new Tory voters who would feel the impact of school closures the most.

Whilst I am against school closures I am fascinated to see which way this govt goes.
